I recently acquired a Taurus Model 415 .41 magnum. I figure to use it as a sidearm when hunting (not a hunting handgun.) I replaced the ugly but undeniably effective 'Grippers' with some Brazilian hardwood grips fitted to my hand and designed for fast follow-up shots with heavy loads. They aslo give me the perfect reach on the trigger.
Figuring I should get used to it I decided to EDC it for a while. While it fits the holster for my 3" K-frame I thought it needed it's own and whipped one up. I also got two Five-Star billet aluminum speed loaders.
The new grips work well for distributing the recoil, and the extra-deep 'hook' at the top makes for faster follow-up shots, especially with magnum loads.
Shooting .41 Special loads are fine, though you definitely know you've fired a gun. Full-power .41 magnums aren't comfortable, but they aren't painful either, and can be placed accurately in a hurry... but you don't want to do it very many times!
The holster is the same style as my usual edc, with some minor improvements. The Taurus's loaded weight is only two oz. heavier than my S&W, and with the same style holster in the same location I really didn't notice a difference. The manual of Arms is of course identical, which is a plus. The larger grip is less obtrusive than I expected.
My EDC load is a .41 Special that spits a 170gr. SJHP at about 1000 fps. from this short barrel, which ought to do the job. Thinking about a 210gr. JSP at about 1150- 1200 fps. out of this gun ought to do for any four-legged critters that misbehave. Likely the worst I might run into is a Mountain Lion (which have been known to contest the ownership of a fresh-shot deer on occasion) or a Black Bear.
Liking this gun quite a bit. Need to run more bullets through it though. I gotta say, it's silly but there is a serious rush rapid-firing full-power loads from this gun. Leaves me grinning ear to ear. I'm such a child...
