I am looking for a upcoming wedding gift for my now girlfriend. This is a long term prospect, like 12-36 months out, but I need to start saving now. She claims to love purses and guns.

I'd love your opinion on what I could get. I am thinking something fancy; a matching handgun set. Something like a collectors piece. Ornate? Something in a box. This is nice. My budget is $10,000 for pair of guns, box, shipping, ffl, etc.

Thank you all!

Way too many variables; what types of guns does she like? Is she looking to CC the gun in a purse? Something else?

A nice pair of Ed Brown/Baer/Wilson 1911s is nice

Yikes! 10,000!?

Does she like guns, or does she like to shoot? A nice USPSA rig is a bunch cheaper than that! If she likes to shoot, I'd go that way!

These would be display pieces. They wouldn't be for taking around town and shooting often.

She likes both. She is way more experienced than I am. She has lots of carry handguns. This would be something special, which is why I'm here for advice. I'd definitely a novice in the gun world.

George P asks sound questions. If this is for your future wife you'll definitely need input from her as to what kind of gun she would like and then maybe see about getting some sort of marital sentiment engraved on it. Have her Google "concealed carry purses" to get her feedback on if: 1) that's something that interests her, and 2) to get an idea of what's out there in designer purses!

Man, that is great advice. Especially about the wedding engraving. I'll find a way to get input. Thank you sir.

I know this isn't a straight on answer - but if you and she together are not wealthy, $10,000 might be better invested than spent on a symbolic functional and very expensive gun gift. Apart from that, this is so personal and important to both of you, it's impossible for an outsider to make a guess. As you save your money - take a lot of time to know and be sure before buying something. A person who has a lot of experience in an area (like her with guns and shooting) may also have very particular and refined tastes in that area. If this is meant to be a surprise you really need to research what will really, really make her happy.

Agreed 100%. I'm in research phase now. Pricewise, I don't know what these things cost, honestly; I just threw out a number. I saw an auction with a patching pair for an ungodly amount. I need to ask her more questions about what her tastes are. I am not going for impressing her, I'm over that stage in life. I want something sentimental. But need to clearly define why I am doing this still.

I gave one of my closest friends and his new wife a pair of matched Colt 1911 Competition models. One stainless, one blued, swapped the slides, safety, etc so they were opposite two-toned, basic trigger job.

Ebony grips on the stainless frame, bonded ivory on the blued frame, and I inlaid both grips with one each of their initials in 3/4" round sterling silver (bought as earrings) under clear epoxy.

Both were presented together in a nice walnut presentation box with a plaque I had engraved at a trophy shop.

I want to say the whole setup ran me around $3,000 or so, and I did a lot of my own work, but that's where I went last time this type of thing came up for me.

I did the same earring monogram inlay trick for my fiancee on a pre-b cz75, it's inexpensive and gets a good reaction.

Do you have any pictures or more information about this, please?

I am a fan of the investing thing. Invest in something (Gold, silver, land) with atarget sell date, maybe 10 years, and designate the money to go towards any gun, vacation, shooting experience at that time. That way you will undoubtedly have more than you started with, and if you guys break up before that, you will get half back. Sorry, I am a realist not a romantic. Too many friends been down that road. Someone older, and close to me once told me a story about he and his wife when they first got married, 50 years ago. She wanted a fur coat, and they had zero money at the time, because he had just took a mortgage on a house, and bought a cheap company in the same year. He told her "I can buy you a Chinchilla coat now, or buy you the whole farm one day". She went with the 2nd option, and it worked out. My point is that if you're talking about a 10k gift at the first stages in your relationship, there are likely better things to do with that amount of money, which will pay off in long term far more than a gift. When you're married for 10, 20 years and happy, 10k is a fine milestone gift. Also, without knowing anything about her, you are setting a gifting expectation from the start, which you may need to live up to in future years. I didn't answer your question directly, but see an opportunity to relay observational experience.

Also, if I had it to do over again, I would've had a super small wedding with only immediate family, and small party at someone's house, would've invested or put down payment on a house with the many thousands spent on making everyone else happy at the ceremony, nobody remembered it 2 years later.

My wife of 22 years agrees.

If she's a big time shooter, and you aren't I'd shy away from guns. There are a whole lot of ways to burn $10k on guns, and only one of them will be the right way. If you are wealthy enough that $10K spent the wrong way isn't a significant burden, then you have some options. Even then, firearms as a whole is so incredibly broad that it is very difficult to suggest something without knowing a lot more about the two of you. She may have a lot of handguns, but may really want a heirloom quality shotgun. She may want a custom full house heirloom 1911, or a set of fully engraved flintlock dueling pistols, etc. She may be perfectly set on guns, and want to go to a week long training class or 3, she may want to go hunt Africa, etc. Saying she's into firearms, is kind of like saying she's into Art. Yes you can easily drop $10k, but good luck spending it on the right thing to make them happiest for the money.

Lastly the following raises some flags to me:

I am looking for a upcoming wedding gift for my now girlfriend. ... She claims to love purses and guns.

The "for my now girlfriend" implies this is a rather recent relationship, how certain is marriage? Secondly the "claims to love purses and guns." This implies to me that this is again a very new relationship, as you sound as though you are not certain what she likes. I applaud you for planning to save a significant chunk of change, regardless of how things play out that is never a bad plan.
