Look what the Tooth Fairy just brought me. I mean the steel fairy. I mean the steel God, yeah that's what I mean... 20200404_162519.jpg

No , I dont heat treat the steel myself , although I have in the past when I was using simple carbon steel like 1084. These modern "super steels"are too complex. I usually send my blades to Peters' Heat Treating. With the current situation , I'm looking into other options.

I was thinking that Nitro V had some weird treatment requirements even by "super steel" standards. I guess if you want that kind of performance, it makes sense to have a specialist handle that end of the deal. Even with the simple steels, having the option to have the heat treat done elsewhere really opens up the option for folks who want to get into knifemaking.

HI Jim,

Nitro-V sounds promising. The heat treatment of that steel is not hard to do. I would make a deal with someone in your area who has a kiln. May be you could trade a 6 pack of toilet paper in exchange for them heating your blades to 1950 deg. for 15 mins. Then you can plate quench them, toss them in to a cooler with a dry ice alcohol brine. The next day temper them. I find learning new skills and doing things myself more rewarding then paying other people. Here are two links you may find helpful.
