I bought my Glock 19 gen 4 in like new condition in late December. I Got a deal on it because I also paid for a concealed weapons class. I started carrying in January once I received my permit in the mail. The Glock has been a great gun, and I shoot it almost every weekend. My only concern is that the finish seems to be a bit weak. My gun was pristine the day I got it, and now it has a bit of holster wear from carrying it on my side everyday.

So I have 2 questions:
1. Is it normal to have this type of wear after only carrying for 4 months?
2. Will the areas that have the finish rubbed away be susceptible to rust?

I use CLP to clean my guns and I am worried that this might have ruined the finish. The look of the wear does not really bother me. I just want to make sure I didn't do something to cause this. I have attached a few pics of the wear, as well as the holster I use.

Thank you for your time.

I got my G4 G19 in April or May 2013, and it was my EDC until about August 2017. It started showing holster wear in about 3-4 months as well. The most notable wear point was on the extractor, where it rubbed in the holster. To this day, it has not rusted. I have a sample size of 1, so I can't say whether it's "normal," but mine's doing just fine. And I went to a Glock Days event about 4-6 months ago and had an armorer look it over. I wouldn't worry about it.

Glock changed the finish on the Gen4 guns. The new finish had a problem with wearing. Holster wear is very common on the Gen4.
As long as you keep it clean and wiped off , rust will not be a problem.
Glock did change their finish again when the Gen5’s came out.

Very typical for a Gen 4, though that one hot spot on your slide could be reduced a bit perhaps by some grinding and polishing your holster if you could find where it is rubbing. For a Glock I wouldn't worry.

Heck my Sig Legion and Wilson EDC X9 looked worse before 3 months of carry, it'll happen to any gun that spends significant time in a holster.

Or for the Kimpro Kimber finish, for guns that never see holster time.

Honest wear looks good to me, and Glocks metal is treated so it won't rust any worse anyway, though a nightly wipedown is a good idea for any carry gun, IMO.

Yes

No. (probably)

Glock's metal treatment includes the surface of the metal, even if the "black" rubs off from holster wear.

The finish on my G19 gen 4 was horrible after about 6 months of carry and training. I look at it like a tool and i do not care how it looks as long as it works. Its a glock, they are not pretty in the first place. It is too bad they changed it because i have a older G22 that has been beat and the finish is flawless on that one.

I kinda like an authentically worn gun, so it doesn't bug me, but important part is above a couple times. There are TWO finishes, and the top one is just to make it black. If the gun is visibly worn, it's still finished, and quite rustproof.

My Gen 4 G19 showed slide wear in the first week of use. All finishes will show wear over time with enough holstering. I consider a defensive firearm a tool and don’t treat mine like museum pieces. I have other guns for that role. Its the same idea as accepting the fact that your new truck is going to get dinged eventually. It doesn’t affect function, just cosmetics.

Wear is cool. It means you use it. The saddest thing for me is seeing a brand new toy from my childhood. I never had any that looked new. I enjoyed every minute of owning them.

I have carried for 15 years and none of my guns have had holster wear, including Glocks. Maybe it’s because I don’t use kydex? Or store them in safe holstered? I don’t repetitively take mine in and out of the holster. I bought a kydex holster once and the edge raked across the front serrations like playing cards in a bicycle tire. Returned it same day

Do you not practice with your carry gun from the holster at the range? Dry fire?

I probably have 1000 draws on a new carry gun before I even get it to the range.

Not anywhere near as much as you describe. I shoot a lot, but constantly drawing from holster no. I have practiced it some.

My SIG 226 got holster worn in what seemed like a matter of hours... I’ve carried my G4 Glock 34 daily for the past five years and it’s in great shape.
Finishes vary, and for the use yours isn’t bad at all .
Stay safe.

OP-
That doesn't look bad and some of that will disappear and reappear other places. At least that's how it seems. Some discoloration is material transfer onto your gun- but holster wear is normal. Guns are tools and I don't think anyone's glock is headed to a beauty contest anytime soon. But normal wear is different than abuse, abused guns look like ****, holster worn (honest ) guns look great to me. When it looks like something boba fet would have, post a picture and people will love it.

Here's my gen 4 g20 that's been carried a lot since 2014- shows some wear but not too bad.

I've had this g30sf a few years longer and it's been carried more but the finish resists wear a bit better than the gen 4 finish

Nothing stays new forever, that's why used stuffs cheaper.

This g42 has seen a fair amount of carry and has gone for a swim or 2 in the ocean, not too bad.

As long as your gun doesn’t start rusting or the scratches look like they are going deeper into the metal I wouldn’t sweat it, Can’t see the scratches looking through the sights.

Carry guns tend to get a lot of finish wear. If it bugs you, you can always get it refinished. But it will just get tore up again. The two guns I have carried more than any others are just plain ugly. Its honest wear.

Side note: The last Glock I bought has way worse slide scratches than yours. A police trade in. So much for the myth of the police trade in gun that looks bad on the outside and looks new on the inside. This thing couldn’t have been cleaned, ever. Grit and grime everywhere. No lube anywhere. Yet it ran. Not smoothly, but it ran. Now it runs smooth as silk, or as smooth as a Glock can run. I never needed to change out a channel liner to smooth out a gun before. The point is it runs. The scratches don’t stop it from doing what its supposed to do.

You could try a leather holster and possibly get less wear. But it’s a Glock and the wear will not hinder the operation of the firearm. Great comment by rskent on his police trade in gun. Any holster will wear the finish on your gun eventually.

I wonder why Glock changed the finish? I carried a gen. 2 1/2 Glock 26 every day for 19 years, had almost no finish wear and despite sweaty NYC summers, no rust.

On the other hand, the 1st. gen Ruger LCP I have started losing it's finish very quickly and broke out in a couple of tiny patches of rust. I guess I treated it like my Glock, that sure didn't work.

the rumor was the finish was changed to comply with epa standards. The old finish could not meet the regulations anymore.
