Need a Workhorse Pistol

The M&P 1.0 is commonly known to need a trigger replacement to improve it

I have 2 M&P 2.0 compacts. The factory trigger in these are a vast improvement to the 1.0's. The 19's are a great gun, but the 2.0 fits me a lot better. And, I have never had an issue so far with the 2.0.

Plus, the 2.0's can be had for less than the 19's.

I have three of the 1.0 M&Ps. I put in a $40 Apex sear in my carry pistol (M&P40c) and did some polishing and it is a very nice 4.5lbs or so.

Some folks hate the hinged trigger but I just don't notice it that much.

I prefer a hinge to a dingus.

I have owned tons of guns over 20+ years - 3 digits worth of guns....

For the past 5 years - I have been carrying my HK P2000 9mm DA/SA. In fact, this month marks my 5th year. I have owned 12 HK pistols over the years - the P2000 is my favorite HK.

VERY well built gun. Glock 19 sized too.

Something glock 19 like but not a 19?

First thought would be a Ruger SR9c. Proven firearm that definitely (IMO) feels better holding then a Glock19.
It can be had for $259-299.

i think pretty much all the compact striker-fired guns have been recommended at this point.

Since grip-feel is holding you back on a lot of the more common options you should try to find a CZ p07 to hold.

Olympus

Workhorse 9mm. pistol that does everything fairly well and is reliable, durable, and accurate:

1) Ruger SR9c
2) CZ P07
3) Glock G19
4) CZ P01
5) Colt Commander

See, it is a personally driven issue. I have shot the SR9, and I did not care for it. So, find what YOU like. Not everyone else's favorite gun. When you find what you like, then ask about that 1 model and get opinions.

The G19 is never a bad choice. But I've been impressed with the 2.0 version of the M&P.

I also have the full size M17 version of the Sig 320 which I like. They offer 2 grip styles on the 320, the one on the M17 is fine with me, the other less so. You might want to check out both 320 grip styles before discounting that pistol. I like it well enough that I will probably end up with the compact M18 down the road.

Not everyone cares, but the M&P and Sig offer versions with, or without a 1911 style safety. I grew up on a 1911 and find this a feature I like. Not an option with Glock.

Another option is the Sig 365. With the standard 10 round magazines it is not much bigger than the 6 round G43. But you have the option of using 12 and 15 round magazines in it. I find that I shoot mine every bit as good as my larger G19. With the 10 round mags it is my IWB gun, with 12 rounders it does everything I can do with my G19 and is easily carried OWB. And once again is offered with or without a 1911 style safety.

G19--M&P 2.0 Compact--APX Centurion

I own all 3 of these and all are good guns-----currently, the Smith and Beretta are screaming deals compared to the Glock and they fit better in my hand-----I find myself moving away from Glock and the brick like feel. The price difference would allow you to pick up extra mags--even it they cost a little more.

Your HK P2000 picture prompted me to do my biannual HK research project - I never buy one, just look into them.

This time, I ran across this from a forum member named Shipwreck ;)...

I have a USPc - I went back and forth and went w/ that over the P2000 because I wanted to keep it cocked and locked...

That was a long, long time ago... I did used to have a 9mm USPc. I then also got a P2000 around 2008 or so (I was able to rent one and shoot it, and I really liked the way it handled)... But, I later sold both. However, I missed the P2000 after I sold it. I went thru a lot of other HKs over the years - but missed the P2000 the most. It was my favorite of all the 12 HKs I have owned.

I bought another P2000 with factory night sights in Feb 2015 - that is the one I have now. In fact, it has been my carry gun for 5 years this month. I have not carried cocked and locked since I had that USPc.

Interestingly enough - while the frames are almost the same between the two guns - I shoot the P2000 better than I did the USPc

Olympus I wanted to correct myself. I stated I paid about $20.00 for my spare M&P magazines. I did a search & about the best price I can find is around $30.00. I think I did pay $25.00. Anyway I do think you should dry fire an M&P 2.0 for yourself & not base you opinion of the trigger on the posts of others. Maybe you should go to a rental range & try out some of your options.

Assuming the M&P M2.0 Compact is your choice:
I believe Palmetto has run M&P 17-Round Mags for 5 for $99.99 on special a few times. The extra sleeves were $1 a piece from S&W Customer Service. A wrap of painters tape at the bottom of the mags will keep them from shifting when carried as spares. Arrow did have used mags for $13.99 but I think they are out right now.

I am currently carrying a M&P M2.0 Compact .40 S&W with several thousand rounds (including 700 rounds of 180 gr Gold Dot "Seconds") and it has been exemplary. CDNN Sports has 13-Round $24.99 and 15-Round $24.89 right now.

If not a Glock 19, then why not a Glock 23? Same size as the 19, but in 40- often available cheap on the second hand/ LE turn in market. I have an older 23 that I carry as a hunting sidearm.

I hesitate to recommend the G23 trade-in becausea re-reading the original post he alludes to having a smaller handsize or shorter fingers. The effective reach to the trigger is longer on the G23 Gen 3 than the M&P. That said the G23 Gen 3 as a used trade-in is sightly cheaper than the M&P M2.0 Compact and is certainly a fine pistol.

The G23 Gen IV NIB unissued trade-in (allows a shorter reach but not as short as the M&P) is usually more expensive than the M&P M2.0 Compact. The unissued G23 Gen IV is usually close to $400 where as I paid $299.99 for a new M2.0 Compact (Yes I know that's rock bottom of price range).

I also find the M&P a softer shooting pistol in .40 S&W but honestly think this has more to with individual hand fit and grip than most credit.

In reality neither is the wrong choice. It is simply what fits his hand size the best and personal preference.

glock 19 is the right choice if it fits your hands and you like the way it shoots and you dont want a manual safety. every other maker in plastics has been trying to imitate it and/or replace it for niches such as hand fit, safety, grip angle etc as I described already.

plenty of other good choices, but glock 19 is the pick.

Nothing to add to that.

If the trigger reach is a little long try an M&P.

If something is not just right on either try a Sig PPQ, FN-509 or HK VP9 or if price is an issue a Ruger SR9.

To many options today to have to train to overcome deficits in fit or preference.

I actually went through this with a friend selecting a carry gun. He ended up shooting a P229 the best and liked the manual of arms but wasn't comfortable with a Police Trade and had budget issues. We ended up getting him a new SP2022 for $349.99. He has been very happy with the purchase.

I have bought the M&P 2.0 in 9mm with the 4 inch barrel for my gal....I have shot about 500 rounds thru it....pretty damn nice for the dollar spent.

Don't take this the wrong way. Your gal may relax with the .454 Casull when the .500 Linebaugh gets a little intense.

But based on my experience with the .40 S&W ( and a limited amount with a 4.25" 9mm barrel) I really think it would be hard to find a softer shooting 9mm in the same weight class.
