Check your mag baseplates! (If they’re plastic, anyway.)

So I grabbed my spare mag carrier this morning for my EDC (same S&W 3913LS that I’ve carried since 1995ish) and saw this sticking out of the pouch:

That’s not good! That happened since my last range trip just a couple of weeks ago. It’s a common failure mode of the plastic baseplates, at least on the single-stack 3rd-gen Smiths...the plastic gets fatigued and splits along the interior groove where it slides over the flange of the mag body.

I immediately went on Brownells and threw a few 3913LS baseplates in my cart, but I realize that could have happened just as easily to the one in the pistol.

If you carry mags with plastic baseplates, get a flashlight and check then for fatigue cracks every once in a while. It would suck to have that happen at a bad moment.

Gratuitous old-school pic (not my current carry load, though).

I have broken a few base pads both factory and aftermarket. They are a wear item for sure especially if you are frequently dropping you magazines.

I add metal base plates to most of my mags.

Watch out for sheet metal baseplates like Kahr as well. Those can be leveraged off pretty easy by the corner of a shelf at a grocery store, flinging your ammo all down the isle. You can crimp the metal folds tighter.

What I find funny is I have had exactly ONE baseplate fail..........a welded steel Colt 1911 mag. :). Colt did replace no muss no fuss to their credit. This was about 10-12 years or so ago.

Point is as was said, they are consumables. I am a mag whore for a reason. ;)

Not a problem with a properly built plastic baseplate. You almost can't get them off a Glock mag!! :)

Get yourself something like this: LIRISY Glock Tool Kit, Front Sight Tool Magazine Disassembly Tool Mag Plate Removal Tool Pin Punch Tool for Glock 19 26 27 43 Accessories https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DNCBHS5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_uk42Eb6B8ENHT

It really helps. Use them with authority. Push the button in with the little plunger nub and quickly push down in the handle. Search “Glock magazine disassembly tool”. There are lots of different ones with different prices.
