For youse guys around here. Up above Lyons, about a mile from the intersection of Hwy 7 and Hwy 72(Peak to Peak, Off Peak to Peak hwy)..in Roosevelt National Forest, but controlled by Boulder County Sheriff and USFS. It's open..uncontrolled outdoor shooting range. Use is 'discouraged' but for info..

I went to a Forest Service informational meeting in Ft Collins a few years ago and they were pushing a program that would let them shut down open shooting in the National Forests in exchange for defined shooting areas. Maybe that one is a result of that action as the folks I spoke with seemed to think that Boulder County was pushing it. I know that Larimer County rejected the idea at the straw poll they took that night. I will have a look next time I go by either in my work van or my motorcycle. Highway 7 is finally a pretty nice ride since they resurfaced it.

On the way down on Hwy 7, just outside Lyons, there is an old quarry that they have been making noises about to make a more defined(and controlled??) outdoor range altho I doubt they have the $ to actually run and maintain it. I think Boulder County isn't thrilled with the range off Peak to Peak..it's getting pretty 'dirty'..brass all over and often trash/cans, etc from people who would scream the loudest if it were closed. PLUS many choose to continue to shoot at trees..really dumb as Boulder County or USFS could close this in an instant.

As an update, now closed by USFS due to low USFS and Boulder County Sheriff manning..calling it a 'fire ban' but really a COVID-19 ban..

We use to shoot a lot in national forest off of Mt Herman road near Monument CO before the USFS shut down shooting in that area in 2014. The amount of trash that people left in these shooting areas was disgusting. Targets, target stands, old wood pallets, cans, bottles, even old TVs and computer screens. Anything people thought would be fun to shoot they would bring and then leave in the woods. As the USFS looks to shut down more and more areas to shooting it is important that people shooting are respectful of others who use national forest lands and clean up the areas they shoot in.

No doubt about it but this place, every time me and my sons have gone up there, is packed with trash. We always take garbage bags and clean up what we use(ammo boxes, old boxes, etc) but there's always tons of broken bottles, cans, empty propane tanks, various junk, Bud Light cardboard cases, empty paint cans(bring up a '30', drink beer, then paint and hoot cans..disgusting)..some of these yahoos don't understand how easy it is for the County Sheriff/USFS people to close these areas..
