.45 Black Powder Magnum

I've never actually seen an antique Walker that was converted to fire metallic cartridges, but they could be out there. I think things like the .45 BPM, .45-60-225 and my own .44-55 Walker are mostly just fun 'what-ifs.' If power were the only goal we'd all be better off just buying a .44 Magnums. Well, OK, I did that too...

OK I just googled it and Wikipedia (a great site) describes the 45 BPM as a relatively modern concoction using 460 magnum brass (the brass only) for converted Walker replicas to be able to use full loads with cartridges. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.45_Black_Powder_Magnum. There is even a load chart with different projectile weights, bullet types, and powder charges with goex fffg

Those velocities would be tremendous if someone were to use Olde Eynsford, Swiss, or Triple 7. As is my ROA can get close to those, if not match them, using Olde E or T7 from what little chronographed results are out there.

He actually started in his quest wanting a 45-70 Walker and I had a hell of a time explaining that the rims were too large....but he insisted. Then he started trying to quote internet musings about 444 marlin fitting in a 45-70. I explained this a lot and was already building my “Brimstone” Conversion (Dragoon with barrel cut back, Walker length Kirst and 460 chamber) and suggested that....he poo pooed the idea. Eventually I told him I wouldn’t build him one because he just seemed too Squirreley. He got Dave Clements to rechamber a Howell drop in (which I wouldn’t trust in this caliber) and proceeded to “test” his loads with a string and tire and partial charges, leaving tremendous airspace in the cartridges. I tuned out hoping to not see the carnage. I do a lot of these on a custom basis and do quite a few mods to the arbor bedding and the arbor attachment. No customer issues all these years. Ballistics with a short barrel will be terrible......

This Brimstone uses 60 grns of powder pushing a 250 grn bullet? D@mn!!! Any idea on the velocity?

My customers are reporting 1250 to 1400 FPS depending on barrel night and brand/granulation of powder

That is exceptional! I expect I’m getting close to the low end with my 195 grn bullet and a weighed 38 grns of 3F. Nowhere near as potent but I guess I’m around 450-500 ft/lbs judging by similar chronographed loads. I’ve considered having the Ruger chambers deepened so as to stretch the lead to about 250 grns, something I’d prefer to sling at a piggie. As is I estimate I could get it to maybe 215 grns or so.

Hi Fellas, I'm looking to get a Uberti Walker to convert into .45 bpm/ Brimstone, but there's almost no information on how to go about this. Can anyone point me towards resources to get this done?

I have heard of some fellow calling himself "Hoof Hearted" who apparently does some kind of work on old revolvers. I don't know anything about him though, other than that he's kind of funny-looking. http://www.cartridgeconversion.com

Thank you, Gents.
Here you go! Best of luck.

Quick question and I’m not a gunsmith, but after having seen this conversion, can a standard Walker cylinder be fitted to a Dragoon? Seems like a great way to get even more Boom! out of my beloved 3rd models.

No. The frame is the same length, but the cylinder is shorter and the forcing cone is longer.

Yes you can, (sorry expat ) just reduce the forcing cone bung at the breech end of the barrel. Of course a 7 1/2" tube won't be as efficient as the 9" tube of the Walker but the cool factor is off the chart!! Oh . . . make sure the arbor length is fixed beforehand!!

OK, Mike! I assumed PowderMark was just swapping cylinders without any machining.

Yes, I guess my question would have been better stated, can you “reduce the forcing cone bung” to fit the longer cylinder?
Thanks for your responses!

Since I am now in the "thinking about it" phase on getting a Rossi Circuit Judge, which has an 18" long barrel and 3 inch .410 chambers, my interest is renewed with the .45 BPM. I know that most here have only used the .45 BPM for converted Walkers, but what velocities could I expect from an 18 inch barrel?

Paging @Hoof Hearted
