Down at the gunshop this morning hanging out & in walks a Sheriffs dept. Sgt. carrying an evil looking black rifle case. Inside the case was a select fire M-14. Got to fondle it, tried to talk him into letting me shoot it but wasn't successful (Hey, it's taxpayer ammo!). Deputy is the Son-in-law of the store owner, I'll keep working on him.
He was shopping for tactical cases for the other 12 M14's the dept. owns.
New addition to the rack at the dealer too, an M1 Garand Blue Sky import. Only $895.

I have had the "pleasure" of shooting a full auto M14 and all I have to say is you better hold on for dear life. I am not small and I have a little experience shooting full auto and the M14 is simply a beast. I totally understand why they took the selector switch off of them.

That being said it is a hell of alot of fun. Kind of like a ride at an amusement park.

IMHO a PD has absolutely no need for full auto M14s, heck the military doesn't have a need for full auto M14s.

Regarding the full-auto M14s: I used to work with a guy who used a full-auto M14 a lot in viet-nam. He tried to take the easy way, joined the Navy, and ended up a Sea-Bee. Oops.

Anyway, the unit he was in (his job largely involved walking next to bulldozers under fire) had converted all their M14s back to select fire. They only did so because they had the equipment and base time to change the barrels all the time (no idea how they got enough spares). He said they could burn one up in a single day, no problem. With mag changes (as opposed to belt fed) that must imply a pretty light barrel and generally insufficient cooling for a gun designed to be full auto (however hastily).

He didn't complain about recoil, but he was a big guy, and my impression is they didn't aim a lot; just trying to get bullets downrange. I think he would have loved the AR-15.

My small dept. has two of them. Also 3 select fire m16's. I fired a 5 round burst, and never want to again,(out of the m14's) One is a TRW,and one is a H. R. W got the m14's,'cause at the time, they were out of m16's. I wish we could get some Tommy's or M3's The m16's, are ok. My main patrol carbine, is a winchester wrangler .44 mag, with the BIG loop lever. I feel much better armed with this, than a full m14. :D YMMV

Full automatic shoulder fired arms...

are an idea that is better on paper than on the ground.

As much as I have deep and fond feelings for M-14 rifles, the fully auto feature is pretty useless. The only way it has any accuracy at all (for hostiles, I mean) is from a bi-pod. And then it empties magazines so fast it's hard to keep loaded.

On semi-auto, they will strike down members of the unholy about as far as you can see and hold.

Don't get me started on MAC 10s.

You fold up the butt flap and pulling down hard it CAN fire effective 3-5round bursts, by quick trigger manipulation, within say 50 meters.. When I was young and high and tight I thought it was the modern BAR ! One hell of a hootch entry weapon!;)

Mine has one of Hawk's dummy selector lock kits. Most people don't notice it but those who do usually go :what:

Oy, you know how much USGI barrels are fetching these days? Aarrgh. :(

Ehh... I respectfully disagree. Some of us are a fair shot with should fired MG's. I'll grant you, bipods are rather handy for accurate very tight bursts.

Fully automatic rifles (non-belt fed) are best fired in bursts. With practice, one can lay very accurate fire. If one only has minimal training and practice, semi auto is definitely the way to go.

That's a pretty huge statement there. :scrutiny:

Do you think that an MP5 is not controllable on full-auto? How about a Thompson or an M16?

I won't argue the point about the M14, because I've never fired one, but I can control a G3 on full-auto pretty well.

Do you mean mini-14 or M14?

there is a huge difference. I would be more likely to believe that a Kansas Sheriffs dept. would have minis and not M-14s.

but hey what do I know.

M-14's. They got them from the Feds for free, only had to pay the shipping. Dept. traded in thier Mini 14's a few years ago.

I wish.....

From what I've seen of Kansas, eastern Colorado and the like an M14/M1a would be just about perfect for a patrol rifle. Being able to reach out 400, 600 yards, its a Good Thing.

And full-auto is fun for when the quals are over.

We have a relatively small department that patrols 1300 square miles of rural area. Meth labs are not uncommon, gang activity is present. If I were miles away from backup I'd want all the firepower I could get my hands on.
