Which semi-auto .22 LR??

Another SA-22 fan here. Mom is not a shooter by any stretch, firing a final zero check each season at the range with her Knight before deer season and most years 2 rounds for 2 tags.

Zero is the number of range rounds her Browning gets unless she takes my kids (who love shooting it) but seldom are the times she’s missed a head shot on a squirrel over 30 years of hunting them (all with the same rifle) including a limit 2 weeks ago at age 72.

That Browning swings like lightning and carries almost feather light while shooting straight and it functions well. Mom’s was purchased specifically because she’s a southpaw and the SA is bottom eject, but that may not be a consideration for everyone. They’re available in both graded walnut or a maple stock version and I believe one model in a French Gray finish.

I gave up on other designs and fell in line with the 10/22 years ago. You can make or remake it into just about anything -- you don't even need a single Ruger component in the thing.

I've a total of four 10/22s right now: the Plinker, the Folder, the Sniper and the Semi-Match rifle. Of these, none have Ruger barrels, and only one has a Ruger receiver (2 Brownell and one AMT.) Except for the barrel, my plinker is not too different from a TCR22 and might serve for your niche. Both the Folder and the Plinker weight around five pounds thanks to lightweight barrels -- the Folder's is bull profile, but has a fluted aluminum shroud over a stainless liner.

I looked for a Browning BAR on GunBroker and found one badly abused and neglected boat-paddle for over $700...seriously??

There must be at least a million and one upgrades available for a 10/22. What didn't you like about your 10/22?

Having to "upgrade" it with aftermarket stuff to make it usable.

Just purchase a CZ-512 and be done with it,,,
You will own one of the most accurate production rim-fires out of the box.

Reed's in Minnesota is selling Browning SA-22s for $599.99 shipped. They showed 16 of them; some with better wood than others, but all NIB. So, for $625 I could have one shipped and processed with my local FFL guy. Strong contender.

I haven't seen a mention of the AR22. Talk about fun!
If you look at them, make sure it is an actual AR15 lower, not one made for the .22LR like the Colt/Walther/GSG. and S&W.
Then get a dedicated .22LR upper.
Did I mention it's fun?

I kn k w you're going to laugh, but a modell 99 m1 Marlin is by far the funnest plinker I've shot. It literally cannot be fired fast enough

Winchester 63...

Kinda appalled no one has brought that one up yet.
I agree, and considered making a similar suggestion. The 63 is/was the Royalty of Winchester's .22 autos, and seldom seen for sale these days. Especially the even rarer original Winchester factory 63's with grooved receivers like this one.. DSC_0062.JPG DSC_0065.JPG DSC_0072.JPG

Agree.

I came across a CZ 512 American carbine online for about $280 – snapped it right up.

It’s been discontinued and must have been languishing in a warehouse somewhere as it has a 2017 date stamp.

It’s an ugly little so-and-so with its shoe polish black stock and 16 in. threaded barrel, but it’s 100 percent reliable and very accurate – averaging five-shot groups at under an inch.

It runs perfectly with standard velocity match/target ammo such as Wolf, Center-X, and RWS; the type of ammo that tends to not function well in semi-autos.
If you think that one is accurate, try one of the CZ bolt .22’s

I had a Win 63 and sold it to a friend who really wanted it. I had no use for a semi at the time, but now I really want one and I'm thrilled with the great suggestions. really like the Volquartsen. It's expensive but really impressive and of course offers unparalleled accuracy. This journey has also kindled my interest in Tikka Tx1 in 17HMR. Of course with both I'm around $2000, add two scopes and over $3000...yikes...but, what the hell. I'll let you know what I buy and thanks for all the suggestions. Tom

I've got:
Chinese browning knock off ATD 22lr
Marlin 49 (western auto 150)
Taurus 63 stainless
Marlin mod 60
Ruger 10/22
Cmmg 22lr insert
Marlin mod 99
Savage 62

Marlin 39 lever
Henry 001 lever
And a metric ton of bolt action 22lr

I've had good luck with all of em so far. Can make cans dance "out there" and have shot em all at steel at 200 yds.

I have a Winchester 74. It's probably 80 years old and was my dad's. I had to rebuild parts of it but it is still a pretty good shooter.
