Just getting in to loading belted magnum cases, and have heard of bulge problems above the belt. Larry Willis makes a die to remove the bulge, anyone had any experience with it? Also, any tips on reloading belted magnum cartridges appreciated (recommended dies etc). Using the Lee turret press, just hope it's stout enough.

Can't comment on the dies, but the turret press may be a bit iffy. I'd go with one of the "O" design presses. I mean, if you already have a turret press, by all means, give it a try and see; but I'd want something more robust for the long term. I don't think using a turret press gets you anything and if you're gonna be using a powder drop, all of that jostling will have you charges all over the place. If you're gonna be trickling the powder, the turret is useless.

Set your F/L die to bump the shoulder of your rifle's fired cases -.002"-.003" just like you would on a non belted case. This will help case stretching. Factory case shoulders are notorious for being up to .020" short. Use a good case lubricant like Imperial. You need to Know the measurement of the shoulders of your fired cases. A comparator can determine this, Hornady, Sinclair, Forster, Rcbs, etc.

I have the Willis die, but I haven't had the need to use it. Most of my belted magnum loading is for small volume hunting ammo.

I only use it for single stage, powder drop is mounted to the bench. It is handy to keep all your dies and manually twist when you go to the next one. I load 30-06 with no problems.

Same way I do my 30-06 loads, I have comparators and gauges. I also use imperical, and measure fired cases and bump back two thou. I've always heard about the bulge after two or three firings and was curious.

I have six reloads on my 300 WM brass with no problems chambering so far. I only bump the shoulder back enough that the round chambers reliably. I may be getting loose primer pockets on some now but will not be sure until I fire them again.

KY regular,
You may not need Larrys die but if you do it works as intended. I bought one a number of years ago I was new to reloading as well and called Larry and he was very helpful. I see he’s having some health issues and he’s been selling a lot of his stuff if you think you want one you might want to get it ordered.
