The new grips may be walnut laminate or walnut colored, but the grain doesn't resemble any of Colt Python walnut grips of the past that I have.

Am I wrong or are they a different shape than the old ones? Wouldn't bother me, I think the old ones flared too much at the wrong end.

Thanks for the positive range report aside from the one dud round. Curious if it would have fired in another .357, just to rule out light strikes but if you tried 3 times I would attribute it to ammo as well.

The old grips are definitely different than the old Colt target grips. I thought about replacing them with a set of "old ones" but came to the conclusion they wouldn't look any more "right" on the "new" gun than a set of aftermarket ones from Thailand. Since the ones on it at worst look a little plain, I can live with them. The do feel good, and handle the recoil well.

I'm 99.9% sure it was a dud round. There was a good firm indentation on the primer even after the first hit. I tried it again because I thought maybe it was a light strike...when that didn't work I tried it S/A to just get rid of the round if possible. No go, so I just went back to shooting. It was a relief when the next round up fired though.

Someone on another forum commented that they had stopped using Fiocchi ammo for that reason. I don't shoot a lot of factory ammo at all, but grabbed a box this time because I wanted something a little hotter than my reloads the first time out. I've used Fiocchi before with no problems, and certainly don't consider one dud round to be a "problem." As a matter of fact, that's what's in my carry gun right now, now that I think of it.

Better to have a dud primer in a revolver than an auto pistol.

Cajun........you need to buy one of those lottery tickets , you also need to change your name to Lucky Cajun Bass , those new pythons are awesome looking , your making us all look pathetic, I'm happy for you brother but please save some for us ...

My first impression of the grips was that they were some sort of laminate but according to Colt's website they're walnut. For the King Cobra Target they have the grips listed as being wood and made by Altamont.

I realize the new target grips are a larger contour than older grips.

Were the last wood grips used on the original Python Walnut or Cocobolo?

I know Cocobolo can't be imported now (endangered) and any decent figured walnut (even Turkish) isn't cheap.

I'd be willing to bet a shiny nickel they're made by Altamont. I've been saying they're sort of plain, but by George, they're starting to grow on me. I think I like them now.

The factory stocks look identical to the ones listed on Altamont's site. I'd guess they're the OEM. They make a very good product if you like laminate.

Good luck with your new beauty. I am looking for the exact same one. I am just being patient until I can get one at retail. Last week there was one for sale near me, but they wanted $2,800!
That was a funny quote about your wife's walker brake!

That King Cobra is a really nice looking gun too. I've got one of the 38 Cobra's that quickly became my EDC. The best shooting snub gun I've ever handled.

Yea...I'm going to have to eat crow on that one. When I went to the range last, she wanted to shoot it. No problem. She fired off a few rounds at the target I was using, then said she wanted her own. No problem.

Well, then she cranked off 12 rounds, of 125 grain 357 ammo, from 21 feet, shooting double action. The first two rounds went low left. After that she apparently made a mental adjustment, and just started dropping them in.

When she finished, she handed the gun back to me, and said "Not bad for an old, fat, crippled woman I don't suppose." ;) I replied, "Well, now I can't show any of my own targets." :) Then she went back out to the lobby to talk to her friend who works there.

Now she wants one of her own. A good excuse to watch for a 4" er. :)

Oh...by the way. I went to the range this afternoon. I did an additional 85 rounds of 357 before my back started to hurt and I gave it up. No malfunctions of any kind. That's a total for me of about 230? 240 or so. Not a real torture test, but I've already shot this gun more than a lot of guns I've owned for years.

I need to load some more ammo this weekend.

As soon as I heard that Colt was going to reintroduce the Python, I had a fire sale of some guns that were just collecting dust so I'd be ready when I saw one.

Yesterday was the day. I walk into the shop, do the usual "Hi, how's everyone" and so on, then say, "I'm just looking for a Python."

We got one of the new ones. OH?

Out comes the blue box and inside is about the prettiest gun I've ever seen. The finish just gleams like a mirror. It's got a 6" barrel, I'd prefer a 4", but the 6 looks and feels good. I can make an exception.

Out of the box it's got a great trigger. I knew just how good it was when I handed it to my wife who wouldn't know a good trigger, from the brake grip on her walker, and her eyes just went wide...WOW!

The fit, the finish, the lockup were all spot on. OK...the grips are sort of mundane, but they feel good and aren't ugly. They fit without a seam at all. They almost look like one piece of wood where they join.

I haven't fired it of course, but I have dry fired it a couple-three hundred times. Everything works just as it should.

Did I mention that it came home with me? I guess I didn't need to.

Price was right on the MSRP $1499.99. Yea, I could have waited and maybe saved some money, but on the other hand, I might not live that long. I ain't getting any younger.
