How obsessed with Guns/shooting are you?

I would say that I am primarily obsessed with my wife, then trading stocks and then firearms. Firearms, hunting, fishing possessed me until I got married and then held a second position to my wife until I retired and discovered day trading - now firearms (and related) fall to third place. I just sold a fine Shiloh Sharps and ordered an even finer example that is scheduled to arrive in the Fall. I have an excitement about it’s arrival, but nothing like years ago. The only thing guaranteed in the Universe is that it will change; I fell in lockstep with that absolute and it turned out extremely well.

Like these posters and others, I don't consider myself obsessed with guns. I shoot every other week when I can and reload on the off weeks. And I do some shade tree gunsmiffin' from time to time. I'm on THR and other forums most days, but I have other interests as well. But I bet SWMBO probably considers my intrest in firearms an obsession, mostly because it's a rather spendy hobby.
More than I should be, but not to an unhealthy point... haven’t missed any payments on account of binge buying or anything of the sort.
I don't know. I've never really thought about guns/shooting as being an "obsession." Guns and shooting have always just been part of my life. I grew up around them, can't remember when they weren't around, and I'm 72 years old. For the most part, guns are just tools to me. Special tools to be sure, and some have a great deal of sentimental value to me, but in the end, they're just tools that I have and use (or might use) for specific purposes

I'd rather go shooting than any sports, amusement park, movie, guess you get the picture.

I like guns, but I wouldn't say I'm nuts about them.

Obsessed? No, but I love to own, shoot, clean, and accessorize tastefully. And reloading... because why not make your own ammo.

Have always been interested in guns since I was a kid. I started with toy guns, then Replica Models, then BB guns, then the real thing. Couldn't wait til I was 18 to buy my own shotguns and rifles, mainly for hunting), and to be 21 to buy handguns (probably my first "true love" in firearms)!

After that it was guns and more guns, reloading, and frequent trips to the range, keeping in mind that I did most of this while I was still single and had no one else to answer to! Getting married and having kids changed my gun world; or at least altered it a bit in terms of buying new guns and time spent with my hobby. It wasn't until my kid's were growing up that I had a chance to pass my gun knowledge and interests along to them that I actually got back into it. Now that I'm older and the kid's are gone (and missing our time together), I enjoy coming on here to THR to share my experiences and chat with fellow gun enthusiasts about our favorite subject and seeing and hearing about everyone else's experiences!

I never miss a Steel Challenge. Right now I'm probably at the club 3 times a week. It's far better now, since I have the time. But I always had the disposable income to buy what I wanted. Back in the early 90s, it probably seemed like an obsession to the wife, God rest her soul, but she eventually got to the point, when she saw I was edgy or antsy, she would say, "Why don't you go to the range, and relax?" I was prepping for IPSC then, and reloading all my own rounds, (which I need to get back to,) but accepted an apprenticeship in 1994, which garnered me a trade, but destroyed my IPSC dreams. Long hours plus school said I no longer had the time. Now, retired and in a shooting club, all the fun is back, and I've got plenty of time, money, and still a lot of passion for all things guns. Probably buy myself a Dillon 750 this year, as I find myself shooting a lot of rifle as well. I'm sated as far as firearms go, but will still purchase that one that strikes my fancy at any given moment.

Own a lot of guns(not nearly as many as some)..sons own a lot of guns(not nearly as many as some)...shoot them all, frequently..not a collector but a 'user' and 'carrier'...Not obsessed, but each gun has it's own 'purpose'..range guns, 'cowboy' guns, carry guns, rifles for plinking, HD gun..no safe queens, no guns there 'just cuz'..if I don't shoot it, or if it's no fun....it goes...

Back when my passion was upland bird hunting I was totally immersed in it and SXS shotguns, books for research and entertainment, trinkets and collectibles.

Now I’m into CC handguns I buy guns, ammo and holsters, I embrace this part of the gun culture with shooting and training as much as I can.

I used to be pretty obsessive about it but now that my collection has hit a point of housing what I consider to be some really nice shooting guns, I’ve lost a bit of my fervor.

But other things in life come along also, and those things require attention and money.

If anything, I enjoy the sport and hobby more now as I’m not worrying about the next gun I want to buy so much, I’m worrying about when I get to shoot next. I’m also thinking about when I’ll be able to get on the press and cook up another load.

I have all the guns that I want,(would like a couple more, just don't have the money) all the reloading stuff for them and I go to the range once a week. I don't get all wound up over it anymore. Lots of other things going on in life other than guns and shooting. I could make guns and shooting my sole obsession ( at one time I did) but as you grow older you realize there are some things that have been ignored too long.

I've been interested in guns since I was a kid watching John Wayne movies with my Dad. Had a double cap gun rig, badge and cowboy hat as a youngster. Moved to other toy guns into BB gun then went hunting with my Dad. A stint in the Navy had me qualified for both handguns and rifles and was seriously hooked at that point. Since then I've been a shooter and a collector. As I get older I still get to the range often, but find myself always on the hunt for the next best gun to add to the collection. I tend to look for things that are different now so my collection tends to be varied. The firearm bug led me to becoming an FFL and now I buy and sell things just for the fun of it. My only concern at this point is what will happen to my collection when I pass. Don't have anyone that is interested in firearms in the immediate family, so I may donate them to a local club or GOAL.

How obsessed with firearms and everything that goes with it are you?

for me its always watching a movie with shooting in it, or reading a book/magazine every day. a day doesn't go by where i don't think about firearms.

trying to collect what i can!

what about you?
I dont see it as an obsession.

Nor a fixation.

I have many other distractions,Excersize, movies, books, arts, food, lots of time with my wife !.

But the range,my firearms, gun magazines and movies about the PROPER use of the tools we all know and enjoy.

I can truly enjoy a great piece of music [ Beethovens 9th ] and still go to the range and let er rip.

I have a range of activities, but shooting is my only sport.
Any time hunting, fishing, golfing, tailgating, trailering, or avid teevee comes up, I just say I have one expensive hobby and that is enough.

I am going to put on my skeptical curmudgeon hat and ask why the OP asks this.

OP comes along recently, few posts, no profile, no information on himself. Not saying the OP is a troll post, or implying he has ill intent, but ... So he admits to playing video games. Not exactly an "obsession" about guns, perhaps one about video games. Movies? So what. Everyone watches movies.

Sorry, I'm suspicious. We've been down this road before when forums are infiltrated by new people asking seemingly innocuous questions, but ...

If one wanted to collect data about "gun nuts," "gun fanatics," "gun law extremists ...." One might come along and troll firearms forums in such an innocent fashion.

Let's look at some of the most common definitions of the word "obsession." There are actually some psychiatric associations with the word "obsessed" and "obsession."

noun

-a focus on one thing with little interest in anything else

- the fact or state of being obsessed with an idea, desire, emotion, etc.

-such a persistent idea, desire, emotion, etc., esp. one that cannot be gotten rid of by reasoning

-If you have an obsession, you're totally fixated on something and unhealthily devoted to it.

-someone or something that is so important to you that you are always thinking about them, in a way that seems extreme to other people

- persistent idea or impulse that continually forces its way into consciousness, often associated with anxiety and mental illness

- persistent disturbing preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling

- A pattern of unwanted or intrusive thoughts or urges that recur persistently, often accompanied by symptoms of anxiety.

- A compulsive, often unreasonable idea or emotion

I might have had an obsession about my wife (before we were married) but I'm over that now. I have zero obsessions. I have numerous very healthy hobbies and interests, however, firearms and shooting being only a couple, and they do not occupy all my time (or all of my thoughts) to an excessive degree. I also have a job in which firearms and shooting occupy much (sometimes most) of my work time, but it's just a job.

Y'all can answer however you want. I'm paid to be suspicious.

I suggest that everyone read Old Dog's post very carefully.

The verb "obsessed" refers to thought patterns and emotions that are abnormal and unhealthy.

One would not want someone else to ascribe such feelings to one, most particularly in the context of lethal weaponry. Admitting to such thought patterns could prove very troublesome in the future, when one will not have the opportunity to say "what I really meant was..." .

So far, I have not seen any responses that I would really worry about, but I see little reason for the question in the first place. It does not serve the objectives of THR well

I'm going to close this thread until the staff has had a chance to reflect upon it.

Only two things excite me any more , cars and guns.

I'm too old for women.
Cars are wretched contraptions (I spend 40 hours a week with them). Guns are awesome. Women are better than guns. You're never too old for women, sometimes they're too old for you (me) though ;).
