C&Rsenal is a YouTube channel that researches historical firearms, shows how they work, and fires them. Currently they are going through every small arm of WWI, including the machine guns. For history geeks, it’s incredibly informative.

They are/were funded from two sources, ads run on YouTube and donations through Patreon. The other day YouTube announced they were being de-monetized, due to “harmful content”. The site did this as they were about to collect a windfall of advertising revenue. Apparently YouTube will pocket that money.

The host says if everyone who watches donated a dollar a month they’d be OK. I thought I’d put this out to spread the word.

So, before I jump in. I this an issue of making it a donation-funded rather than *advertiser* funded operation?

If I send a dollar, can I know for CERTAIN that it can not be co-opted by utoob?

That's my fear, that googletube then makes money for stuff financed by others. Maybe if they took it to Vimeo or another video streamer I could forward a few shekels, but not to enable greedtube.
 
Does YT still run ads on demonetized videos/channels?

YT won’t be able to touch Pateeon donations.

Also, every YTuber with gun content should resign to being demonetized either now or later.
 
I like the fact that they exist. Ophias is a bit dry and emotionless for my taste so I don’t watch a ton of their videos. Hard to be entertaining when you are being intentional and informative though so I understand why it’s not for me. They along with Forgotten Weapons are a great wealth of information boiled down to a few videos so that those of us with a technical interest but no need for extreme details can get the info quickly. My wife hears Ian and asks me what “squeaky” is playing with, she hears Ophias and just says to turn it down. I fear that FW will see the same fate as C&Rsenal, and I do firmly believe that it is a worthy cause to support, if for no other purpose to maintain an understanding of the weapons and the technological evolution of them along with political/cultural references that explain some of the quirkiness. I just wish they would get more excited. I will send them a few bucks in gratitude for their coverage of the Mauser 1910/1914/1934 family of pistols.
 
I know Patreon can’t steal their money the way YouTube did. But I guess they can stop serving them. That hasn’t happened — yet. I’d like to see them survive; I’m at $3.00 a month. If those who watch regularly just gave a buck, they’d be fully funded. But what got me to start this post is that I’m pissed off at YouTube. They probably saw the growing interest in the channel and planned the perfect time to pull the rug out.

Likely... and right after the holidays too. I saw this coming though when google took over YouTube because google is the most popular search engine and they promote their internal assets, and that always grows into a greedy monster.
 
YouTube had to conform to a New York lawsuit which was effective over the last few days to designate if a channel is kids safe or not. Every single content creator now has to select if the content is child safe or not. In the email I got they went out of their way to say it was not their choice.

I also think Patreon is the way to go.
 
WestKentucky is right when he says Othias can be pretty dry (though he admits to watching the video about his gun 3 times). I thought I’d post this example of the intro to Project Lightening. Several episodes where they describe and test all the Light Machine Guns of the Great War. It’s anything but dry:


That was February 14th last year. So you can binge watch.
 
Different strokes for different folks. I much prefer Othias and Mae's low key presentation over some hi-energy emotionally driven videos. Their dry sense of humor works for me and it's fun watching Mae shoot.

As many have said, we are in a culture war and if people presenting our side of the story are silenced we will have a harder time recruiting. I am a (low-level) Patreon supporter for C&R, Anvil (their related gunsmithing channel) and Forgotten Weapons. The vast majority of us will never notice a couple of bucks extra on the credit card bill.

I also just joined the VCDL and sent them a contribution, but that's a different topic.

With all of the free content on the internet it's easy to get spoiled. While the people who read groups like this are probably a small percentage of active gun owners, if all of us started kicking in a few dollars a month to good quality YouTube presenters - they will be around not only for us but also when people who may just be curious about guns are looking for more.

Same here. Little turns me off faster in an informational video than; Asinine action-movie themes/background music, dynamic/extreme/pandering lead-ins or general bad-assery on the parts of the presenters.

I can't help but keep thinking: "Keeping up with the Gundashians" or WWFoolery.

One of the reasons that hickock45 is a "go-to" for me.

Youtube is a vountary thing. People prefer it for starting up a channel because of the volume and ease of use. Obviously changes to posting rules, advertising, and monetization rates is detrimental to existing content providers but it is a private company's venue which they chose to use. They can always set up there own independent cites or use alternate platforms, however they won't simply because Youtube has the best platform right now for building viewership. You get a real good idea of how this works by simply looking at the number of subscribers for similar channels on competing platforms.
 
I disagree.
YouTube is playing stupid political games and is trying to ingratiate themselves with the Hollywood crowd.
They are promoting corporate sites while suppressing original content producers, especially those that have a higher viewership than the corporate and Hollywood types.
They are especially down on firearms, political analysis, self-sufficiency and criticism of things like global warming.
Most of these independent content creators are jumping to other platforms.
I don't blame them.
I expect YouTube to go the way of cable television.
 
I'll stick to my guns on this. Youtube is a hobby. It's not supposed to be your job. The very fact that people are being paid to post on youtube is nuts. I hear grade schoolers all the time say "When I grew up, I want to be a professional youtuber." It's ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong, I really like C&R and Forgotten Weapons, (I bought Ian's book.) But I'm not going to send my hard earned ammo money to someone else so they can buy ammo with it and shoot for free. I'll do my own shooting with my own money and not ask others for donations for me to do my hobby.
 
I can see questioning the wisdom of making your living on an internet service, especially when that service is hostile to your profession. But the fact is that people do get paid to provide content to YouTube, much as a someone gets paid to run this website — which is also a hobby.

As for donations, I like the research and I like watching the old guns run. And I watch regularly. I’m accustomed to paying for my entertainment. When I was a kid I hopped the fence to see football games, but nowadays I go in through the gate.

It seems to me that you have fundamentally misunderstood the entire point.
 
I, personally, think that YouTube, BitChute and all the rest of these platforms are the prototypes of the universities of the future.
Even now, a discerning viewer can get a solid base of information - possibly even knowledge - from the contents of these platforms.
I've certainly learned a great deal from Othais and May and I don't mind payin a bit for it.

I doubt it. Especially when it comes to the shooting sports. Bottom line is, youtube supporters pay their money to someone else to go and do their hobby for them, rather than they do their hobby for themselves.

As much as I enjoy some of these gun channels, why should I buy anyone's ammo? Shall I send you money so that you can go to the range for free, or worse, make a profit off me from going to the range? Why shouldn't I keep my money?
