I have this S&W No.1-1/2 Single Action, which shipped from the factory in April 1878. As you can see, it's in nice shape for a 142 year old revolver. I would like to remove the grips to inspect underneath them.
I am able to remove the grip screws, but unfortunately, the grip panels seem to be stuck to the frame. My SWAG is that there is old oil which congealed into glue holding them on.
I am concerned that if I try to pry them off they will be damaged. I'm thinking maybe if I can soak the gun in something it would get in and dissolve the old congealed oil.
Obviously, I would need to use something that will not damage the nickel plating or the 19th Century rubber grips. Any suggestions? Ballistol? Straight, food grade mineral oil? Something else?
Thanks in advance.
@Driftwood Johnson to the courtesy phone, please.
