Hey all, I’ve been thinking about buying my first AR. I’m not too sure if I can just buy the ones I’ve been looking at, especially in New York I don’t know too much about the AR requirements and laws. Anyone have a good knowledge of this? I was looking at a couple reliable starter ones such as the Ruger AR-15 and the S&W M&P Sport. I don’t live in New York City if that matters which I think it does.

Why not go to a gun store and see what ARs they have available? It should give you a decent idea what you can have (although you should be prepared to be disappointed given your location - even outside NYC).

^This exactly

There is a lot of restrictions you will have to watch out for like maximum 10 round mags, as well as the NY SAFE ACT. Which you may want to read up about as it can possibly narrow down your selection options even more. My brother still lives in NY and complains all the time since he has several rifles that were grandfathered in, but everything he wants to buy now is considered illegal. It makes him jealous that I can even easily go rent a full auto at the range here if i choose too.

You cannot have a new, standard AR in NY. You should go to the NYSPRA site and google the NYS SAFE act pages. If the gun is not grandfathered, you have two choices:

1. Something that looks like a standard AR but with a fixed mag that you load through the ejection port with a weird speed loader. Not the fastest.
2. An AR but with a weird stock - there are several options that get rid of the pistol grip and no flash suppressor - just a plain barrel. However, you have the ability to use standard AR 10 round mags. So standard reloads.

Here are some options and info. Never shot these guns, so no idea if they work:

Some local outfits will make a compliant gun from Rugers, or SW M&Ps for less. You should look at one, see if you can rent one to see if it appeals to you.

Another option is get a Ruger Mini-14. If it is plain jane - it is compliant. Don't get a 'tati-cool' one that is jazzed up to look EBR. Finally, if you want to move out of 223, Ruger PCC 9mm carbines are popular but without the threaded barrel. Again, don't turn it into a EBR, keep it looking like a rifle.

Now in a alternate universe (rant on), SCOTUS will get off their legal weeds butt and take a case in real time that voids the state bans. That won't happen though, IMHO. They will deal with other agendas but not guns in a manner satisfactory to us. Could be wrong, but that's my view.

Here is my Handy Dandy what can you have in NY picture I have to post every once in a while from Thordsen Customs:

Basically what it all means is if you have a pinned magazine, meaning it’s not “removable” from the gun, you can have whatever you want on your gun because it doesn’t have the evil “Removable Magazine!!”

If you don’t pin the mag... well you can’t have any thing listed above. Make sure you pay attention to six because that’s were they get you. With a removable magazine you cannot have annnny muzzle device. You can’t even have threads on the muzzle.

But ....thats not fair, the criminals can have it all!

I think to move to Florida, which I did from Canada in 2004. Your best bet! The weather is better, the politics are better. A Glock 19 sits behind me, on my bedside table, loaded with 16 rounds of Federal 147g HST! Legal.
You will have a problem doing that just now, the Cops are turning the New York plated cars around on the I 95 I believe?

I am from PA. I visited a couple of guns shops in the southern tier of NY because it is what I do for leisure when traveling. The guy at the counter at one store was very friendly and explained to me requirements of the "Safe Act" posted above in this thread. He handed me an AR and I was able to see a legal NY version. Neither her nor some of the other guys at the counter were very happy with the way things are in the state. We also talked handguns and waiting periods as well.

Can you own a Mossberg 940 JM pro in nY?

CZ Scorpion?
What about an AR pistol? It specifically says ''rifle'' above.

That's my next choice for defensive long arms, I guess.

I believe NYS has a weight limit on handguns that you are allowed to own. It has been some time since I lived there, but that option might be scratched out of the gate due to weight. I also believe that handguns face the same restrictions as rifles in terms of "evil" features.

You can have a extended tube 25 shell capacity shotgun as long as the “Magazine” is not removable.

CZ scorpion rifle is a no go unless you pin the magazine in. The pistol versions are still a no go because of weight

AR pistols are a weird exception. The way you get around the weight issue is just put the lower on your pistol permit so it passes weight. But you can never change the caliber after. Because it’s be considered a “handgun” your exempt from the “assault rifle” clause buuut then it’s registered on your pistol permit which defeats the purpose of not having to register it with the state.

Here's my ny ar, built fairly cheap,
Areo receiver
S&w m&p quad rail given to me by <*(((><.
Bca 16" 223W ss heavy barrel
Cheap steel has block and ss gas tube
Stranded m16 bcg

Anderson lower,
Cmmg parts kit.
Cheap buffer tube, spring and buffer from delta team tac.
Thordon frs-ii stock, there on sale for $50 in green.

Aluminum flip up backup sights and Burris ff3 red dot, given to me by loonwulf

It's not pretty and looks all miss matched but shoots very good, and the stock is quite comfortable. Kinda has a futuristic shtf look to it.

Here is a warning. I've already commented on folks saying to move and just deleted a very offensive post. If you cannot contribute to the actual issue of the gun parameters and the legal issues - DON'T. You will be infracted.

There are strong RKBA movements in states that have terrible bans. The organizations there file suit and work for the 2nd Amend. Posts like this are virtue posturing and trying to be cute. They are not.

I see that there are a lot of requirements. I’ve shot a lot of AR’s and have always wanted one but I’ve always pushed it back because I didn’t really wanna go through the trouble with getting one here. As someone stated above I think the best bet is to see what they have in stores. I guess I can eliminate getting a “normal” one for now because that’s impossible here in New York

Also how does the mini 14 stack up against an AR? To me it seems like the mini 14 looks more like a rifle than I don’t know an “assault” weapon? They have virtually the same characteristics yet one is impossible to come by here.

The rugers good, it's just hard paying $900 when you can build 2 ar-15s for.

I might take up the project of building one. After all nothing else to do at the moment. I just feel like I would mess it up and order a part that’s not legal here because I’m not the brightest in this department. I’m mainly hunting and bolts
