AMMO

my local gun shop said they were sold out of 9mm ammo, and that this was the single biggest time of both ammo and gun sales they've ever seen...been in business for years... what's the deal? do people think that they're going to get robbed for toilet paper and hand sanitizer? Is it that they believe the market will crash, and full blown collapse? Or is it that they just don't have a gun and are buying for the first time? I don't know. I don't get it... and I really don't get the whole toilet paper thing... There have been plenty of times I've wiped with leaves, and we all were fine before toilet paper existed. It helps in no way with this virus... I'm confused...

I think it's a combination of first time gun buyers and people who don't keep much on hand panicking and buying more.

Realistically, I think most of those panic buying guns and ammo are either A) fearing a Without Rule of Law or Marshal Law kind of situation and buying for the first time, think New Orleans post-hurricane, or B) Worrying they won't be able to get more for awhile. No data or anything to support it, just kind of my personal read.

Don't know about you but trying to even get on certain sites like SGammo is difficult, they are being over loaded with traffic maybe.

As far as people asking why would someone hog paper or ammo?, one just needs to go to Ebay and see a roll being sold for $10 or more. Same thing happened during past ammo panics when the morning truck load at Walmart was listed on gun broker by that evening at 3 or 4 times the amount.

Panics are almost always political.

I have noticed since the first of 2020 certain brands of ammunition being out-of-stock. With the extreme anti-gun candidates running for office this year I suspect there is a “silent majority” of gun owners getting ready in case the Democrats win the White House.

Now we have a media that is committed to hyping and lying about the Coronavirus 19 and the economy to hurt Trump re-election chances.

We stopped at Dillons yesterday and it was crazy. We sat in our truck watching one lady chucking a cart full of toilet paper into her car and the shoppers checking out with cart full of T.P.

One would think that having folks buying guns and ammunition will hurt the Democrats.

I am smiling at myself a little for buying 1k of .223 two weeks ago but it is just part of rotating out my old Clinton era stash.
I stocked up 2 weeks also. Perfect timing! I received it a day or two longer than usual, but other than that I got in less than 5 days.
Target Sports USA has free shipping on 1,000 round case.

The 23rd st. Dillons down in Larryville had a pallet of TP available and cases of bottled water throughout the store. People were walking by both with no "panic" that I could see... o_O
Don't know what's going on at the only range/gun tore in town? :uhoh:

Yeah, ammo scare is on in my area. LGS had line that stretched over 50 customers long, most buying ammo. Geez. I keep plenty of ammo + reloading supplies enough for a couple years of regular range trips. I'll just sit back and watch, the lemmings never learn...

If that is the case it has to be being fueled by panic over the virus, not election year related. The only reason I can think of they would panic is fear the supply will be stopped for a while or the economy is going to crash.

If we were being told that a electromagnetic storm was heading this way and power would be off for months I could understand it but lol, people are funny.

Yeah, I'm thinking virus related for sure. Since I've got a pocket full of gun money from a rifle I sold I've been shopping around. It was normal here last weekend. I think it's fueled by people fearing societal break down. We have a world wide panic over something that amounts to a nasty cold.

Just remember, this is all the more reason to diversity. You can't own enough guns in enough different calibers. Just saying.

I'm not sure that i'm in the majority here, but I don't have thousands of rounds of .223 ammo stacked up. and i'm not an owner of an AR, but i have a couple 12 gauge shotguns, several rifles, and a pistol in a 40 s&w. I have enough ammo that it would take hundreds of people to enter my home before i would run out of ammo...i just don't get the whole fear of needing a semi auto AR in order to protect myself. I can reload quickly... have lots of guns, and I am a good shot.... can someone tell me why i need more? I have a freezer full of meat, which will last weeks without electricity if not opened regularly... why do people do this? why do people need to have thousands of ammo? are these people expecting to be part of a militia? or is it just for their families protection? if its the latter, i just don't get it...This is a real question. I will protect my family. I know that you all will too. I'm confused

If it gets to the point people need 3 months supply of toilet paper, chances are they won't have running water to flush with. Maybe the ammo is for use in robbing people of shovels?

I just picked a couple 100 rounds of 9mm-----mainly because I have a bunch of 9mm guns and no ammo other than the defensive loads already in the magazines-----I could have bought all I wanted or could afford but yes, things are picking up---a lot of guys buying cases of ammo and more people I've ever seen in that store at one time.

My bigger purchases lately have been a new knife and have been looking to get a new microwave oven----other than that I'm pretty well set on 5.56 and .22lr but have been for quite a while now since the last shortage was over.

The police departments of most large cities have publicly stated that they will not be responding to calls about "petty" crimes for the duration of this outbreak. The ones that aren't saying it are probably doing it. Sound like normal law and order to you? Sounds to me like it might be time to keep one in the pipe and a full magazine. Oh, you are short on firearms, magazines and ammo? To the store!

This may also simply be the precipitating the usual pre-election run.

Seriously? The idea is to be able to shoot when you want to. Not have a safe full of guns that you can't shoot because of the "panic buying" when it seems all everybody wants is what you need, and the price just doubled.

Ok. I get that. I don't shoot a lot. I shoot to keep my guns in scope, or to make sure I'm accurate. I shoot to kill, and I hunt. I know, again, that I'm in the minority, but as gun owner, who loves to hunt, and has firearms to protect his family, I'm just not sure i understand the scare, or the need for thousands of ammo. just saying. if you shoot thousands of ammo monthly, ok, most don't, but a good deal is a good deal. I get that. that is not what's happening, and is not what I'm speaking about. i want to know why people right now think they need thousands of rounds... 100 will protect you, IMO

If you're happy with the firearms and the ammo stock you have, excellent.

Is your issue with AR? If so, OK, you can do that. It's America. I'm leaving that one largely alone other than to state I personally have one because it's a nice, light, reliable, low-recoil, versatile centerfire carbine for which parts, mags, ammo, optics, etc, are readily available. I'm not really a rifle guy, but it's a fairly simple beast. I can do most work any work on it that I might I need to or want to. With mine, I plink.
I have no "fear of needing a semi auto AR" ... I just happen to own one and do enjoy shooting it. I could certainly use it as a defensive weapon if I chose to, but I don't see that arising.

As to "why do people need to have thousands of ammo?" -- some of us, I think, shoot more than you do.

Personally, I own guns in several calibers/gauges and most often shoot 22s, 9s and shotguns (.410 through 12 at recreational skeet and clays, plus upland bird hunting). On vacation a week ago, I probably went through 400 rounds of .22LR, 500 rounds of 9 and a flat (250 rounds) of 20 gauge (skeet and clays). And I was just farting around...not really working on anything, just having fun.

Others shoot matches (such as steel, bowling pins, IDPA, rimfire, etc) and they practice/train for them. Or they may like to take classes. A lot of the handgun ones that last even 2 days tell you to bring 400 rounds, minimum.

Re another "why," we've learned that if we hit stretch like this one or the 2012-13 scare and we're waiting to get ammo until the day we need it, we're pooched. And buying ammo when the prices are good is a hedge against, well, times like these.

Other than handling our firearms safely and responsibly, we need not all have the same shooting habits, preferences and volume. We need not be all alike.

There's also this reason re both the AR and the ammo: Because we want to and because we can.

Some of us are vets and 100 rounds isn't even a combat load. We are use to lugging around 2-3 times that daily. I personally stock up since I do like to shoot a lot and I am NOT going to get caught like the last drought.

and also, maybe our hobby can wait a month or two....people are dying...why are you worried about shooting right now. prices will go to normal...when people stop getting sick and dying... just saying

again, you've missed my point.. im not against an AR... I'll probably buy one soon. I think I'll do an AR 10, so I can hunt with it, but I see the benefits too. that's not my point. I just am asking... people are buying out ammo, buying guns like crazy, and I don't get it. Unless hundreds of people want to enter my home, im pretty confident in my semi auto 12 ga, puma 12 ga, 270, 30/06, 300 win mag, 40 S&W. Im good. I have lots of ammo, not thousands, but really maybe more than i think, but this is bigger than that. Im confident, you are too, my question is: why are people going crazy who already own guns and ammo?

Of course people are dying ... but it's not in the numbers from auto accidents or even influenza. The big preventive measure is avoiding large gatherings. So, what's a better hobby than going to the woods, the farm, or the not-huge club and getting some rounds in?
With all due respect to the measures such as closures and limits on gathering numbers, which I actually agree with and happily abide with given what I know of this virus, what would I be helping by not shooting?
I don't follow.
Would I be doing society better if I stopped fishing, too?

why do confident gun owners feel the need to stock up more, if not for a war? we will not be able to fight like we did 200 years ago. we own guns for fun, to hunt, and to protect our families...

As to why people are "buying guns like crazy," I doubt we here are those people. We had/have the guns, we have our own ammo.
I also think you're a tad hung up on "thousands." Four flats of shotgun shells is 1,000. I can kill four flats in a month, easy ... and I'm a rec shooter, not a competitor.
Two bricks of .22LR is 1,000. I own a half-dozen .22LRs. Why wouldn't I keep 5,000 or 6,000 rounds on hand?
A half-case of 9mm rounds is 500. I shot one of 'em last week. Why wouldn't I keep at least a few thousand rounds on hand for my 9s?
I have to admit, sir, you puzzle me.
