All,

My daughter was born 5.12.20. 5 LBS 14 OZ. She's amazing! My wife and I are enjoying every minute.

That being said, at some point I will need a nice pistol safe that's easy to access for home invasion situations. I want to be protection ready, but out of the hands of my daughter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

TIA!

Congratulations!!!!
I'm a big fan of the Fort Knox pistol safe. No batteries, heavy duty, quick access.
I have 3 young children and am confident that while maybe not quite as fast to access as some of the spring loaded RFID options out there that my Ft Knox would withstand a teenager left alone for hours with power tools... Can't say that for the Hornady or similar options. Plus I love simplex locks...

Can you setup your own combo?

Once the combo is entered, just turn the switch?

No batts is cool!
Yep - instructions are provided and it is recommended that you set your on combo. Any sequence of one or more buttons at once but can use each button only once. Turn the knob after entering your combo and lift the lid. It's opening is assisted by a hydraulic arm that keeps it open until you want it closed - prevents the heavy lid from falling on your fingers but doesn't have enough oomph to pop the lid open

Looks like the have fastener holes too. Excellent! Thanks @ShootingIsFun. Definitely in the running.

I guess I need to figure out where and how I want to mount the safe I do buy. I definitely do not want a keyed unit. Major limitations there.

Congratulations!

No real recommendations except to research the specific model as many (most?) of the quick access handgun containers on the market can be opened by a curious child. The simplex lock safes e.g. fas1 seem to be more secure than average.

Agreed. It's like a puzzle. It's needs to be a non reachable, unsolvable puzzle.

FAS1, PB1 or VLine. All are excellent options.
Congratulations!!!!! And I salute you for locking your weapons down instead or “putting them out of reach” or some such.

Excellent! Choices are great. Somewhat interested in the VLine in-wall safes.

Several of the safes so far listed look like good truck safes as well.

I forget the type of lock those ft Knox have, but they aren't typically very secure if a youngster has access to youtube. For the wee ones it should be fine though.
I assume you are referring to the limited number of combos? There are only 1081 possible combos with this type of lock... So it is true that an intelligent and determined teen could possibly figure it out eventually by running through all the possible combos.

Congratulations!
I've got 2 daughter's - 1& 3 (both just had a birthday last week), you're blessed my friend.
No recommendations for pistol safes - they're a compromise, pick your poison.

I’m right behind you... kinda. I have 2 under 10 that think that they rule the world, and little bit will be here in about 6 weeks, all girls.

they make a safe that mounts to a wall, encases a firearm to where it’s visible but not accessible. I keep looking at those when the ads pop up. I’m either gonna get one of those or build a copy of a “tactical walls” product.

Congratulations friend.

The good thing is that most any safe will keep a kiddo out of it.
You just have to find the one that works for you best.

My bedside safe is just one with a 4 digit code that unlocks it.
I'm not that concerned about the 3-4 seconds it takes to open it (I know it will be a few more seconds than that in the middle of the night waking up from a dead sleep).
We have a small dog that goes absolutely insane when someone is at the door, so I'll be warned in adequate time I think.

I have definitely decided on the mechanical lock route. However, there are several out there. None of them seem to be quite perfect in my eyes, but some good products nonetheless. It seems like having a couple would be the way to go. Something to work towards.

I read several reviews on amazon where button malfunction is a possibility. Anyone have these issues? Seems like it happens infrequently, but a major bummer if you have a pistol in there if that happens...or worse yet, when an invader finds his/her way into your house. They do seem far more reliable than their electronic counterparts.

I’m not too worried about the combo YouTube hack issues mentioned above. I’ve got many years before that is a concern. YouTube will likely not be introduced to her...hopefully ever...but I know that’s not a reality. I also think early education with firearms, hunter’s ed, etc. will curb some of that. It worked for me anyways.

Does anyone use theirs as a mobile vault?

Thanks for all the replies. This has given me a good starting point.

For sure.
I may catch backlash for this, but I never had a safe or even a steel cabinet until my daughter started having friends over.
We kept handguns out of reach and ammunition wasn't stored where it was accessible. Long guns were in closet corners, again unloaded with ammo stored out of reach of kiddos.
When friends started coming over, I got a steel cabinet and the bedside safe for the HD handgun. I know how my daughter was raised and taught. I didn't know about those other kids.

Lots of advise on safes. Making guns safe from young hands is important. Equally important is education and trading of those young minds in firearm safety and proper use. And start it early. Preaching to the choir perhaps.
Just my two cents worth.

Congratulations. I had a Gun Box RFID safe that I bought a few months before my son was born. It got replaced recently because the lock plate was not resetting by itself as it should. I have it setup in my closet holding my secondary firearm. 7 years isn't bad for an electronic safe.

It was replaced by a Fort Knox pistol box. As mentioned above, no batteries or power needed. The combination does have a limit so it can be figured out if there is enough time. And the combination can be user set. Best price linked below, where I got mine.

you might have some influence with your own kids but the kids they invite over or the guys who stop buy to burgle your house you have less influence over.

Sure! I couldn’t agree more. In some ways it’s an advantage having a 1300 sq ft house rather than a McMansion. Easier to keep an eye on things and/or kick the kids outside...regardless of the weather conditions.

I’m a long...long way from teenage years. I can reevaluate my situation then.
