So lately ive been working on an ar build. I have a lower from Mag Tactical (ts magnesium alloy) and i was planning on building a decent but low budget ar 15, if anything, to get familiar with the platform, companies and style. My local mom and pop gun shop sells an anderson lower parts kit and i was wondering if anderson is any kind of reputable or not. If not, was are some reputable companies?

For a budget build, Anderson will suffice. PSA and Del-Ton would also be good. Spike's would as well, albeit more expensive. The only "budget" LPK I have ever had a problem with was a no-name kit off eBay, which, given their current anti-black-rifle stance, will give you an idea how long THAT has been.

Google Unbranded ar parts.

They have pretty good deals on parts and kits for a great deal. Their ELG triggers are pretty decent

PSA is my main place for LPK’s and lowers, but also use Aero uppers and lowers. Ballistic Advantage has very accurate barrels at great prices.

My last Anderson LPK had a strange looking chrome hammer without the rear hook. I think it was MIM and they are saving on materials, but I think I would prefer the higher mass of the older style. I used it for my 458 SOCOM build and it works fine.

Faxon is where I’m going for my next barrel. I think their price/quality ratio is hard to beat.

The barrel and the bolt carrier group are where you want to spend your money.

That being said, a few friends have purchased the 18" PSA uppers with the stainless barrels and they shoot really well for the money spent, sub MOA with their reloads.

In the past I have used Daniel Defense and DPMS parts groups but DD has jumped in price and DPMS is no longer. Recently I have heard good things about Aero's kits, which don't include a trigger group. This is preferred as I like the Larue MBT trigger.

I don't like to go super cheap on stocks and grips as I find that just makes the gun less fun to shoot. Magpul MOE parts are pretty reasonable, and worth the little extra money spent.

another vote for PSA for parts. I've also had good luck roaming through the websites of Numrich and Joe Bob's at various times finding decent deals.

These would be my go to places. I'm not sure you can get an MOA guaranteed barrel any cheaper than Ballistic Advantage.
Recently used a BA 18” nitride barrel in my AR 308, and it shoots under 1” with budget PPU 150gr soft point. Haven’t reloaded for it yet, but I’m expecting excellent results.

“Low budget” is a hard term to define in the world of rifles. I am fully aware that a month ago I could have purchased a complete Anderson upper and complete lower for $320. In that same time frame I assembled (actually my daughter did) a $710 “budget” rifle. More than a few guys I know and plenty I don’t know would tell you a $900 Colt is what they consider budget class and I think all of us are correct.

After a few builds under my belt I much prefer an “oops” kit with individual controls from the likes of Phase 5, Battle Arms, and Strike Industries. They look, feel, and function great for not much more than a full LPK.

If I’m spending upwards of $300-$400 on a rifle it may as well be accurate which means buying a better barrel than some $45 iffy and splurging for Melonite for barrel, gas tube, and bolt. Beyond offering a longer service life the benefit of less cleaning and care plus corrosion resistance makes it money well spent.

Again perception of the term “budget” is key. Despite splurging on dinners out, flowers, and gifts, my wife was far cheaper when we were just dating. Likewise building the rifle you want now will cost less than replacing the one you never wanted.

To answer the original question, yes, Anderson is a reputable company. I have 4 rifles based on their lower receivers and several more with Anderson parts.

When I hear “build kit” I tend to think all budget parts that got cobbled together and sold unless the vendor makes most of the major components like PSA. I still prefer to choose my own parts so I know what I’m getting.

Several Anderson builds in there.
