New SIG Pistol In The House.....err Sort of. SIG ASP SUPER TARGET

Well I received this interesting box today.


Inside is my new SIG pistol.......from Italy......really.


The pistol in question is a SIG ASP Super Target. A single stroke pneumatic .177 air pistol. I love my air guns and although I realize a single shot, low powered air pistol isn't everybody's cup of bourbon I love em. My air guns have largely replaced my .22LR shooting time and I find 95% of the time I get far more enjoyment from them then .22 Long Rifle. Besides I always need new places to hemorrhage money.

I have to say out of the box the pistol feels great in the hand and is put together well. It is designed to VAGUELY look like a SIG P210. More aptly a SIG P210s homely, shy, shut in of a cousin but I digress. It actually doesn't look too bad in person, although I would prefer a nicer set of grips and maybe just a WEEEE bit less verbiage. I mean Ruger might put billboards on their guns but I was sure the one on this one was going to start off with "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."


Those two things out of the way I gotta say for the short time I have had it out of the box I am liking it. It has the right amount of power and noise for my desires, has good trigger out of the box without any adjusting and seems like it will be an accurate little shooter once it and I settle in. I am very happy with the sights.

So what about that Italian SIG comment you ask? Well it clearly states MADE IN ITALY in chapter three of the billboard and upon closer inspection I would guess it is made by Chiappa as it functionally identical to my FAS 6004, which is a good thing as my FAS has been a fantastic gun.


The first couple of 10 shot groups, off hand at about 25 feet are perfectly adequate for me. My skill level fluctuates between passable and Parkinson's so unless its rested I am not the best person to judge groups by but for the first 20 shots through the gun I am happy. (NOTE my backstop is OLD and needs to be cleaned so I tend to get some spall coming back. I have noted that on the targets.


I do believe this little guy will do quite well.



One thing to mention as far as airguns go. If you are unfamiliar with airguns in general they all tend to need a little break in and they all have pellet preferences. Much like real guns you cannot just shove any ammo in there and expect it all to perform the same.

The group above was with another "ammo" as I play around with the gun and it produced a pretty nice group for me off hand. The egregious "flyer" to the left was ALL ME. My only surprise was that it was closer then I thought it would be, I felt myself sling that one way off. Again......passable to Parkinson's.

So all in all there you have it an Italian made SIG not firearm pistol. Just the thing you all came to a firearms forum to learn about.

I did a small rested group. Well rested on a mobile and twisty office chair but rested none the less.

One quick update. So far no mechanical issues at all. The trigger could be crisper but I don't want to dork with it.

It seems to like the Finale Heavy Match Pellets.

I did some RESTED shooting around 10m-11m (I was somewhere between 33-40 feet). My first several shots I was just trying to find a point of aim to use. I slung one shot into the clip holding the target (DOH!!!) and a few above and around trying to dial in.

I did finally get a very nice five shot group from a RESTED sitting on the floor position. I could NEVER come anywhere near this standing offhand. Honestly I'd be ecstatic with my sight in stuff above standing offhand. At any rate purely mechanically it appears that the SIG will shoot nice groups. That said the sights and the trigger definitely make in more of a standard semi automatic pistol understudy much more-so then a target gun.

It's a wicked fun gun though.

The HW75 is better made / finished at least as far as my subjective feel and has a better trigger out of the box.

Accuracy it’s hard to tell as I am the limiting factor for either it seems. The HW75 has more of a target grip and feel. The SIG more “normal gun” feel.

I have the following SSP pistols and feel that they all stack up reasonably well against each other although some are better at being real target grade guns where others are more higher end accurate plinkers. The SIG falls more in the higher accuracy plinker camp.

SIG ASP
IZH46m (this is a REAL 10m competitive pistol)
HW75 (more target grade end of the scale but still more accurate plinker)
HW40 (high end plinker)
FAS 6004 (could probably play in the shallow end of the competitive pool).

honestly from price to accuracy to build they all compare fairly well to each other with none jumping out at me as sucking or being night and day better then the others with the exception of the IZH absolutely being a tier above in raw 10m competitive accuracy and trigger etc.

I'm not very pleased with my Sig ASP Super Target at the moment. Had a catastrophic trigger failure yesterday. Upon cocking the trigger kicked sideways like a pin broke on one side jamming it up. I was able to push it back to center and discharge it. AOA said they don't handle warranties so I have to contact Sig. Personally I feel a company that sells a product should also deal with their providers on behalf of their customers. I guess I just used to the way it used to be in small town America. At the end of the day it is a Chiappa product and Chiappa isn't exactly know for their QC. That said both my FAS 6004 and SIG ASP have so far performed just fine. Now full disclosure and I don't shoot every day and like my firearms I have a LOT of airgun variety so I spread my shooting out across different platforms so it is likely I am not generally hard on either my airguns or my firearms. There are some I shoot far more then others but the love gets spread out so to speak.

I would be interested to hear what you find out from SIG. As far as Pyramyd I can't necessarily fault them, although I have gotten pretty stellar service from them over the years and who knows maybe if we were were in normal times they may have been more likely to just handle it vs. now where everybody is swamped/has there hands tied while still trying to do their jobs.

I honestly wouldn't judge anybody too harshly during this global weirdness.

JESUS reading is fundamental. I read AOA but because I bought mine from Pyramyd I just mentally filled in Pyramyd. AOA, is a different beast. I have bought from them, actually have something coming now from them, but never really dealt with their customer service beyond they seem to be slow to email etc.

Good to know they sent you a label without any issue.

So I ran another 60 or shots through mine today. I was looking for the malfunction/break that you had and so far all good in the hood. The trigger still has a bit too much take up and breaks a bit too far back but other than that I have had no issues and I love shooting the thing.

I say that to hopefully give you hope that once your issue is addressed you will have a solid gun.

Of course we all know that after this post mine will break the next time out.

That sucks but that’s honest wear.

Conversely I shot one of the best airgun groups of my life yesterday, with a gun I have not had out in a long time or shot much while forgetting to turn my target lighting on. Total blind squirrel / nut moment. I got pictures and logged em as soon as I could because I don’t have skill or ability to do that stuff on a regular basis so looking back at the pictures makes me feel good.

Thought I would post a followup since Steve had issues with his ASP early on. Mine continues to show no mechanical issues or problems. I took the day off today and spent a good portion of my day playing with the airguns. I had the the ASP out and it did rather well, at least as far as this shooter is concerned.
