i assumed these are probably the only rifles they own, so they're just do it all rifles. the title of the thread starts with HOME DEFENSE / bug out. clearly, they don't know a lot about rifles. they aren't going to have 20 single purpose rifles like most people on this forum and they're not going to dedicate the time to proficiency. so they're not asking for a rifle optimized just for getting home versus one optimized for bugging out, vs one optimized for zombies or EMP vs a hurricane.
it doesn't friggin matter. "grab and go" could mean the glass in their back door breaking late at night.

they just want a couple high quality, light weight and easy to maintain rifles (cause they're not going to maintain them). given their likely level of knowledge, they probably consider a red dot "scoped".

if people wouldn't get so focused on the bug out scenario crap, a thread for "suggested general purpose rifles for a couple" that goes through the pros and cons of all the different styles and configurations would probably have made a good sticky, as i'm sure a lot of people have that same question

Agreed... Hence my earlier reply about a couple of the Henry offerings that would work well as do all rifles (read rifles as tools).

I hear those M&P 15 Sport2's are nice. Adjustable stock, picatiny rail, 1:9 twist 16" govt contour barrel. Priced not to break the bank, depending on where you're shopping. Scope it however you like. Get plenty of mags and 55gr FMJ and/or HP.

Leave plenty of room in the budget, as well as the ruck, for food and first aid and other considerations. Don't forget a tarp and a GI wool blanket and a frying pan... at some point, you gotta stop and make camp. I'm not talking SHTF/WROL/bug-out/bug-in/whatever... just a fact out on the trail.

$5K budget 2 rifles/carbines his and hers for general purpose “I need a long gun right now for “x” situation.”?

If I understand that correctly, and also understand your friend is asking for your help on this, I’m going to make an assumption about your friend and his wife. My assumption is that they are not “gun people” or otherwise experienced shooters. With that in mind here goes:

1.) Carbine: SIONICS Weapon Systems, Patrol Rifle Three or Patrol Rifle Three XL. Caliber: 5.56mm NATO. Upgrade the trigger and controls if you want to, figure $1400-$1575 for each unit depending on options.

You get a correctly assembled carbine with top quality parts that have all been tested to mil-spec for materials and various high pressure tests etc. SIONICS has been getting a good reputation for their barrels and bolt carrier groups. All barrels are radiograph inspected. All carbines ship with MagPul back up iron sights, the high end all steel versions to be exact.

Obviously 5.56mm NATO or .223 is probably the most plentiful and widely available centerfire rifle cartridge you will find in North America.

So there goes $2800-$3000 of the budget.

2.) Optic: Aimpoint Comp M5. Simple to use, bomb proof, batteries have a run time measured in years, and uses easy to find AAA batteries. Turn it on and leave it on. Sight in for 50 yards and confirm at 200 yards to make further adjustments. The 5.56mm NATO gives a nice coincidence zero at 50 yards and 200 yards. Will still take care of business out to 300 yards with decent ammo even with a red dot using that zero.

Mount with a Geissele Super Precision mount again for max durability.

All in optics and mounts, basically $1800.

I know they said scoped but if they have to ask for help then chances are running a magnified optic is not the best option for them.

3.) Use the remaining $200 on magazines.

4.) Bump them a bit and get a couple of decent scout lights if they really want to go that route.

5.) Slings are on them.

An old friend of mine asked me to put together a pair of rifles for him and his wife to just grab and go if the need ever arose. Requirements were easy ammo availability, light weight, scoped, reliable and easy to maintain. He has an all in budget of $5000. He does tend to like the nicer things in life. I thought I would seek the combined knowledge of you erudite THR folks. He did mention not having to rely on batteries. I have an idea of a package to recommend, I just wanted another set of brains to cogitate on this with me. What say you?
Grab and go where and why? Zombie apocalypse?..4 legged or 2 legged predators? Once all your MREs are gone, gotta hunt?

I'd say a high power, high capacity, reliable, light(might have to hike, gotta carry it) AR type plus a light, reliable, 22LR, maybe a shotgun too(?)...THEN, use the extra $ for all the other stuff you might need to essentially 'camp out' for an extended period. Meds, knife, axe, paracord, water purification stuff, extra clothes, radio, lights, etc, etc..list goes on and on...

Summed up nicely. We're not joining some militia that needs to assault an enemy compound or taking on 25 Ninjas wearing Kevlar. We're trying to; 1. Make any BG inside the house have a strong desire to be outside the house as quickly as possible. 2. Make any BG within 50-100 yards of us have a strong desire to add some zeros to that distance.

Which, in my mind, narrows things to if they prefer a semi-auto rifle, a bolt action, or a lever gun.

Semi-Auto Rifle? Ruger PC9. 9mm is extremely available and plenty effective with non-ball ammunition. Reliable and gives you plenty of options for a handgun that shares ammunition and even magazines. The Ruger will nicely mount a 1x Prism scope and has nice backup sights. Takedown, so you can stuff it in a backpack and look inconspicuous. Some people swear by the CZs. I have no experience with them. Could be a good option. There are others as well.

Bolt gun? 77/44 and 77/357 would give you handgun interchangeability. Something like a Ruger Scout is heavier, but more powerful. The CZ Mausers are lightweight and available in a variety of calibers. Yea bolt guns are not "optimal" for home defense, but if that's what they're most comfortable with I'd roll with it and use some of the money to have the guns smoothed-up if needed.

Lever gun? Well Marlin or Henry would be your main options. Probably in a .357 magnum so you can have ammo compatibility with handguns and shoot 38 Special if you want. The Henry's are an attractive option. The Big Boy X Model would be the one I would look at, but plenty of good Marlins are out and about. Have someone smooth up the guns as needed.

Optics? Probably a low power scope, preferably with an illuminated reticle. The Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 is what I'm thinking of, but with that budget they can get a higher-end equivalent. 6x is about the max you want with that size objective, due to how small the exit pupil gets at higher magnifications. 4x would be plenty serviceable. Red-dots have the battery issue, but if that is what they are used to I'd just make sure they have plenty of batteries on-hand.

There's my input.

Stop using logic! This is a gun forum, we don’t do that here!

In all seriousness this notion of bugging out is so stupid it beggars belief that some dimwits seriously entertain it. You hit the nail on the head.

Bug out to where? The woods or mountains or some other nebulous elsewhere? Things go south and off you go with your “bug out bag”.... LOL... go eat MRE’s in the woods until you run out of food, or get sick of getting rained on, eaten by bugs, etc. Meanwhile your house and all your stuff is sitting around unattended to potentially be pilfered. So when you give up on the MRE’s in “the woods” you can come home to your now vandalized, gutted, and picked clean house! Where you can be just as miserable as you were in “the woods” now that all your stuff is gone.

Maybe a better plan would be to go knock on your neighbors doors, and introduce yourself and make a bit of an effort to get to know them. Then if things go south you can all get together and make sure your area doesn’t get pilfered, vandalized etc until order is reestablished. Perhaps stock up on drinking water, and non perishable food. Along with basic meds, hand sanitizer, and combustible materials to cook with on a grill if needs be. You know, stuff you should already have on hand for bad weather, power outages etc.

I would just grab my scoped M70 .308 and my USFA .45 - then I would put leafed branched in my hat and call myself a “Wolverine” - too many movies, way too many movies.
