So I Think I Want A 10mm....

I wouldn't really want to carry a 1911 or 220 for a woods gun. I would want something lighter like the XDm or Glock for carrying. For range use I would want one of the heavier guns.

I've been casually looking for a 10mm that I can shoot more regularly than my Bren and I have to admit I've been awfully tempted by the P220 Legion and Hunter models, although they're both pretty heavy (the 10mm Legion has a stainless frame whereas I think all there Legion models are aluminum.)

Maybe it's not the best looking the but the Gen4 Glock 20 is probably the best do it all 10mm out there. I had a Kimber (yes...I know) Eclipse 10mm years ago and it was a paper weight, very unreliable and not that accurate, but I'm sure some other 10mm 1911's are, I just think Glock is a better platform for 10mm and more forgiving.

Carrying any heavy gun is all about the holster, belt, and in some cases suspenders you use.

I recommend anyone considering a field holster look closely at Diamond D Custom Leather, and specifically their Alaskan Hunter Holster with an added drop loop. I carry my P220s in the woods for several miles at a time on a regular basis and I find it very comfortable. Now I am only nearly 40, I work out, and I'm a largish guy. So those factors probably contribute to by ability to handle the weight.

Well, FWIW, my two cents’ worth is basically an ad for Glock. I recently purchased a Gen 4 G20 after carefully perusing the options, winnowing the field to three, the Sig P220, Springfield XDM, and the Glock. Shot all three, and liked all three. Ended up going with the Glock b/c of combo of reliability/simplicity, and cost. Second choice was the Sig, and close third the XDM. Really, though, not a bad choice in there. That all said, it seems I might be a bit more price-sensitive than some. My G20 shoots well, and though it’s literally a handful in my medium-sized hands, that helps keep the recoil from hotter loads from making things unpleasant. It has tolerated without a hiccup all sorts of ammo, up to and including the some of the very hot cartridges from Underwood and Buffalo Bore. It’s my hiking-in-bear-country sidearm, and I’m glad to have it.

UPDATE:

Well my decision was made for me. On a local buy/sell/trade website a Sig Tacops 10mm popped up. Like new, born on Nov 2018, 4 mags, 124 rounds of Sig 180gr V-Crown jhp. For $800. Couldnt pass it up.

I've been under the weather, so I only got to run 2 mags in the back yard. 1 mag each of Sig FMJ and V-Crown. (Only flavor my local store had)

It shot very smooth and no hiccups. Only thing was it didnt have the recoil I was expecting. My understanding is the Sig ammo isn't watered down. It is an all steel gun. Maybe I'm just used to all my aluminum and plastic 9mm's.

I am saving for a trip to silencer shop in a month. After that I will be placing an order to Underwood. I open to suggestions on other brands. I would like full power options.

Also in search of a leather OWB holster 1 with TLR-1 attached and 1 without. I understand the Tacops has a different slide profile than standard 1911s.

Edit: Thanks for the heads up on Diamond D...their pancake is exactly what I am looking for. Now OWB with TLR-1 is all I need.

It is a little bit in my testing. It was coming in between 1210 and 1225 FPS at the muzzle compared to the advertised 1250 FPS. It’s also not max potential for that cartridge.

Don’t get me wrong. 1200+ FPS for a 180 gr bullet is chugging along just fine, but it’s not what we typically refer to as nuclear loads.

Edit: Underwood in my experience is top notch. Doubletap has a good rep also, but I’ve seen consistent reports on forums and YouTube that they inflate their velocity claims a bit too. Not a lot, but a little. Federal also produces a 200 gr loading stoked with HET bullets. It’s supposed to hit like 1130 FPS. I have no direct experience with them, but my testing of other HST ammo indicates Federal is being honest about their velocities.

I love my Kimber custom II 1911 in 10mm. 1000 rounds through the gun and its given me absolutely no problem. The only thing about a 1911 in 10mm is that it's HEAVY.

Got a chance to put 100 rounds of Sig FMJ and 20 rounds of V-Crown. Had one failure to lock back, but could not reproduce.

There was a definite stronger hit on my steel targets. There is more recoil as well. Nothing unmanageable, just think I was too sick when I initially shot it to notice.

Overall this is a smooth shooting, well put together pistol. I didn't shoot for groups, but I was ringing steel out to 35ish yards. I think it's a keeper.

There's some evidence to support this...View attachment 892905
And that's one, out of how many 10mm 1911's Ruger has made? Doesn't come close to meaning they'll all do that, or even a significant number of them.

My EDC is a Ruger SR40C that I've had for 8-9 years. I also had a G20 since they were first released in 1992, so I've shot a lot of both calibers, and I reload for them both. I can tell you unequivocally the 10mm has a good deal more punch than the .40S&W, when the ammunition is properly chosen or loaded. And historically, it's why the FBI abandoned 10mm in favor of the .40 years ago.

10mm lost a lot of popularity after that, for quite a few years. It's coming back; it's always been a good caliber, always will be. The ballistics can get pretty close to a .41 Magnum in the right platform with the right loads. That's a lot of gun for a semiauto pistol. I recently sold my G20 and picked up a SR1911 in 10mm.

Oddly enough, the .40S&W is losing popularity, for whatever the reason. The guy at my LGS mentioned that Springfield was going to stop making the .40 in its pistol lines, sales have dropped on the caliber. When I asked why, I was told that 9mm has advanced over the years and is close enough to .40 that people prefer it, it's less "snappy" than a .40, so easier to manage, and less expensive to shoot. IDK, give it a few years and it will be back, too.

I haven’t been into 10mm in a while, but if I was to get back into it I’d do either a 1911 or smith 1006. Just plain fun, if you reload. The Dan Wesson offerings are nice.

I'm hoping it doesn't as just got mine repaired (bbl replaced) by Ruger. It is a tack driver, so I hope the barrel lug has no issues on this new bbl. Will take her to the range next week.

I have a Kimber Custom TLE II in 10mm and I love it. Installed ambidextrous safety (lefty here) and a Magwell. Very happy with looks and performance.

Nice catch man. I have that gun and its a work of art.

I have a Glock 20C which I consider to be a fat dog. My Springfield XDm has a much better trigger, even with the 20 having a trigger kit. I see that commercial 10mm has the widest range of power levels of about any pistol ammo. Expense of ammo is not a concern since I own the factory. I was considerably influenced by that video of an XDm10 firing 10K rounds without a malfunction, every shot on video. My XDm10 may be one of the first ones sold in the Denver area. I was looking for one when I saw the 10mm was released and ran out and bought the first one I could find. I am not the slightest bit disappointed. When new, the recoil spring seemed pretty stiff, but maybe that's just me getting old and feeble. I did apply some grippy sheet over the slide serrations and improved technique helps a lot. I have something like 1K handloads through it with no malfs.

Yes
And for a first one you should definitely get
Glock 20 a Glock 40 or a Springfield XDM.
You'll be happy if you get night sights but they're not totally necessary.
If you plan to hunt with it you might want to get the Springfield XDM 5 1/2 inch that has adjustable sights.

Unless you're into maintenance you might want to stay away from 1911's.
The Gocks and the Springfield XDM will be one hundred percent reliable.

I would avoid Sig at all costs their customer service is horrible horrible. And their products are not given good inspection.

There are very few reasons not to get the Glock 20 and you'll save yourself $1,500 if you buy a used one or $1,200 if you buy a new one and that's some serious cash.
