I would look for a Redfield 2 piece base, a set of Redfield rings with the bottom screws and maybe a Redfield Widefield scope. Or an older steel tube Weaver scope.
Why the bottom screws over the top screws?

I remember when Remington came out with the classic in 35 Whelen in 1988. It made the cartridge a commercial round at the time.

I was upset that it was not offered in a left handed version. I thought the 35 Whelen would have been a great addition to my 30-06.

IMO they are the best of the "poor man's" 700s (ADL, BDL, Classic). The stock is just right. I have one in .35 Whelen and it shoots 1/4" 3-shot groups @ 100 yds. with handloads.

A lot of 35 Whelen fans for the 700 classic! Maybe a smart business move : bring it back in 35 Whelen

Obviously I'm late to this thread but I have a 700 Classic in .270 Win that I bought new back in 1979 (or was it 1980?). I believe it was then also available in other common calibers, like .25-06 and .30-06, although I don't think I ever saw one back then in a short action. Mine had no iron sights and while at one time I shot it with a big zoom scope I subsequently swapped in a Redfield Widefield 4X as I preferred the simplified and streamlined look. The rifle has always been super accurate especially with handloads. The rifle is well named as a "Classic".
