Another Big Hog

Awesome.

Wow, flipped to the web site and it announces that pig was killed in my county, Colorado County on the eastern side. I'm on the western side of the county, but not THAT far away. I see LOTS of pig here, but nothing THAT big.

Oh, never mind, says it was Liberty county. That's EAST of Houston. I'm well west of Houston. The boy lives in Fulshear. He didn't kill the pig there.

There are high fenced game ranches that buy hogs so people can come hunt them.

Hard for them to get to 400 lbs around here otherwise, lots and lots of little ones though. If the buyers would come get them, I’d give them to them when we trap them but the one in my area won’t.

Yeah, there's a high fenced ranch on the back road into Columbus. I know they do hog hunts. They had a booth at the Colorado County WMA meeting one year. But I'm 15 miles south of them, have PLENTY of hogs, and prefer eatin' size as I love 'em BBQued. That big one would be rank. Heck, why pay to hunt pigs when I can go 200 yards behind my house and shoot 'em? Heck, one year I shot a sow out of my back yard, had a feeder set up at the edge of the woods. original intent of the feeder was to attract the deer in the evening and morning so I could watch 'em out the back window. There was still some light left at dusk when I shot that pig, didn't need a spot lamp.

I'd set that feeder back up so I could shoot 'em off the back porch, but I don't want 'em in my garden. I have an electric fence around the garden. Keeps the hogs, deer, and escaped cows away. A neighbor had a hole in his fence for a while and cows kept eating my garden. One of 'ems carrying a pretty good load of number 6s.

Well, they don't get in the garden and that shocker puts out some juice. It certainly keeps my dog out. And, I had a cow's tracks run right up to it and turn around and run off. I'm guessing a pig wouldn't like it, either. Might not keep a deer out if they jumped it, don't know.

My wife's uncle does this for his garden and he told me he gets a dead rabbit now and then. It must pack a pretty good punch.

How so?

The "Boy killed the giant hog with one shot from an AR15" to me clearly strikes an effort to communicate just how "dangerous" these "high powered rifles" are. When, fact, it should have been noted what remarkable marksmanship the young fellow exhibited.

From what I know about the high fence places around here, I'd say you're right.

Impressive- yet so many people claim the 223/ 5.56 is to puny for hogs and deer.

I'd actually like to see some accurate statistics on that. I bet a large percentage of AR guys play games with 'em, three gun or some such. I would HOPE that hunting were significant at least. The things are WAY too accurate NOT to be used as hunting tools.
