The SDVE has a long track record being very reliable. At the moment, I think a Walther Creed at the same price would be my choice though.

Make sure you try the triggers on both.
One has a somewhat DA Revolver like trigger.
The other has no real defined break.
I know people who can't deal with either.

Of the list of sub-$300 pistols I listed earlier the Canik TP9 SF has the nicest trigger in my opinion. The Canik is NATO certified so should be reasonably reliable. They.are $280 at Academy. That doesn't mean it's the right pistol for you. That is different for everyone.

The only bad thing about the Canik is the lack of parts availability. Plus the complete disassembly is horrible when it comes to removing it's slide stop/disassembly lever .

The RUGER because I want to hit what I’m aiming at.
Although both are probably equally reliable.
I do own a SDVE, I do not own a SR9.
I do own an LC9 and it is twice as accurate as the SDVE in my hands.

The more I shoot the Canik with that sweet trigger the more I think it's the best Truck Gun.

Canik TP9SF 9mm One Series $250-300
Comes with one 18-Round Mag.
I would order a couple of OEM Mecgar 20-Round Mags.

Interesting. My EC9S has a much lighter shorter trigger but my SW9VE shoots better groups.

I owned a sigma biggest POS I've ever owned. Love all my Rugers. Could have been a lemon. Not going to test fate again.

Ruger has better QC going on for the price point. S&W 1.0 would be better than the SD9VE

Which pistol for an economy and trunk gun ? The type of gun you would toss in a hunting bag or fishing box or just for any outdoors type thing. And why do you pick them one you chose ?
I do not use trunk pistols since I carry my pistol CCW. If you life depends upon it I suggest you carry the best. If I want a cheap effective gun in the trunk I would chose a used pump shotgun in 12, 16, or 20 ga as being good to go. In my area such are generally much cheaper than would be either of the pistols you mentioned.
Tackle box is normally a smaller pistol. I guess a keltec 380-9x19 or small ruger for that maybe.

And that is exactly what the OP is asking! And look he even listed a Ruger in the choices! I would also like to recommend a Rock Island M200 in .38 spec with the first three being snake shot from CCI.:neener::what::evil::rofl:

I've owned a lot of Rugers. I still own a lot of S&Ws. Aside from my SRH 454 of which S&W does not have a comparable model, I'll take a Smith every time, revolver or auto.

Having said that, of the budget 9mm category, I happen to be a fan or the Remington RP9. Good ergos, good sights, 18+1 capacity, and my example has been 100% reliable with every ammo I've thrown at it, suppressed or not.

I have a Ruger Security 9 and while I don't have the SD9VE, I do have a number of S&W firearms. I don't think you could do bad with either choice.
The only issue I've encountered is with the S&W sights. They are a BEAR to adjust. Not undoable, but be aware that if you have to adjust the sights on a S&W, it will require nothing short of Thor's hammer to get the sights moved. However, once you have broken the seal and the sights move, you will not have that issue anymore. The Ruger Security 9 sights are easy to move.

Customer support is great from both companies and prices are similar. Overall, I don't think you'd be disappointed with choosing either one.

My vote is for the SD9VE ...

I owned a Ruger Security 9 ... The pistol I owned was not accurate to me .

You mileage may vary ..

A poll with with 2 pistols isn’t much of a poll! Seriously, for a new gun I’d have to add & vote for the Walther Creed. If you look at used guns, a Walther PPQ-M1 or a Glock 17 are great choices.

Glock 17's new are not very cheap to me. That is why I did not include them. This is about Economy guns that are new.

SD9VE

I owned one.

Needs an Apex trigger kit. Great ergos. Neighbor had to have it, so I let him.

Smith had to pay Glock big bucks for patent infringement years ago.

Both are good solid choices. I actually thought about an Security 9 for just thus exact purpose as a car gun for when I'm making deliveries. However, I live in FL and the blued finish caused me to worry about rust issues. Of these 2 guns I would choose the Smith for the stainless version.

I ended up going a different route and got a Beretta Pico as a combination car gun and discrete pocket carry gun when making deliveries.
