Lefties Unite!

I'm not a lefty and don't want to be. According to my research, lefties make up about 11% of the population. Regarding weapon use in the military, here are my observations:
1- The military doesn't issue weapons for lefties. However, the M9 pistol has ambi safety/decock, and the mag release is reversible. The M110 SWS has ambi controls as well. Not sure about the new Sig pistol, I retired before it was adopted. The Glocks in SOCOM are gen 3, so no reversible mag release. The standard Mossbeg 590 shotgun with its tang safety works well for lefties, though.
2- The Gustav 84 MM recoiless and similar weapons cannot be employed left handed, as the optic is mounted at the 9 o'clock position.
3- Lefties need to hold (and throw) grenades upside-down so that the pin can be safely removed with the right hand. Seeing this scares the crap out of me and looks unsafe as heck, but it is how it needs to be done.
4- The US military does not (but should) provide ambi safety/selector on the M16/M4 family of weapons. In my unit, they were installed on the M4 for lefties, contrary to regulations. The absence of ambi switches on these firearms place lefties at a considerable disadvantage in terms of speed, compared to the other 89%. The standard front sling swivel that comes on the M4 is set for a righty, and must be reversed (requires hammer and punches) for a lefty. In my unit, there were removed and replaced with QD rail-mounted swivels, so we didn't have that problem.
5- Lefties tended to be "awkward", though still effective with practice, when using the M24/M40/Mk13 (Remington 700 based) sniper rifles, as well as other bolt action rifles.
6- Lefties often get screwed by supply because when it is time to order new holsters, supply forgets to get some in lefty.

Thanks for your in depth explanation!!

Seem like Fl-NC has never heard of the 1873 Colt revolver. It's actually a left handed handgun that was foisted off on the right handed world.

No, that was a little before my time. I have shot a blackhawk. Is that designed to be lefty too?

Very interesting subject, my son is right handed, same eyes vision level.
However, he shoots better revolvers with the left hand.

Yep. Both of those require a right handed person to transfer the handgun to the left hand to load/reload. Then transfer it back to the right to shoot. Lefties just keep it in their dominant hand for those tasks.

Some of my favorites have been:

Remington 700LH CDL and BDL - discontinued
Winchester M70 LH - discontinued
Browning A-bolt LH- discontinued (but the Xbolt has LH models)
CZ 452LH - discontinued
DPMS Southpaw - discontinued

You can see where this is going. If you find one you like, you better buy it.

Honorable mentions:
AR-15 (with ambi selector and slick sided to actually use an ambi CH instead of getting caught up with the FA)
FAL
Lever actions
TC Contender/Encore

I am left handed but have learned to shoot both ways. Of course I’m left side dominate but I can shoot just as well fight handed. I do practice that at the range.
In my collection I only own one left handed bolt rifle and that is a Remington 700 BBL in 7mm mag. Bought hat many years ago to retire an old Winchester I was using for hunting....never retired the Winchester so the Remington has never been used!

I’m like several of you I guess. I’m left handed but shoot and throw right handed. I have learned to shoot left handed on rifles now since my right eye has retina and glacumo problems . It’s getting better but not enough to shoot. So I have learned to shoot rifles left handed pistols right but use my left eye. Have been shooting very well happy so far. BTW oldest son is right handed but shoots left we’re both screwed up
