What's your opinion. Why one over the other one. I have each one. I'm leaning towards the 7mm08
Just slightly. But I love my 308. I have a 2018 Remington M7 7mm08 and a 2016 Remington M700
Stainless if I had t sale one, witch one and why

Unless your dead set on shooting the cheapest possible ammo available, then Id drop the .308 all else equal.

Theres nothing I can think of that the .308 actually does better than the 7-08 untill you get into the 200gr bullets, and personally I want more case for a bullet that heavy.

Now the rifles might dictate a different choice tho.
If your primary need/want for these two cartridges is lots of carrying and less shooting the model 7 would be my choice, even if it ment going .308 over 7mm. Like wise if more time was going to be spent at the bench, or just shooting in general, id go with the heavier, longer (IMO easier to shoot) 700. Again choosing the .308 over the 7mm if need be.

for a given case, and energy level, the smaller bullet will always product more wear. Now I know the Creedmore freaks will call me stupid, but that physics. A 7mm will wear out faster than a 7.6. That said, I think the 7-08 is about as close to a perfect round as can be, regard them highly. I don't own one, but do a 308, thou If a 7mm was available in a lighweight barrel for a similar price I may have gone that way. .308 is a bigger, heavier bullet, and while we may have forgotten the value of that in the quest to kill "knockdown power", it does still mean something, otherwise, we would all be shooting 22-250's. If you want to go cast bullet, 308 will get you a little farther, and some like the extra kick. 30 cal is a very diverse, relatively cheap bullet, with slightly more options. Finally, aside from slightly straighter ballistics, and slightly lower recoil, it doesn't offer more, at the cost of a much less common round. It comes nowhere near outclassing the 308 to the point of changing you hunting options, or target range, at least for 99.999% out there. But if the 7-08 came out instead of the 308, I doubt any complaints would be made, except the people saying it should have been a 6.5 instead.

Maybe the memory is becoming dim. You know, the previous times components were hard to find and people that had them were accused of "hoarding." If that happened again (oh, I know, it will NEVER happen again) you might find 308 Winchester cases and .308 diameter bullets a bit easier to find.

Other than that, the 7mm/08 is a fine cartridge but I think it should have been a 270/08.

Chit, the M7 VS. M700 should have answered the question regardless of the caliber, gotta keep the M7!

Who the hell wants to lug around an extra 1/2" of receiver? :D

Between the two I'd keep the 7mm-08, it's just about the perfect whitetail cartridge. I've already got a M7 in .260, if not it'd be a 7mm-08.

A Model 7 in 7mm-08 is a dandy walk around hunting rifle. My go-to hunting rifle for many years was a Model 7 in .308. It was my last .30 caliber to go when I decided to get out of .30 calibers altogether. It was promptly replaced by a Model 7 in 7mm-08 (it doesn't wear the bipod in the field). I'd sell the 700 and not look back.

(Actually, if I had a 700 stainless, I'd have it rebarreled in .280 Ackley Improved and have a non-belted 7mm "magnum" to drive 7mm pills a bit faster than the 7mm-08 if necessary.)

I do not believe that twenty four thousandths (0.024") in diameter is going to make any appreciable hunting difference. Is there actually a shot that you would have missed with the 308 that the 7-08 would have made? There is an appreciable money difference if you're buying ammo for each. It would probably be easier to sell the 308. So many times, the specs or BC or some other "on paper" fact drives preference. However, it's a M7 vs a M700 - so that has to be considered also. Which one do you like better?

They are close enough to be considered ballistic twins with a slight edge going to 7-08, at least on paper. With the best loads the 7-08 has about 1" less drop at 400 yards and hits with around 35 ft lbs. more energy at 400. There is about 1 ft lb difference in recoil. There is absolutely no justification to own both. If you have a 308 that you like use it

I debated the same thing years ago when I wasn't into handloading. With that consideration I chose 308 and have no regrets. If someone handloads and just has to have the slight edge I have no argument them choosing 7-08 over 308.

Gonna make some people mad, but the correct answer is 6.5 CM. The 7-08 was designed to give better long range performance than 308 with less recoil by the guys shooting metallic silhouette games back in the day. They succeeded, but just barely. The 6.5 does what the 7-08 was intended to do and you'll find 6.5 ammo much more readily available and priced cheaper than 7-08.

308 brass can be necked down and used for 7mm08 reloads, so no worries there. And actually the 30 cal bullets will probably sell out faster than the 7mm bullets also, so no worries on that front either.

I honestly don't have a position on 7mm-08 vs .308 Winchester because I've never owned a rifle chambered for .308 Winchester.

However, I've owned rifles chambered for. 30-06 Springfield for a long time, and recently added centerfire rifles with lower felt recoil than .30-06 Springfield to my stable for a variety of reasons. The 7mm-08 was one of those chamberings, 7X64mm Brenneke was another that more closely parallels .308 Winchester in terms of recoil.

I agree it wouldn't make sense to me to remove the 7mm-08 rifle from my options in order to add a rifle chambered in .308 Winchester. But that's for me.
