I see your in Wis your Deer can get big Have you given any thought about a 44 or 45 but out of the two I would go with the SBH with the 7" barrel

At less than 35yds with my handloads there isn't anything to worry about as long as I don't hit the shoulder. But I'm not that lousy of a shot.

I Have a GP, and a New Vaquero. Both are very good. The GP was made in 1989, and needed to have all its springs replaced in 2012, but still holds tight. I don't know how much it takes to wear out the springs, (I am not the original owner) but none of the parts show any signs of wear. New ruger single actions are mechanically about as complex as their double actions, so no advantage there. DA's are much easier to take apart and clean. That said, I did carry the Vaquero for about 5 years everywhere, and shoot it better. As far as I know, Ruger SA's are all on 44/45 frames, excluding the oddities, meaning a SA will weight more than a GP. Either will be great, but the GP has some kind of obscene toy for a grip these days, and that would make me go SA. Eagle grips makes a very nice S&W style grip, if thats you thing, but another $100.

I would opt for the Blackhawk. Had both and really didn't like the grip configuration of the GP100 or for the DA/SA trigger. Still have my older 3 screw Blackhawk and it's grip is perfect for my smaller size hand. Plenty of heft there too for reducing the felt recoil somewhat.

A time proven classic. Your great grandson will be carrying that long after you and I have turned to dust. My Blackhawk turned me into a reloader.

I've been reloading since I was 16. Dad had to buy components for me.
But that was mainly deer loads for my 300wsm and several hundred moderate 357 loads for paper punching.

Not to seem selfish, but they better bury me with it and a few hundred rounds.

The original-pattern GP100 factory grip is absolute perfection, for my hands, so I am biased toward the GP100, for that reason.
When I bought my first GP100 years ago, I tried a number of different grips, thinking that I would find something more comfortable. I never did. It's still wearing its factory grips and probably always will.

Blackhawk is great for deer. But if you are in bear country you may want a double action. If you shoot either in single action mode for hunting then get the GP MHO.

I personally shoot my 6" 686 more accurately than I do my 6.5" .357 Blackhawk. I hate that fact but it is still true. I could hunt with either.

I bought a 9mm cylinder from eBay and it happened to fit my 6.5" Blackhawk just fine.

I've read that sometimes they need some fitting.
