What is the best all around rifle caliber!!!

My choice would be the .308 Winchester. Adequate for north American game and can shoot NATO ammo in a pinch.

Please can we make this "the perfect all around caliber, but mainly about bears" thread?

Because while there is no such creature, objectively, and subjectively it's just a list of cartridges, we haven't had a bear thread I several days, so that would make it more interesting.

And the answer is 375 Ruger. Because otherwise it's silly but will kill really big bears.

Or we could go to the hunting section which covers these topics in a gazillion threads. :D

Now, that being said we all know the only REAL rifle cartridge worth having is the .270 Winchester. Jack O'Connor said so and that is good enough for me. Unless I'm hunting with my 7 mag. Or 30-06. Or 6.5 Creedmoor. Or AR-15. Or levergun in 45 Colt. :)

I get the ".308 because I can shoot NATO 7.62x51" thinking. As a reloader, one of the reasons I like 7mm-08 is that I can form cases from .308 brass. Same would be true for .260 Remington and .243 Winchester. I'll stick with 7mm-08 as my "only one" vote.

Funny how many .308's and .243's and 6.5 CM's I've gone through, and yet there has always been at least one 7mm-08 in my safe, and likely always will be. If someone told me I could only have three rifles, it would be my 7mm-08, my Howa mini 7.62x39 and my beloved pre-64 Win 30-30 - the last two overlapping but you know - sentimental value and all...
