Need a Workhorse Pistol

Work horse gun that includes woods carry-says revolver. Basically a .357 mag 3 inch barrel L-frame gun with decent adjustable sights.
I am in the deep south. The most common thing that I shoot with a pistol are water moccasins. I carry a revolver loaded with number 12 shot. As already mentioned the black bear has returned and sightings of cougar occur. We also have the feral pigs along with meth cookers. Then we have the eastern coyotes that are getting bigger.

Guns that are considered work horses are usually all metal solid state guns like Colt 1911s, BHP, H&K, CZ 75b, Ruger P series, and lastly HPs. The Ruger GP100 is considered the workhorse of revolvers.

They may be "considered" workhorses, but the facts are pretty much undisputed...the basic Glock has gone through a HUGE number of rediculous torture tests and consistiently continues to operate and function...even with cracked slides.

I'm not taking anything away from the "beloved" metal guns, but few of them can run with little to no maintenance or go more rounds without issues than any 9MM glock you pullout of a box. The Beretta 92's can run a long time without maintenance, but 1911's? Great guns, but I will call BS on them running for thousands of rounds without some serious TLC.

I have well over 6K in my Ruger sr1911 no BS but it's only a few years old i replaced my recoil spring just as prevented maintenance not that I was having a problem

All firearms need maintenance
At some point

The OP is not talking about living in the wilderness for years without being able to clean or service his gun. A properly built 1911 will run for ever with just a little oil. Call all the BS you want but they did just fine through a few wars. The same can be said for the 92FS and the BHP. The Glock as never been fielded as the primary side arm in a major conflict. That does not take away from the fact they are durable long lasting reliable guns.

In the end just about any gun the OP picks is going to work. The real issue for me is mindset. A gun is just a tool. Use the tool in whatever way you want. It does not care. It is a machine and if it is built properly it will function. It has no choice. The Glock is a great choice. I have custom guns that I treat like tools. They are made to be shot, carried and worn out.

That said if you asked me you get to have 50 pistols for the end of the world I would choose 25 Glock 19s and 25 Glock 17s. Magazine commonality and parts commonality and the ability to battle field pick up guns, mags, ammo etc... would be higher with Glock more than any other gun. The 19 and the 17 these days rule the world. For me however they have no soul. They are lifeless hunks of metal and plastic so I choose other guns to tote around on a daily. As Ken Hackathorn once told me you can wear a Rolex or a Timex. Both will tell you the time accurately enough. ;)

I like my pistols with no soul. :D
It can be bland as long as it follows orders.

In the end if it is properly built it has no choice. It does not have to be high to be built properly. People don't want to admit it but this is a pretty reliable gun.

That said this is my current 45 ACP workhorse. "Its a tool box... I don't care you put the tools in for the job that's all..." -Sam from Ronin

I guess my Sig M17 is my work horse pistol, I got it as an M17 but got the X Carry upper for it to carry a shorter barrel, as well as the Legion upper/module for target shooting. It's three guns in one, kinda hard to beat.

That would be the pistol updated to fix the minor imperfections. IE Glock Perfection - Gen 2 Glock 17.

Unfortunately since then an ongoing program to make it unperfect (Shorting, caliber conversions, aftermarket parts, later Gens etc has been in effect).

After all if the OEM G17 Gen 2 was perfection anything else has to be less than.

Just read through all 17 pages of that post. What a wealth of information!

My best do everything gun is my XD mod 2 compact in .45 acp.

Small enough for easy conceal.
Large enough with the extended magazine that is is very controllable for quick follow up shots.
Good magazine capacity.
Spits out good sized wads of lead. I feel comfortable against 4 legged creatures and 2 legged creatures alike.
Handles the hot loads without complaining.
Shoots target loads without a malfunction.
(Shoots basically everything I have ever fed it)
Great ergos for my hand. Very easy to hang onto without a death grip.
Points Well and balances well with both the extended and flush magazines.
Incredibly reliable.
Not too heavy that I dread carrying it but heavy enough it handles well.
Great safety systems but completely unobtrusive.
Well built but surprisingly affordable, if I loose it for some reason or another it won't be the end of the World.
Great trigger. Easy to shoot well but not so light that I worry about accidental discharges.
Good visual and physical indicator for loaded chamber. I can tell if I have one in the chamber by looking or feel. The same with the cocked indicator.
Smooth edges out of the box, not much to catch on anything.

When I bought my XD mod 2 compact I really didn't expect to like it any where near as much as I do.

I have pistols that I enjoy shooting more and guns that I like for carrying more but the XD mod 2 checks more boxes than any other single gun I own. What ever single characteristic you want to judge a pistol on I have another pistol that is better... but usually not by much.

I forgot one thing about the XD mod 2... Its parts are well labeled so I know which part I am supposed to hold onto... Lol!

Browning Hi-Power . Never seen anyone pick one up that didn't comment on how good it felt in the hand . Out of production , but plenty still for sale . Triggers need work , but so do most pistols . I will never sell mine .

According to Bill Wilson his cleaning regime for a 1911. Is "Pop the slide off, wipe the carbon off, especially the rails and barrel, lube and run another 300 rounds". According to him the only issues he ever has are ammunition related.

Well guys I ended up going with the M&P 2.0 Compact. I ordered 4 extra mags for it also, two 15-rounders and two 17-rounders for a total of 6 mags altogether. Still need to get a light for, but looking forward to getting it. Grabagun has them for $389.99 currently.

I would have sold you one with a kydex holster and 4 mags shipped for under $389.99. Its in the trading post here.

3.6" or 4.0"?

Mine is a .40 S&W 4.0" (Although I do have a 4.25" 9mm barrel for it) but I carry 13+1 in the gun and a 15 round spare.

I have the two OE 13-Round and four 15-Round. I ordered spare mag sleeves from S&W Customer Service (they were supposed to be a $1 each but when I asked to buy two the girl on the phone sent me four for free).

If I haven't already mentioned it on this thread, I use a wrap of cloth gaffer's tape on the bottom of the mag tube to keep the mag sleeve from migrating on the spare mag.

I hope it serves you well.

Went with the 4” which is what I wanted all along.

I was going to suggest the Beretta APX Centurion, rugged, reliable, inexpensive, ugly. That or a used Glock 19.

But the M&P will certainly work for you too, well chosen.
