Is the Vepr side rail different from other AKs now or something? I use the RS Regulate one on my Vepr...

Vepr side mount is a bit different. The only other AK that has a proprietary one that I am aware of are the Yugos/Zastavas. I think some of the Century’s years ago had misaligned side rails, but that’s another topic.

Someone above mentioned the RS Regulate mounts, I highly second that recommendation, they are superior to every other mount imo. They can be adjusted to center any optic on your AK and are rock solid. There is an RS made for Veprs:

I use one with an MRO on my SLR104, I never leave it attached when my rifle is in storage and it has always held zero. Speaking of this, I will eventually need to get around to buying a couple more RS mounts (one for my Vepr and one for my WASR2). My Saiga uses an Ultimak.

I know that a Kobra and other mounts will work wellon VEPRs as well as other AKs. Only thing I have seen is that a given mount will be perfectly centered over one AK type and will be slightly offset when put on another AK type like a Saiga.
