2AFF02E8-F7A4-4E91-B8B8-84E79A740C77.jpeg Bought this Norinco SKS today at a gun show. It’s numbers matching except for the magazine, which I figured had been changed to a high cap at some time, and changed back by someone who values the ergonomics Simonov designed.
Took it apart, and there’s almost no wear. Firing pin channel is clean, and trigger group is un-molested. Gonna shoot it tomorrow!

Very nice, please let us know how it shoots.

Regarding mags, nothing is more reliable than the 10 shot they ship with. I tried several Chicom 20 round mags of the same style (fixed internal) but they never ran right. Never a hiccup with the 10 round though.
My experience is the same as yours regarding the factory magazine; they always work well. I’ve tried a few removable types years ago, and they’re hit or miss.

Not being snotty about it in any way but rather, sincerely interested.

Does *numbers matching* really matter on Norincos? Are there a fair number of them out there that have mis-matched numbers?

I'm guessing maybe Vietnam bring-backs?

Todd.

As cheap surplus rifle numbers are drying up, matching numbers mean more, and bring a higher price, even on Norinco SKS’s and Mosin Nagants. Rifles that were dirt cheap 10-15 years ago, are demanding prices that most of us never imagined.

Cool!

Looks like just like mine (minus the bayonet) that I bought NIB as a HS Senior in the spring of '94. It was my second 4473 and still resides in my safe, soon to be exercised by my son this summer.

So then, certainly a noticeable value increase on a numbers-matching Norinco? - all things being equal.

I guess these days even if they arrived in-country matching, all those fellas pitching their factory magazines as quick as they could buy a detachable might be one of the more obvious discrepancy in numbers.

I'm a fan of keeping them bone stock the way they were issued, with the one exception of applying a slip on pad to increase the length of pull.

I went through the phase of installing a synthetic pistol grip stock, tried the 20 round Chicom internal mag (unreliable) and a 30 round detachable mag, which fed reliably but ruins the more compact profile of the internal 10 round.

Accuracy of my stock SKS's was fair, nothing to write home about but not bad for the long, gritty trigger it has, but the synthetic stock (Choate, I believe) made accuracy even worse and made the rifle less handy in the process. I ended up getting rid of that stock and going back to the original hardwood. I like the way they look in all original wood and 10 round internal.

Not sure Norincos have achieved collector status yet, but I think many guns will be safer with matching numbered parts. I kept the wood stock, but disliked the orangey shellac color, so stripped and stained to a nice walnut hue.

Mine is working fine with a 20 rd. Tapco duckbill, have a 20 round Chinese metal star mag but never tried it. Still have the original numbers matching 10 round also which would go in the gun if I ever sold it.

Good luck with your new gun!

Went to the Dixie gun show yesterday in Raleigh,N.C. it’s the largest show in our state. Matching numbers surplus rifles and pistols were marked as such, and received more attention from buyers/collectors.

Dealer of my SKS had two more Norinco’s that were matching numbers, and one was $75, and the other $100 more than mine. Both matching guns were in rough cosmetic condition, and both sold for asking price. I hate to admit I paid $400 for it, but the bluing is like new, with no rust. Wood is very good, with a few dings and scratches. They definitely aren’t getting any cheaper.

It’s the same type SKS I bought at Roses department store for $69.99 in 1990. Wish I’d bought a bunch of them then.

How I miss Roses !!!! Mosin's for $39.00 - &65.00 , Enfields #4's @ $65.00 , , I still have a unmolested 1917 Enfield.. That I my wife bought me for $175.00
And those Sporterized Enfields,.. Built as a Jungle carbine .. My brother bought one rechambered in 45/70 for $270.00 !!!!

Yes, those were the days! Enfield rifles have really increased in price. No1 mk3s were at the Dixie show were selling for $450-$600 in really bad cosmetic condition, and I’m not paying that. I’ll find one sooner or later at a decent price.

56D1C628-00B7-42A9-BC74-FFBF281A536E.jpeg Took my SKS to the farm, and set up an 8” steel target at 100 yards. Did pretty good with iron sights and my aging eyes. Trigger on this one is actually very good. I’d estimate it at 4-5 pounds, with a fairly crisp second stage. Ammo was Wolf 125 grain soft point

That is some good shooting. She's a keeper.

I said this on another sks thread, but it still applies. Get some tech-sights, but don't lose the original sights in case you decide to someday sell it. My eyes are too old for a rear sight over the chamber.

2 years ago , I had a used S&W 637
forsale on Armslist .. A fellow emailed me .. Said he had a as new Norinco SKS ...he told me he bought it new .. Oiled it up .. Put it in his safe ... We met ,,,I have no doubt he was telling truth ...
We traded .. I put 50ish rounds through it ... Accurate as as any SKS ...
I cleaned it .. Put it in my safe ...
I have a Norinco paratrooper 16inch barrel as my shooter ...
Im a fan of the 7.62x39 cartridge...
I also own a Ruger American Range in 7.62x39 ... Which Im shooting some .. It's accurate.. With cheap steel case ammo ..Im in the process of deciding on a scope ... It screams for a compact low powered scope ... But being its a plinker ( more than likely being I hunt with a 336 30-30) Im going with a 3X9X40 of some sort ...

Im glad that decent hunting ammo is being produced for the 7.62x39 .. But I'd love to see a 135-140gr SP bullet

My cousin has a Ruger American in 7.62x39, and he uses Burris Fullfield II 2-7x35 scope. It shoots just over 1” at 100 yards with Wolf 125 grain soft point. He’s the one that got me using the Wolf SP.

I like the short LOP on a SKS ..
But, my arms are so short ,

I have to stand on a step ladder to scratch my butt !!

I have a rubber 1inch thick butt pad that is made to replace the thin steel one on a SKS .. Handy dandy
