Ordered it via Gunbroker on 14th of May and was finally able to pick it up today.

It was worth the wait. Absolutely floored by the fit and finish. Slide to frame fit is superb and the slide racks like it's on ball bearings. Exceeded my expectations for a 1911 at this price point.

It's a Remington 1911 R1 Limited in .40 S&W.

Remington doesn't offer them anymore and instead has the "Enhanced" model. A gun shop had a bunch of them in stock and the MSRP was $1200. Found a few for around $900 on Bud's Guns and other places. This shop was getting rid of them for $549. Plus there is a current rebate for $50, so $499 for a loaded up 1911 that appears to be as nice as those costing twice as much.

There is no rattle like I recall with the old GI models and virtually no play in the slide to frame fit. Trigger is a little heavier, but no creep and breaks like glass. Probably around 5 lbs, but will have to get it home to test it.

Haven't shot it yet, since I literally picked it up on my lunch break, but will do a proper range report on my next day off, which is Sunday.

My little gun shop also had plenty of other goodies in stock and I picked up a can of Varget, another 20-round AR-10 mag, and a box of .40 S&W Speer Lawman ammo for $12.

Gun feels OK, but the G-10 grips are too aggressive and will be switched out. Grip checkering is very well done and almost too aggressive.

Can't believe how huge this thing is compared to my P365. People actually conceal these things?? LOL.

OP, you did good.

Slide to frame fit is not as important for accuracy as is the barrel to slide fit. I had no problems shooting the old battle rattles accurately that I was issued as long as the barrel to slide fit was good.

I need to find one like that for that price and get my first 1911 as well. I keep putting it off

A good belt and a good holster makes all the difference in the world. A good holster doesn't do well without a good belt to hold it up. I used to use the heaviest belts that I could find at Walmart for years. No matter what they would sag after a while. A couple of years ago I wisened up and bought a a Desantis gun belt and man that made a big difference. With a good gun belt, I can carry my 1911's comfortably all day without the belt sagging or pants being weighed down like with a regular belt.

I'm pretty thin at 5' 9" and 145 pounds and have no problems concealing a 1911. Yes my compact 3.5" 1911 is easier to conceal than a full size is. I still carry both full size 1911's often.

It amazes people, but is not hugely difficult (keeping your trousers o, can be an issue [:)]).

Any suggestions on lightening the trigger? Checked it and it is 5.5 lbs. Bit heavy for a target gun.

There's a three-fingered spring under the hammer strut which does a number of useful things to the insides and outsides of a 1911. It's easy to bend too much. So, it's probably better to hire a competent gunsmith (one with chops and happy previous 1911 customers) to do the task.

Now, given the amount of fore-and-aft grip texture you have, you might consider getting some slick-sided grips. There used to be a guy who was turning out black Lucite ones that would be just the trick on that pistol.

Congrats on the 1911...a definite "must have" for an American. They do conceal quite well. I carry my CQB around all the time in this TTGunleather holster. Tim Thurner does outstanding work. The other holster is by IHL, but they folded last year.

That is a nice looking piece at a fantastic price. 1911s are fun to shoot. Can't say I have shot one in 40. A really classic design too.

I prefer the rubber grips to wood. A lot more comfortable to shoot for me.
