So I have a gift certificate from my daughter to a local guns and fishing store and thought I'd try to spend it on something besides ammo.


I'm not very knowledgeable about knives and steels etc

This one peaked my interest. To be used as a general campy general use type knife.

Can someone tell me the pros and cons of the 5160 spring steel and any other genral info about this knife?

I'm assuming the steel might help the tip be stronger from snapping off...?

Looks like a very tough knife and IMHO, a nice size. Seems to have a decent heat treat/hardness which will help with holding the edge. I often use a 119 for those general uses and it works just fine. I've started using it to field dress deer too. The one you're considering would do anything a 119 will and just in general be a stronger knife. I like carbon steel knives just fine. The main con is lack of corrosion resistance. But for me at least, I don't have problems keeping non-stainless knives in fine shape. One sometimes overlooked pro with steel like that one is the edge does not chip easily at all.

5160 is an ideal steel for very large knives or swords. Takes a good edge, but is much more likely to spring back or bend instead of chipping or breaking, when compared to many other knife steels.

Less likely to rust or break than 52100, though 52100 can probably take a sharper edge and keep it longer.

What about the cerakote finish? Anything I should be concerned about such as when sharpening or....?

It doesn't need to look pretty long term but if it has a coating, I want it to last or be all removed and let me worry about rust.



Looks like the street price is pretty reasonable too.

That's the same price as my local guns and fishing store I mentioned above. Amazon be damned.


At $100, it would the most expensive knife I've bought. I'm sure a lot of you may laugh at that and thats ok. I realize my short comings. :)
 
I've not seen that knife yet, but can't find anything to not like. It looks like Bucks answer to the Esee 4.
Exactly what I thought. It's a nice-looking knife for sure, with a handle that looks comfortable and well executed. At the price point, seems like a good buy, and a little less strain on the wallet than the comparable ESEEs. Doesn't have the "skull-crusher" with lanyard hole like the Ontario RAT knives, but you may not care.
 
I like everything about it ! Looks like a great knife. Bos Heat treatment a BIG plus , especially good on 5160 ! looks very well designed and great guarantee. Great knife size for deer and pig processing .
