Hello. Does anyone know if it's legal to lend a gun to a friend (non felon) in NC for the purpose of self defense?

Is it legal to sell private party to private party in NC, without a background check? If not, I'd assume lending a gun isn't legal either. "National crisis" or not.

Most laws about such things deal with possession, not ownership. Lending would be a change of possession, so if your state requires a background check for a private sale that would also apply to lending.

There are a few aspects to consider.
First, are you referring to a long gun or a hand gun?
Second, are both of you in North Carolina?
Third, does NC have any laws concerning transfer of firearms (as differentiated from sales).
Fourth, Has NC fallen into the Universal Background Check (UBC) world?

I'll let those more knowledgeable on NC laws to continue this thought.

@JERRY and @Dibbs, I don’t disagree with your thinking and I’ll admit a large part of me feels the way you do. But I also recognize that this is a chance to win someone over. Loan them the gun (if legal) and show them how to use it. You will probably end up with a convert; someone who might think twice the next time they hear a politician they like talk about how great gun control is.
