I assume with all the panic buying that the system for getting the federal OK to let someone purchase a firearm is slowing down.

I have a gun coming in to a local gun store. If for some strange reason the system was backed up and they could not get through for an OK do they just hold the gun until they get hold of someone?

That seems to make sense, but on the other hand I do not know how the law works with this.

Pretty much. It depends on if NICS is just slow or completely down. They’ll have you fill out the 4473 and then if the system is slow you could just be waiting in the store for a while. If the system is down they’ll probably have you come back in a few days.

In general, they can’t transfer the gun to you without completing the background check (with exceptions for things like some state CCW permits allow you to bypass the check, etc).

I thought ( I could be totally mistaken ) that if a NICS check doesn't come back Proceed or Denied in a set time period (5 days?) that they are allowed to proceed?

You are correct as far as federal law is concerned. State law may vary, but in Ohio, so far, they're adhering to that law. If a delay is required, the seller then uses their own discretion and is perfectly ok to proceed. Though my friend did get a call 2 days after the 5 day wait declining the transaction. He simply told them they were 2 days late, the guy already took possession of the gun. Niether of us heard how that ended...

I was at my LGS today and there was a guy finally picking up his pistol after the background check came through 6 days after he applied. After 7 days he would have had to reapply. Mine has always took 15 minutes or less and today it took a full hour and a half.

Is there panic buying going on?
Not that I've seen around these parts, and I was in 5 different gun stores between last Friday and yesterday (Tuesday). I ordered myself a new Smith 638 at the last one I was in. They said they'd have it in 3 or 4 days. So I guess we'll see come next Monday - I hope all the "panic buying" that's apparently going on elsewhere doesn't slow the shipping of my new gun.:uhoh:
Anyway, back on topic - even though no concealed carry license/permit is required for legal concealed carry in Idaho, one good reason for having one is that the background check is waved when you purchase a gun from an FFL dealer. I've heard that it's the same way in some other states too.:)

Around here, basically everything they can deem non essential is being ordered to close. Today was barbershops/salons... yesterday was gyms, fitness centers, bowling alleys and theaters. I have a bad feeling that sporting good stores and gun shops will be in the near future. Grocery stores, pharmacy, and gas stations are on the "exempt list" currently. Guess Walmart is better at preventing the spread of germs than a barber...

I picked up a pistol last Friday and it went through in two minutes. I’m sure it’s maybe a bit worse this week.

Very weird situation for me last Saturday. I had been price shopping for a certain pistol and an AR lower.

Went in and they were getting overrun by customers.

Salesman said the background checks were taking a while and told him I expected it to be longer than normal .

It took about 2 to 3 minutes to get approval back. Much quicker than normal so beats me!

Scheels uses an electronic form on a laptop and transmits your 4473 that way. It is all done in an instant. Then Scheels prints the 4473.
My gun purchases of late took no more than 10 seconds for approval after the electronic for was submitted.

Are you kidding? What is troublesome is the number of people who are coming into a LGS with only a clean record and a credit card, and NO KNOWLEDGE of what a gun is or how it works. 'Just in case'....not gonna be like Walking Dead..pretty sure. I went to Cabela's the other day and there were so many waiting at the gun counter Cabela's brought out folding chairs do people(lots) would be more comfy.. coronavirus-gun-sales.jpg

My local Sportsman Warehouse is out of 9mm, .45 ACP, 5.56. So yes, panic buying is here. Low end handguns, under $400, were also gone.

AIM Surplus first set rules about sanitizing your hands when you came in, keeping your distance, etc. Their latest is, as of today, they have totally suspended in person counter sales.

Their website indicates they are out of all popular calibers. However, when they ran out, they were still at their regular excellent prices, no gouging, unlike you know who.

Transmits the 4473?

Really? There's no where to transmit it to.

:what: I'm soooooooooo glad I already have the guns 'n' ammo I need!!!!!! :neener:
Me too, but I learned a long time ago that "need" and "want" are two different things when it comes to me and guns. And if I'm still around when this thing is over, there's not a doubt in my mind I'll being accumulating or changing out a few more guns before my time on Earth is up.;)
