Beretta APX

That's not how I read that post at all, seemed pretty reasonable to me. Glocks do have the biggest share of the market, they just don't float my boat and I think they are overpriced for what they are.
I agree with on on both fronts, BUT I always pick with him and give him a hard time because he always finds a way to brings Glocks. I just can't help myself. :)

Surprise, Surprise... Should have known who would start talking about how great Glocks are again lol.. Some hate to admit it, but a lot of people see M&Ps, CZs, Beretta, HK, FN, XD's, Sigs, etc over Glocks. Matter of fact, S&W is the #1 seller of handguns in the U.S. over the past few years at least. Even though Glock has a decent slice of the pie, in the big picture, it's only a small slice compared to all handgun sales. A lot more people are not buying Glocks than people are buying them. I'm going to pull a number out of the air here... Having let's say 30% of the handgun market as a whole is respectable, but that isn't having a strong hold IMHO....
Why don’t you go back and read my post again and point out where I said Glocks are so great. I just said that Glock has a very large piece of the pie. I don’t know why every time I say something about Glocks you have to pipe up with your anti Glock crap. There are some guns that I don’t care for, but you don’t see me Popping into topics about them just to give my unwanted opinion.
I’m not a Glock fanboy, mater of fact I am not a fanboy of any brand of gun. I base my likes on how a gun preforms. This is based on combat and Duty experiences. I’ve carried Beretta, S&W and Glocks in my line of work. I have trusted my life to all three brands.
And yes, you are right that S&W does sell more handguns then Glock. But Glock does not cater to the lower end like S&W does with their SD series of guns. They also don’t sell revolvers.
But it’s a fact that no one had a successful polymer frame, striker fire pistol on the market till Glock came along. And just about every striker fire polymer frame pistol that has come out in the last 30 years, has been to compete with Glock.
I like many different guns, some more then others. I really like the Beretta APX, but it hasn’t been a big seller like Beretta though it would be. I think a lot of people are turned off by the slide, because it looks big. But I think that if most were to give the gun a try, they would like it. Maybe with Beretta dropping the price, sales will go up and the gun will stay in production a little longer.

Most of their sales are from the M&P line which is much more popular than their Sigma line. I guaranty you that is we did a poll across multiple firearm sites, the overwhelming amount of S&W handgun owners will own a M&P and only a small a very small percentage will own Sigmas. Other than that, Sig, HK, Walther, Beretta, and others do not have a budget line, and collectively, the all over sell Glock by a lot. My point is, Glock does not have a "strong hold" on the handgun market whether we're including budget guns or not.

I think Gunny did a great service to Beretta APX. He made some really nice comments and liked the gun. Even if he choose the Glock over the Beretta that is fine as well. It would make sense as he is use to the gun. But what he did do is actually buy the gun, actually shoot one and how many others will bash a gun and never even have shot it? Gunny paid $500 for his and IMO a fair price. Now, since there is a way to get this gun even less expensively, than maybe Beretta will actually get more folks to try them and many that try them are going to love them. And more exposure the more they sell.
People really do need to at least try one. If you can pick up a quality gun now at the cost of $329 then you may have hit a unexpected jackpot.
Thanks for the review Gunny. Got my blood up and going and ordered one.
By the way, Gunny on another post actually broke the gun down and did comparisons, which IMO showed the great build quality of the APX. And breaking down a gun and comparing is the proper way to compare. Something only a few on this forum do and not many clerks behind the Counter.

I'm a smart *** and have a sarcastic personally that I guess doesn't come off on the inet and causes people to take things to seriously. Which in turn I'll start taking them seriously.

I have a few guns on my to buy list. I’m really thinking about ordering another APX because, under $400 is a great price.
About two weeks ago someone hacked my bank card and I’m waiting on my new card to show up. Once it does, I’ll be ordering another gun, which may be a Beretta. I’m waiting on S&W to kick off there Spring sale like they do every year. There’s a M&P M2.0 in FDE waiting for me to order it. I looked at a used HK VP9 the others day. It’s like new for $459, still thinking about it. I came very close to picking up a FNX-45 Tactical the other day. At $999 it was a great deal. I really like the gun but the grip is just to big for my hand.
I think it’s great that there are so many great guns on the market.

Then I expect more threads from you about Berettas, HKs, other manufacturers. (joking again) The only other pistol I have my eye on is the PX4 Compact. I've been wanting one of those for a while. Nothing else is really on my list. I already have more pistols than I can shoot on a regular basis if at all...

You do realize that S&W does not make the Sigma any more and hasn’t for a few years. What they make now is the Self Defense series, SD9VE, SD40VE and a free different special runs for companies like Academy Soprts. But I guess you don’t know that the S&W SW and SD series guns are one of the most popular guns picked up from criminals, across the country. But the guys using then don’t get on gun forums much.
I guess that I’m just not in a great mood today, haven’t bought a new gun in a couple of weeks. Think I’ll head over to the LGS to see what they have in stock.

I was thinking of the SD9VE... Doesn't change the fact that the M&P line from the Bodyguard to the Shield, to the 2.0 make up the bulk of their handgun sales. The SD9VE isn't nearly as popular in sales. If we break it down by price point and handguns priced between $450-$600, then yes, Glock sells the most. If you add the how much Sig, CZ, HK, Walther, FN, S&W, Springfield, Beretta, etc into the equation, Glock might have a decent share, but don't have a huge overwhelming share percentage wise. We both are basically right depending on how we frame it. Like you, I like them all regardless of manufacture.

It started out early on with us debating in other threads, but now, I just light heartily give you a hard time about it based on our past. I really didn't care other then just picking with you a little... I'll stop though. If it makes you feel any better, I defended Taurus and other budget guns, and @Trunk Monkey gives me a hard time about it every chance he gets.

Not upset, just a bad day I guess. I went to the local gun shop and looked at the HK VP9. They want $479 for it. Going back Monday to talk with the owner to see if he will give me a better deal.
They only had one Beretta, a PX4. They’re just not my cup of tea.

The APX is a great shooter! A buddy of mine has an APX Tactical which I had never seen before. It has a slide cutout for an optic and he had some kind of open red dot. I've only shot it on a couple occasions but a fair amount of ammo each time. Overall I like my VP9 a little more but the APX would be on my short list if I wanted another striker gun and wasn't going with an HK. I have a Beretta Nano though and a VP9 so that kind of covers my bases, striker gun wise. Maybe I could see a VP9c in my future as it would be right between the there two in size.

I went back to the shop today. Picked up the VP9 for $400:):). Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
Now I can take both the APX and the VP9 to the range together.

I picked up my new APX from my local dealer today, the full-size pistol in case with loading tool, extra mag, cleaning brush and lock along with the bonus 21-round mag that was part of the promotion and an olive green grip frame that I added to the order. It's my first-ever modern auto pistol, the other guns I have are mostly old or weird or both.

First impression...it seems smaller than I expected, not at all bulky or awkward, and fits well in the hand with the medium back strap though I do need to shift my grip to drop a mag. I am still looking for an OWB holster and double mag pouch that I like, but for now I found a basic Fobus IWB holster for $20 delivered. I'll provide pics and shooting impressions once I get to the range.

When I first shot mine , I tried it with the small and then the medium backstrap. The small felt better, but I shot better with the medium.
The frame is very easy to switch out, only took me a few minutes.
I bet you will enjoy shooting it.

Thanks, I'll let you know, GunnyUSMC.

Does anyone have any recommendations for OWB holsters for the APX, preferably nylon, kydex, etc. rather than leather?

I cant speak to the APX, but don't look down at the PX4... to this day, I have never shot a new type of pistol as well as a PX4. That thing just fit. But its the AMC Pacer of pistols, and I just couldn't bring myself to buy one. My first magazine was as good on targets as the GP100 I shot for years before, and would only improve if I would get one. They are ergonomically perfect. If the looks don't turn you away, they are excellent in my experience.

Gunny, order that APX. I ordered one in 40 and 9mm. They are amazing. I have glocks, m&p's, walthers, a sig P320 and i prefer the APX over all of them.

I regret not getting another in 9mm in that FDE color. All the ones for 329.99 are sold out at the moment.

I expected to have the large grip on mine, as I have bigger hands and it felt best in hand.

Yet I shoot it best with the smallest grip, go figure.

I have an IWB from Muddy River Tactical, which makes an OWB I believe. Very well made and reasonably priced.

I also had the IWB/OWB combo holster from Clinger (stingray?) That was OK, just not what I had wanted for IWB, but would work fine OWB.

I can't verify that it would work for anyone else but my Galco Matrix belt slide for my Sig 226R actually fits perfect, but mine is loose on my SIG (my other one is very tight on my Glocks) so I'm not sure if that'd work for anyone else.

I have small hands, and I use the largest backstrap for it to shoot POA/POI for me :)

I have a Matrix holster for my P2000 I love. Someone told me the Sig 229 Matrix holster fit their Beretta APX. So, I ordered one. It fits, but ya gotta give it a hard yank to get it out. If I had a dremmel, I might loosen it up a little.

I have had both the PX4 and the APX. I'll start with the good. I prefer hammer fired over striker and think the PX4 trigger is one of the best. The APX is decent for striker though to. I HATE HATE HATE the PX4 grip. I think it's the worst grip on the market. I think Beretta laid an egg, but that's just my opinion. A complete waste to have such a nice trigger on the slippery turd of a plastic nasty feeling grip. I would much prefer the APX grip over the PX4.
Again, one man's opinion :D

OK, I finally got out the range with my new APX. Good news, bad news, and some pics attached....

The good news is that the APX went bang every time, I like how it feels in the hand, and it handles fine. The trigger is good for a striker but it's not going to win any awards. It's shooting low and to the left (that's an 8" target at 10 yards standing) but it's too early to say if that's me or the gun. FWIW, my groups with my S&W 642 were centered. I'll have to experiment with the other grip inserts to see if that changes anything (I was using the small one, going to move up to the medium ).

The bad news is that, at least with the CCI Blazer aluminum-cased 115 gr FMJ I was using, it seems to eject brass back at the shooter. I had three go down my collar, one in my shirt pocket, and more on my head and shoulders, this in one range session of 17 + 17 + 21 = 55 rounds. Also, while the standard 17-round magazines functioned perfectly, the factory 21-round extended magazine failed to lock back the slide on the last round, even when I pressed it up into the pistol while pulling the slide back on an empty mag.

To be honest, I am more of a collector than a shooter and have little experience with new guns and none with new guns not working quite right out of the box. Do I contact Beretta about the ejection and the magazine not holding the slide open?

Cheers,

Matthew

Blazer aluminum case ammo can cause ejection problems. It could be that the cases are a little harder to extract, causing more energy to be used to extract the case. This will slow the slide down enough to cause a weaker ejection.
I would clean the gun before you go shooting again and use a different type of ammo.
As to the point of impact, it may have to do with trigger control. Do some dry firing before your next range trip.
I have also found some guns shooting better with 124 gr ammo.
