.22 cal HP ammo shortage?

Spot on, IMO.
I do feel a bit bad for newcomers to shooting. Ran into a new guy just the other day; he's had his 9mm for probably a year and has perhaps 200 rounds through it. He was shocked to here ammo was getting difficult to find on local shelves.
When he asked, "Won't Walmart have it?" I felt a little sad giving him the "news."
I told him might want to go by the Rural King, Academy, etc with some frequency even if only picking up a box or two of range 9s. Also filled him in on Target Sports USA, ammoseek, etc.
Poor kid ... he just wasn't aware. Had I some range 9s with me, I'd have given him a box or sold him a couple at cost, but it was rimfire outing for me.

When the 1968 Gun Control Act limited ammo sales to fac-to-face at FFLs and sales were entered into a ledger requiring DL and the anti-gunners were talking about taxing ammo off the market, I started caching a five year supply of ammo for each of my guns. At least a five year supply for frequent target practice (more than enough than absolutely needed for self defense, pest control or hunting).
I have ridden out most of the ammo panics with a comfortable reserve to rest on. Our enemies want to tax SD and sports shooting to death. Take precaution and make a policy of keeping a reserve and stocking it well when prices are reasonable.

I'd verify the ammo you have doesn't work before buying into this mini-panic. I restocked all .22lr when prices dropped below $0.04 per round in bulk. I agree if you find a good price you should buy when you can as its hard to tell what what will happen in the run-up to the election and post election.

Yup, if you didn't stock up on ammo between October and March, the ship has sailed I'm afraid.
As one of the new shooters that joined at the worst time I have been stock piling it every paycheck. Probably too much in fact, I could have bought several firearms with what I've spent on ammo since March. I'm somewhere around 2k rds of .40 and 9mm, 600rds of 38 spl, 600 rds of 7.62x25 and probably now approaching 8-10k rds of .22lr.
I have 2 LGS I frequent. One always has bulk packs of Federal HP .22LR in 38gr and 40gr. I will buy a couple of boxes every time I stop in to pay on layaway. Usually grab some small packs of CCI .22 as well. My other closer to my job always seems to put out random 100 rd racks of CCI Minimags and I'll buy every time. I was buying the 300rd bricks of the Troy Landry edition Minimags every chance but that seems to have dried up now even online

That's a good start. I unloaded my truck yesterday. 4K of 45 ACP, 8k of 9mm, 1k of 7.62x39, 2k of 5.56, almost 1k of 300 Blackout and around 7-800 of 22 LR. I wonder if my mileage will go up?
When I go to the range I just open up ammo cans and start shooting. I still need to load myself up at least another thousand 9mm, though I'm thinking about loading a can each of the three bullets I use.
I'm sitting on around 40-45K of 22 LR and hardly shoot it anymore. It's cheaper for me to cast 9mm bullets and load them up than to use my MiniMags.

You should buy in bulk, it’s cheaper in the long run.

I might suggest that, even if you don’t currently reload, you might consider getting components (bullets/primers/powder) and stashing them back.
For less than $200 you can get a lot of components, particularly in more esoteric calibers like .45 Colt, 10mm, etc. Maybe 9mm not so much. But, at least you’d have them

Figured my two 50 CAL ammo cans full of loose .22 ammo was plenty. Then gunny ups the anti. Still think i'll be OK though as I only used half a can during the "O" years........still a Rem bucket full would be a nice addition.

I have probably north of 30K rounds here and there. Doubt I will be running out anytime soon.
I just bought a brick from Dunham's Saturday.
I haven't seen a shortage in 22. But they did put a limit on as soon as people went full retard.
I've been keeping my purchases to a minimum to allow someone else to catch up. I'm at least 10 years ahead on everything except primers.

12,000 rounds of CCI Velocitor hollowpoints here. I like CCI Stinger hollowpoints, but went for the Velocitors due to the heavier bullet.

Don't mean to be an "A" here. But, If I'm going to buy a 22 it's going to have to shoot anything on the shelf. If it won't Why would I want it?

Why do you think I said this;
Don't ever get a .22 auto pistol if that's your philosophy. You'll be very disappointed. Semi auto rifles are better, and bolt action rifles and revolvers will function, but each one will have it's 'favorite' fodder.
Most rifles will go bang most times when you pull the trigger with .22 ammo, except for ammo failures due to bad priming in bulk ammo. Depends how accurate you want to be. Then the ammo chase begins since NO rifle CF or RF shoots all ammo well.
Pistols can be more choosy mainly SV or HV.

I know this thread is cold, but I’m confessing to something I’m just a little ashamed of. Well two things.
One: I ran an shopping errand for my wife at Walmart- and I intended to stay out of WM after they quit stocking handgun ammo.
Two: they had 325 round bulk boxes of .22lr, & I cleaned the shelf of the 4 boxes they had. Cost was under $0.06 per round, and I didn’t leave any for the next guy. Sorry, but I couldn’t help myself!
I don’t feel much better but at least I’ve confessed to you other “addicts”.

I would have done the same. And, I would not be ashamed. In the last 22 ammo shortage I had to go without because people would empty the shelves week after week before I could get any. I had to pay outrageous internet prices plus shipping. Now , If its on the shelf I'll buy what I want.
