Congratulations, you have a couple of years of taking care of an object that stays out of trouble that is not local to itself. Feed, clean, sleep and repeat Ll be on the list for awhile, might even be better methods available for less before you really need something. Enjoy it while you can, your life is going to accelerate from this point.

For 2¢, take some time and check out the content at Lock Picking Lawyer on YouTube.
He's found a couple of the nightstand "safes" that can be defeated by a 3 y/o.
Usually by dropping them.
Others by simply poking stuff in them.
Some of those from using sophisticated implements like paperclips or butter knives.

Now, in all the cases, the lock work exactly as advertised--you do the code or turn the key and it unlocks just like it says on the instructions. It's just that the manufacturers failed to test the merchandise versus toddlers. (Engineers tend to focus on the problem at hand, and sometimes do not seek out more problems to solve.)

I did see one of those episodes. I’m glad that guy is out there to show everyone How to do it....especially kids looking to get into trouble.

On the flip side, you get to see the weaknesses in certain products.

Congratulations! You are on the right track. Teach her about gun safety....keep her familiar with guns....take the mystery out of it....but never leave the window open for a day of bad judgement. It’s one mistake that you can’t take back.

I have been very satisfied with my Gun Vaults.

Today's (5/25/20) VCDL Alert pointed to the article
Gun Safes and Residential Security Containers: Know What You’re Really Buying TTAG CONTRIBUTOR |MAY 21, 2020
with good info about the reality of "gun safes" (Residential Security Containers - RSC).
Of course, to keep the kids out you do not necessarily need a "gun safe" or even a real UL rated safe, just an adequately locked container. For older miscreants, then yes, need to look deeper at your needs.

Thanks for the information. I have seen articles like the one you posted in the past. I already have a large combo dial safe that holds all my long guns. I’m looking for a little pistol cab that will keep the youngster out of the HD pistol yet open fast if/when needed.

I’m researching the reviews on all the mechanical lock boxes. I’ve decided I will definitely go this route as I don’t want to deal with the cosmic electronic doo dads on the “modern” safes. It will either be a FAS1, Ft. Knox, or VLine. Right now I’m kinda trying to figure out where I want it to live and what size I want. I’m also trying to decide if I want to tether it to an object so it’s mobile and I can use it in a vehicle too.

All,

My daughter was born 5.12.20. 5 LBS 14 OZ. She's amazing! My wife and I are enjoying every minute.

That being said, at some point I will need a nice pistol safe that's easy to access for home invasion situations. I want to be protection ready, but out of the hands of my daughter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

TIA!
You have PLENTY of time to do your research and determine your budget so do your due diligence and buy quality.

Youtube is great for narrowing down a safe. Write down the models of the ones you are interested in and see if there is a video of them being defeated. Chances are, once your kid reaches a certain age they can look up YT themselves and get into a safe.

Congratulations!!!!
I'm a big fan of the Fort Knox pistol safe. No batteries, heavy duty, quick access

Daughters are special. Enjoy every day.

I have a couple of the Ft Knox pistol boxes. Great product. Simplex locks can be overcome by trying every combination. This is a simple matter of time. One key point to remember about the Simplex lock, you can use buttons in combination. For five buttons (1,2,3,4,5), pushing 1+2 together and 3+4+5 together is different than pushing 1 then 2 then 3... Patterns can be your friend.

For longer guns, consider v-line. They use Simplex locks and are either wall mounted or between the studs. A note of caution, the box material is significantly lighter than the Ft Knox pistol box. Yeppers, I have v-line, also.

Yes, that will be brandished frequently!
Naw, having it out in your lap or on the kitchen table cleaning it is not brandishing, just a nicely visible reminder.

By the way, when my daughter was born I said I needed a shotgun when she turned 16.
Nope... 11.

I've only bought 3 guns since my daughters were born, one is 3 the little one is 1. If I'm going for intimidation , I had that covered a decade ago
...

If you have a daughter, you'll also need a shotgun.;)

Reminds me of a woman I was dating years back. It was meet her parents time and as we walked up the drive way I heard a shotgun blast from the house shooting in the opposite direction of us. "Was that a 20ga?" Girlfriend wasn't a gun person. The father was supposedly shooting at a squirrel in the backyard. I always thought he was trying to intimidate me. It didn't work because right after that we chatted while cleaning guns. He was a state champion trap shooter. He and I got along great. Her and I, not so much.

The idea that people wouldn’t know about bad security products if no one mentioned it is common ... and wrong. Consumers wouldn’t know about them. Kids and crooks would get the word eventually. It’s not like the companies making crap don’t know—they just don’t want us to know.

Right now I’m kinda trying to figure out where I want it to live and what size I want.

That's one thing I always recommend to a customer. Consider the style of the safe and the different mounting possibilities. For example, if it opens like a drawer it can really only be mounted one way. Same if it's like a cigar box. Some can be mounted in a variety of ways giving you more options and flexibility to find the best place for your application.

Congrats on the baby girl Dad!

Is there down side of it being keyed also?

Yes, if you leave the key laying around and backup entry feature is still functional. As far as breaking in/security, the lock I use is a high security Camlock T8. It's not just a cheap backup key like most are on the electronic handgun safes. This is a option on all my safes for the last 5 or 6 years and about 75% of orders have the key option.

Will revisit and research links in this thread for safe purchase. Thanks for great posts!
