I’m a huge Tikka and Sako fan but I’ve been eyeballing the Winchester WE in 300 WSM at my local gun shop. I’ve got a 338 Remington Ultra Mag in a Sendero. Way too heavy for totin around gun. Got my 300 Win mag barrel for my TC encore but hate taking the 270 barrel on and off. I had the 300 WSM in a Tikka T3 but it went to my oldest son who loves it. I know it’s the web but I’m reading about 50% good and bad reviews of this rifle. Also reading it’s not manufactured here with Winchester’s older quality control. I’d like to hear some input from the forum before throwing 12-1300 out the door. Most problems I’ve read is it’s poor bedding job. That can be done but might as well go back to Tikka or fork out more for the Sako than buy new and start gunsmithing on it from the start. I’m only interested in accurate guns and am a tad worried from what I’m reading.

Anecdotal, FWIW:

I've got one, in 308. Might be the best out of the box Winchester I've owned. FN is doing some amazing stuff with quality control, and the trigger is great; different than the older triggers (which I also love), but very well designed. Stock is very nice; I might swap it for an Eccols Edge fill one day to match its twin, but I haven't because, well, it's a perfectly adequate, even superlative stock in its own right.

Thank goodness we don't have to suffer with Winchester's "older" (i.e., 80's, 90's, 2000's) quality control any more.... So far, I'm a fan on where Winchester's future is heading.

My EW that I bought for a donor 280AI build had a great trigger that my Smith was able to get down to just over 3 lbs where I like for a field gun. I was impressed with the stock trigger, and it was nice not having to spend the money on a Timney or the like.

Well...

1. That rifle is $987 on line.
2. The parts are made at FN-USA and assembled at Browning in Portugal.
3. I have one in .270 WCF - and it's an absolute Jewel.
4. It's also a bit heavier and bulkier than the Tikka.

I had one in 270 WSM. South Carolina gun. Pretty well made, not too light, not too heavy. It had more perceived recoil than my other WSM but that is subjective. Accuracy was above average. Only reason I sold is that I am more of a Kimber/ Ruger guy. But it was a good rifle. Trigger was OK. Would I buy another? Yes if I needed the caliber. My most exciting new bolt rifle is a Weatherby Mark V Weathermark.

adding:
I have been toying with the idea of getting a winny in a win caliber like 243, or 270 and a Rem in a rem caliber like 25-06.

If you want a USA made 270 check this out:

You may have misunderstood me a/o my post.

FN/Winchester M70 parts are manufactured in the SC/USA plant, the stock being a Bell and Carlson/USA, and assembled at the Browning plant in Portugal.

There is absolutely nothing wrong, or anything I don't like about this rifle.

Quality/Material/Fit/Finish/Weight/Balance/Handling/Performance.

I didn't want a "Mountain Rifle" - and it ain't.

It is a beauty of a field beast.

Although it wasn't an Extreme Weather, my friend bought a Model 70 last year, and it is an impressive rifle.

On the topic of the Extreme Weather version, Winchester has a really good-looking one with a grey Cerakote. I believe it is a limited run. That muzzle brake is preventing me from ordering one, but if that doesn't bother you, it's worth a look.

No misunderstanding.

I bought an EW a few months ago in 338WM. I don’t have much field time with it in the field. But I have plenty of trigger time with it. Shoots “meh” with SuperFormance 200gr SST’s ~2-2.5” groups. Handloads are at an inch or better if I do my part. Has a really good trigger. Love the B&C stock actually. But there’s no way I’m dropping a new price of $1,200 on one. But then again, I’m ridiculously frugal when it comes to buying guns. And I get some great deals.

Nice to know that lower price. Even what I had saw on line was closer to 1250. Our gun store is about the same out the door with tax. Glad I asked here first. I’m not looking for light. Just not 12 lb Sendero heavy.

They can be found online for just over $900 new for the 30-06 family at least.

I can attest to the terrible bedding that can come from Winchester. My Safari Express pattered like a shotgun until I had the bedding replaced. The Smith cleaned up a bad crown too and now it shoots like a dream.

That being said, I really want an EW in 30-06.

I’ve been all over gun broker and cheapest I can find on buy it now is at $1199. Can’t find any web sights in $900 range. Where did anyone see these at those prices.

+2, for the two I have, one on .30-06 and one in 7mm RM. Best hunting rifles I own in terms of performance, accuracy, durability. As GR says, "It is a beauty of a field beast."

My Safari was the same way, actually. Tried going with the wood stock, and in the end replaced everything but the action.

My EW was an entirely different animal.

Well...

I already provided you a link for an EW/SS in .300 WSM.

"1. That rifle is $987 on line."

Just click it and add to cart.

I own an EW in .308; a very fine, quality rifle. I do not know of the bedding quality, I have never looked. It shoots cheaper .308 (ie WW white box 150) into an inch at 100; my hand loads into 1/2”. I paid $1,059 for the rig and I was/ am very happy. I also own a Kimber 84m CCS (also has bedding complaints on the net but again, I have never looked) in .308 with the “mini” M70 action, it shoots exactly as well as the M70 EW. My preference is the M70 action so that is what I buy. Again, I am very pleased with my EW.

If you are interested in buying an Extreme Weather in 270 Win vs 300 WSM, I have one that I would sell for $725. Very few rounds down the tube. Good shooting rifle. I just don’t need it.

Love my m70 Laredo in 300 Win mag.

1x fired free range pickup brass, 30+ year old projos, 25+ year old powder and primers that were more than halfway to retirement got me 3" moa @100 yards.

With modern components and modern ammunition give ME a 1" moa rifle.
(I've seen it do better in others hands)
