Ruger sr1911

I had an early SR1911CMD (4.25" .45ACP). Two front sights fractured/broke-off while shooting. Each front sight lasted ~5K rounds before breaking. Both front sights were replaced by Ruger taking about two weeks each time after sending Ruger the slide. The 3rd front sight was doing fine when I sold that Ruger.

The elevation on my early Ruger's sights were not regulated well. I later heard Ruger changed the front sight height on later Rugers but I didn't get any of these newer front sights. To compensate for the elevation, I'd bought a Novak adjustable rear sight as found on Ruger's website. This rear sight subsequently had its adjustment screw strip out while firing sending rear sight parts flying with some parts never to be found. I bought another adjustable rear sight which was doing fine when I sold off that Ruger.

Accuracy-wise, this Ruger never grouped well enough to my liking compared to my 5" 1911 guns or my Glock 30SF. I did replace the barrel bushing with one from EGW (some fitting required) which tightened my groups ~50% (maybe 8" to 4") but still not to my liking. Again, so I sold this Ruger.

The thumb-safety was a bit "soft" feeling. A different plunger and spring gave me the feel I preferred.

I did like the "Commander" 4.25" size. I liked how the plunger tube was integral to the frame (cast in as part of the frame, I believe).

I do miss having a 4.25" 1911, but after nine 1911 guns over the years, I'll just stay with the three 5" 1911 guns I still have.

They're solid guns, I'd say for under $1K, the Ruger SR1911 or the Springfield Range Officer series are the best bet for getting a good 1911.

Like post #26 above, I think the thumb safety was to easy to disengage, on both my 10mm and 45 acp Ruger 1911's.
The plunger tube spring is intentionally kinked, maybe to keep it from flying out, that reduces force.
I replaced the plunger tube spring with a new unkinked one and liked it (amount of force to disengage) better.

The Ruger 1911 has fed whatever HP I've tried, its been 100% reliable for several hundred rounds.

I've got the Commander size in .45. Just wish the 9mm came in the same wood grip configuration.
Commander grips are the same size as full-size, just order some wood ones. Dan Eagle makes some nice ones.

I have the full-size SR1911 in 10mm and love it; recoil spring is heavier than the .45, so racking the slide takes a firm grip and harder pull, but not a whole lot more. Mine had a set of really loud grips when I bought it, so I found a nice set of Dan Eagle grips for mine. DSC01338.JPG DSC01334 (2).JPG DSC01336.JPG

I also had the front sight problem that's been mentioned-- apparently they got a bad run of MIM front sights at one point. I wish I could see the look on my face when it suddenly disappeared while shooting. Those pistols are made where I live, so it wouldn't have been a big deal to just drive over there and have them fix it, but I decided I wanted a fiber optic so I did it myself. It's been otherwise dependable and accurate enough. Mine is the full-size one, so I don't carry it, as I have Commander and Defender sized ones for that. It's the one I take along if somebody wants to shoot a 1911 for the first time, as I know it's not going to misbehave in some way. I consider it to be a good value for the price.

I had the standard 5" model in 45. Nothing about it stood out to me. I suppose it's a solid choice if you like the looks and features. I have two other 1911s that are in the same general price range (or less) that I prefer over the Ruger. But a standard 1911 with sights a bit better than mil-spec suits me just fine.

I had a Commander sized SR 1911 for a few years.it was very reliable and I had no problems with it. Wish I had not traded it away.

I have had the alloy commander Ruger for a few years now and have been very happy with it, with my 200 SWC target loads it shoots just about 1" at 15 yards form a rest. I can't complain about that. The hole on the right is not a flier, my mistake I saw the sights over there when it went off.

are these your reloads if so whats your load and good shooting

My one and only auto loader is a full sized SR1911. Very reliable shooter. It eats and digests every configuration of ammo I feed it with no exceptions. Nearly 10K handloads down the tube.

I have modified it a bit, though:

1. Added a C & S Trigger kit to reduce the trigger break from 5.25 to 3.5 pounds and to remove creep,

2. Had a Kart match bushing fitted to the slide for better accuracy,

3. Added FO front sight and adjustable rear sight. Both purchased off of shopRuger.com,

4. Had a trigger shoe machined for greater trigger finger comfort. This pistol is strictly for range use only and no carry,

5. Changed the grips to the white plastic as these are just slightly wider.
