I visited a local Walmart the other day and went looking for a cheap sling, Hoppes and a bottle of scent free hunting detergent and noticed that all the slings, gun cleaner, ear plugs, scent free soap, deer calls, flashlights, etc. are all locked up behind glass. I started noticing other trends at other Walmart's where they are locking up planned parenting items and actually have to walk you to the register with them now. I visit 3 Walmart frequently and they all are going the same way. Ammo is almost completely gone. I thought it was just rifle and pistol ammo? Its sad I cant even buy a sling and Hoppes. Now they are even putting automatic openers that prohibit you from leaving the store unless you go through a register. I forgot my wallet the other night and had to find a register I could slide between to leave the store. I shop there because its cheap and I can get everything in one hit, but this is getting ridiculous.

Same thing happened at the one near me. Once they got rid of pistol and most the rifle ammo that doesn't really leave much in the way of ammo to be sold. Since the cases are left I'm guessing they just are now using them for other items likely to be stolen. I was always surprised at how "open" Walmart is given how busy it is and how little attention the employees pay to anything. I know one local police dept has been complaining for years about how easy walmart makes it to steal from them and how a majority of the police calls in the small city was from 1 business - Walmart.

In the town I grew up in. About a hour away from my current home. They have socks and underwear locked up.

I know certain items are considered high theft like baby formula and the high end razor blades, but Hoppes??
I understand formula and maybe pregnancy tests, but walking someone to the register with contraceptives is getting crazy. I also believe they make you buy the Hoppes and stuff at the sporting goods counter now. Way too inconvenient for me.

The Walmart by me the gun cleaning stuff is right there on the shelves out in Sporting Goods. I guess the OP lives in an area where theft is more prevalent?
That's the thing... This is in a suburb where half the parking lot is Benz, Audi, Porsche, BMW. The one with these closing gates is in the country. Nothing but farm land for miles.

They do all that and then have self-checkout. I've unintentionally left a store without paying for everything when going through a self-checkout lane.

They don't invest in that stuff unless the loss it stops is greater than what it all costs.

I realize the rationale for locking up Hoppes and slings may not be readily apparent, but it could be as simple as the fact that the sporting and gun accessory aisle had lockable furniture and they found what would fit in it.

Regardless of whether some guests "deserve" the treatment they get from a company, whether a store, a restaurant, or an airline, people should look for opportunities to do business with vendors and suppliers that have found ways to show them respect and courtesy.

The 4 Walmart's near me are all 24hr. stores. That's a plus to me. Most of the gun stuff is out in the open although I try to buy my gun stuff from my LGS. Trying to help them stay in business.

I remember when dove season would start up in the fall and the local Walmart would have shotgun shell displays on the end cap of a couple different aisles near the register. I imagine those days must be long gone by now.

It’s likely up to a district manager or similar, all shotshells are on end caps here.

Regardless, its a garbage company and I avoid it unless its the only option (which it is in many towns as they forced other businesses out).

I don't have any issues with Walmart. Haven't shopped there in almost 20 years. Made sure they weren't in any of my investments about the same time I stopped shopping there.

You must live in an gentrified upscale area were folk wear such stuff.
North Atlanta currently. Grew up on South side suburbs. Alot of home invasion's, B&Es, robberies. Going on down there now. Inherited my childhood home. Debating on selling not renting.

According to the WM manager here these plans have been in work for several years. Several times I've called to verify they have items that they wouldn't carry many of were in stock only to be told yes and get there and none on shelf. Last time it was an air compressor that went on sale. Was told 2 on shelf. The manager looked all over their stock rooms but no compressor. I asked how it shows in stock but not there and they told me it most likely went out the door. A stand up compressor just out the door? 2 of them? Yes. You would not believe how many big screen TVs just disappear every year. One problem is even if an hourly employee see someone stealing it takes a salary manager seeing it to make it fact. Plus only thing the manager can do is report it to police. Once out the door they can't detain them.
What they are doing is what majority of big stores I've been to in Mexico do. Doors in, the only way out is through check out area. Most common theft items will be walked to check out. Probably have large bags in store restrictions too. Stores in Mexico have locker area at entrance to store your bags and even large purses till you are leaving. They are free and guarded and chit is used for ID. Foresee entrance doors nonopperational for exit except if fire. A lot of stores already moved the order pick up service to front of store. That was the first step. Lots of people would go to back to pick up stuff and just add to it on the way out. TV in a box? No problem just wave a reciept and on out the door. Hourly employees didn't care. They to lowly to know if someone was stealing anyway. Couldn't detain them without being fired.
Most all stores now you can't do anything to detain once they are out the door.

Many times it's because of theft. Also specific items per location vary. Not a surprise socks and underwear are one of the most stolen items.

This Walmart one has been floating around a long time.

They are who they are and things like this happen from statistical facts. Don't have to like it but have to accept it, as the saying goes.
