I'm reassembling a S&W 38 DA 3rd model and can't for the life of me figure out/remember how the cylinder stop is installed/oriented. I have stared at the parts and understand how they are arranged in general but must not have been paying attention when the cylinder stop came out.

I'm hoping @Driftwood Johnson will see this and chime in.

I can’t find the picture I was looking for. Probably on my last phone.

To reassemble the cylinder stop... the trigger mech has to be pretty well out of the gun to be out of the way. It goes in with the teardrop shaped part pointing back and down along the curve of the frame. There is a small leaf spring that puts pressure down onto the end of the teardrop which is what pushes it up into position to lock the cylinder. There are 2 pinholes in the teardrop. They are different sizes. The larger one is the pivot hole, and will be obvious when it’s in proper orientation. If you are still having trouble let me know and I will try to dig up pictures.

Maybe these will help as I'm unsure what you consider the teardrop shape. First picture is the stop in the general location it has to be. Second is how I thought it went back together.

That was it. I had the stop oriented backwards. A man has to hold his tongue just right to get hand spring on the right side of the front seat and still be able to align the trigger with it's pin.

Reassembly is complete. I must have installed the stop incorrectly as it freewheels when not in lock up. The stop does not rise after the trigger is released. I suspect it should have gone over something and I installed it under that thing. Now what is supposed to make the stop rise after the trigger is released?

The darn thing times out very well.

The more I think about it, the relationship between the cylinder stop and the rear sear has to be what pulls the cylinder stop out of the way when the hammer is started on it way back to cock/double action trigger pull. So, it seems to me that the extension of the rear sear should go on top of the extension of the cylinder stop. Is that correct?

I'm not sure how I could have installed that incorrectly when I reassembled it, but apparently I did. Can anyone confirm?
