Over the years I've had the privilege to hunt seven different states for various game. Pretty much confine hunting to my home state now. Hunting magazines make some of those far away hunts seem pretty appealing.

While I don't have suicidal tendencies, always thought I'd like to try Alaskan Brown bear using only a handgun. Perhaps a test of my own skills and nerve if it began charging....would I pee my pants and go screaming like a little girl?...or face it down calmly to get the job done? It may remain one of life's unanswered questions.

What's the one out of state hunt you'd like to try?

For me the first would be a combination elk, moose and mule deer or fall sheep, mountain goat in Montana or Colorado. Of course a turkey grand slam, pronghorn hunt would be on the list as well. I've seen a few of the American huntress shows in Texas and several of the exotics would be fun too.

So many hi to so little time and money.

If I had the money for the hunt and money for the mounts I'd like a fly in week or two trophy elk hunt and native trout fishing trip in a remote area maybe in Montana. A portable camp with a guide, a younger attractive female companion for relaxation night time and ice cold beer everynight.

sounds like the 3 of use need to do a public land elk hunt. I read one time it can be done pretty cheap.

Maybe we could get a group rate for tags.
I read there are a few states where there's no lottery or anything. Just buy your out of state license for $100 and is the public lands. I may not be a big 400+ inch elk but I really don't care. I'd even go for a cow elk. I don't want to hijack this thread so maybe use the ny hunters thread.

With all the ranched exotic game available to hunt in Texas, only the big cats are prohibited but I'm not really interested in hunting big cats.

I'd like to hunt antelope and elk further north than the Texas Panhandle before I croak. Antelope season is only 9 days in Texas.

When I was a lot younger I had thoughts of hunting moose, elk, big bear, caribou, basically everything in North America. For whatever reason Africa never called my name. But as you get older reality sets in. When working and raising a family taking tme off during the Fall just wasn't a reality. I taught and coached HS football. All of my hunting was in late November-January before retiring.

Moose is just too expensive and hard to get tags for. Alaskan Brown bear is EXPENSIVE. Figure about $20,000 for a hunt and much more is possible. The taxidermist that I used found it was a lot cheaper to go to Russia to hunt brown bear than Alaska. That was a few years ago, not sure if that still holds true. I will visit Alaska one day, but I won't hunt there.

I've made elk my bucket list game animal and one day I might spend the money for a guided hunt for a really big whitetail. Both of those are realistic and possible with my finances. I've spent quite a bit of time traveling, hiking, and camping all over the west in prime elk country. But most of that was during summer months. I've had a chance to hunt there twice since retiring without scoring. But will continue to try DIY mountain hunts as long as my health lets me. I really want to do this without a guide, but if I don't make it happen in another year or 2 will hire one.

I used to live on the Western Slope of CO and in Northern NV - once you, as basically a flatlander, get into those elevations, you had BETTER be in great shape and be prepared for sudden and extreme climate/weather. Good luck with your quest! Elk os not something I would do alone, especially in unfamiliar country; you're best served with folks who know the area and have horses.....................

Pronghorns and bears (black). Wyoming seems to be the spot that calls out to me the loudest, but I hear good things about several western states. I’ve not been to any western states, so what do I know? (HI, but I meant in the lower 48)

I've always wanted to go on a elk hunt, maybe one were you camp for the week. Don't know what state is best nowadays.

but one I can afford is help the southern states with there pig problems
Ditto on the elk.
