It may be time to thin the collection

So there is a panic buy on guns, no surprise, gun stores are selling out and unable to restock as distributors are sold out also.

What is surprising is who the buyers are. It's not us, most of us were well stocked long ago. Its first time gun buyers, people who may have been gun control advocates a month ago, or at least neutral on the matter. And every day they find less and less to buy. And no ammo to go with it.

I am starting to think that some of us should release some of our less loved guns back to the market, first off this is the peak of the market if you have something you dont really use clogging up your safe you will get top dollar, second as these new gun owners learn train and become aware of how gun laws work many will become our allies against future gun control.

Weather consignment at your local shop or private sale if legal in your location I think now is the time to sell that gives us a great advantage.

Your Thoughts?

I sold an AR during the last shortage. I just sold 10 guns on Gunbroker. They were guns that I either bought as investments or that I didn't shoot as much as I thought I would. After the shortage is over I'll buy one or two that I will shoot.

No gouging was involved. The AR guy came to me and I told him more than a few times that it was a bad time to buy. After the deal was made I gave him 100 rounds of ammo, as none was available. I made money but he got a fair price for the time. The others were all bid on, starting at 99cents!

Yep this is the time, good win-win situation

Looks like those economy AR's may have been a decent investment after all. The ammo for it more so though. Doesn't appear to be any of it for sale anymore.

Make a couple bucks sure, but do not gouge, this is the next generation of gun owners we could be introducing to gun culture, and our new allies in the next gun control fight.

Great point.

Couple of things that come to mind....

1) There may be firearms that will exchange hands (neighbor-to-neighbor, relative-to-relative) that will not go thru the NICS check system. Some of these new gun owners may have mental-drug-criminal backgrounds that could surface years from now. To some extent this happens now, but when mass hysteria gets mixed in it'll be more so. If they do fall into the wrong hands, the news headlines and politicians will come after the law abiding owners first.

2) Reminded of the lending of firearms to the British during WWII for their protection, much of which was destroyed and banned later. Don't mind helping a person in need protect themselves, would hate to see that gun turned in as a buy back program for a gift card.

I know what I own today already. Tomorrow is always an iffy proposition so I will hold on to a sure thing. A single shot .22 rifle and a couple hundred rounds might be a lifesaver for a family if future things go south. Then is the time to help those that will benefit the most. YMMV

Lead on brother. Lead on.

In the meantime I’ll watch from the sidelines.

I've got more than enough to last through a few panics, but I did consign a Glock 43 and a Zastava 77 at work. I was a bit surprised at what the boss put on them, but I was very happy when both sold the first day out. City-dwellers are buying absolutely ANYTHING that will go BANG. Kinda sad in a way, especially when they will still vote for Bernie or Biden anyway. Maybe a few will begin to think a bit better.
Got a few more that I could part with, but......nah.

It might get bad enough that your guns and ammo will be worth their weight in gold.
This will be a barter economy.
I am keeping everything.

I dont think it will get that bad, this will certainly be bad for the victims of the virus, but I assume society will restart afterwards, changed, but functional, it's what we all want and will work for.

But predicting the future is notoriously dificult. So my guess is no better than yours.

Funny thing I’ve noted....Armslist sellers started the increase in prices last week and now it’s bargain city, because we are under a “stay at home ‘order’”. I’ve seen a few that I’d really like, but I have no interest in meeting new friends right now.

Price gouging is part of capitalism. Those who do, while it seems unfair, do what is needed to bring product to market. It also encourages others to join the market. As others join the market with product the price is unsustainable at the gouging level and prices return to normal. Those who feel the price is too high should not buy. No buyers also means that prices some down. As for me, I am not going to sell what I have. If I have family that needs something, I am going to assist them as needed.

In the last year and a half I’ve already been downsizing by trading away guns I don’t care about at all anymore for higher quality ones I don’t have the cash to buy. It’s been good as I enjoy my collection more now and have spent minimal money doing it.

Yes, this is a good time to sell some so long as you are doing it at reasonable prices and not gouging.

If it’s a new owner, it’s also a good opportunity to share a little ammo if you can and offer to show them a thing or two, assuming quarantine rules in your area don’t prohibit that.

I've always looked at guns as worth their weight in gold, even in good times. I don't think we're near SHTF times but it's definitely uncertain times so I'm not selling anything.
