I Took a Beautiful "Cougar" Home the Other Day.........

Luckily, it wasn't a large feline -- or the female human variety either... ;)

But she is rather pretty!

I used to have a nice T/C Hawken but sold it off when a shooter at the club made me one of those "can't refuse" offers. I wasn't shooting it much and figured I could always get another one, but after awhile I really wasn't fond of the shiny brass. I missed having a sidelock in my safe, so I recently I went on the hunt for a decent T/C Renegade in .50 cal, figuring the all-blue hardware would better appeal to me. But what I found instead was the "Cougar" version of T/C's Hawken -- the limited edition model from the late 80'/early 90's made with brushed stainless steel hardware (which looks like pewter) and a "drop dead gorgeous" piece of walnut burl that spoke to me saying "Take Me Home!"

So I did!!!

Best part was, no outlay of cash was needed, as I traded an old revolver that I wasn't shooting anymore.

Gosh I'm loving the wood on this one! And I like the "French Gray" color of the hardware too.

I added one of T/C's rare Hunting Tang Sights on the tang and removed the stock rear sight; now I just need to add some plug screws to the barrel and get a Treso Ampco Bronze nipple (which I use on all my blackpowder guns) and then I'll take her out to the range.

I sure hope she shoots as well as she looks!

Sir,

I dropped my jaw when I saw your rifle! That is an absolutely gorgeous piece of walnut, and the use of dull/grey stainless superb! When you shoot it, please don't mar it in any way. You have a fairly rare edition and, if it was mine, I would not shoot it, but it's yours. Congrats, sir!

Another comment, and I won't go any further with it so as to detract from your thread: I like your forum name and avatar. I took a photo for a contest on another forum ( I did not win!) which will show my similar alegiances:

Back to our regularly scheduled program!

Most excellent rifle! I love the metal maybe most of all. Congrats on your find and good deal!

What a gorgeous rifle! I love the pewter-y look of the metal. But that walnut stock is breathtaking. I've used a 50 caliber Renegade for almost 40 years and they are sweet shooters.

One suggestion. I have several guns that have outstanding grain in the stock. I use Renaissance Wax on them and all my black powder guns. It won't prevent dings, of course, but it sure protects the finish on wood and metal.

Jim, I love that gambling still life. When I did photography as a serious hobby I set up several shots of that nature. It's a lot of fun. Although I like the shape of the JD bottle, my version would have had George Dickle 12. :D

Staying with the thread (sort of). Photographing a beautiful BP piece like the Cougar or your 1870s gambling scene using only candle or lantern light, suitable for the time period it represents, might make an interesting image.

What an awesome Hawken! Not sure what I love about it more; the gorgeous walnut stock or the "French Gray" brushed stainless steel! Most definitely a looker that's for sure! Thanks for sharing!
