How does the Army process the brass used for the ultra long range rifles?

That is each rifle has custom loaded shells specific to the rifle for long range work.

I wouldn't think so, but maybe someone who knows will chime in. I could always ask my Marine nephew, but when he spoke about long range shooting during active duty he never said anything to make me think it was anything other than factory match ammo. Perhaps made just for the military, but boxed match ammo. There is confusion enough in the military without rifle specific ammo.

There are some good threads about brass prep, load work, powders, rifles, etc, for long range target shooting here in the forums.

Ammunition for sniper rifles is standardized across all branches. It is made to certain specifications for the military at gov. ammo plants or by civilian manufacturers.

They accept it as live ammunition, fire it, and leave the brass laying in the field.

This isn’t real.

The only handloading I am aware of done by our military is by and for the competition teams. @Bart B. used to share considerable insight into how that ammunition was developed, loaded, and tested, here and several other places online.

If you are seeking “the best” then the department of defense is not it.

their ammo is not the fastest, most accurate, or most aerodynamic you can buy for their caliber, but it is forgiving, it’s gonna shoot pretty well in every gun in most every condition.

depending on what you want to do, there are great handloaders and great factory offerings that are better than the DOD sniper loads
