.41 Mag Association

Picked up some .41 240grn cast FP gas check bullets from Montana... for the Marlin 1894 and maybe the Dan Wesson. Anyone here work with those bullets before? I think I'll try IMR4227 and 2400 first... I love those Cast Performance 250grn FP bullets, but the Montanas were a bit cheaper, and I already order other bullets from them, anyway.

Those Berry's without a crimp groove can be roll crimped on the start of the ogive. I use 7.0 gr of 700X with F150 primers @ 1.515 inches. Very accurate and consistent with the deep seating.

Dude...if that die set didn't come with the Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die would recommend you buy one especially if you are going to use plated bullets that don't have a crimping groove... The Berry's plated bullet is my favorite plinking/taget shooting bullet and the Lee CFCD does a great job. 8.0 grains of Unique is extremely accurate...

I use the standard lee seating die for my .45LC as well as .38SPL, and I never had any issues with the crimp on ungrooved bullets (like Berry's). Is there a reason why I should invest in the factory crimp die. Personally I don't see any difference between these dies.

I just have always crimped in a separate operation and have found the CFCD not only gives and excellent crimp but also helps increase bullet pull...

If you use a standard roll crimp on plated bullets, it's possible to pierce the plating if you get too heavy. Proper neck tension is paramount with plated bullets... that's where I believe the FCD comes in. I personally don't use one, but there was a discussion here about it, and that's what I understand about it, now.

I use those plated bullets for 41 Special and don't use a separate crimp for either those or my 41 Magnum loads with XTPs or gas checks. I guess I would offer that you have what you need to get started. I do find FCDs useful if any rounds exhibit run out and won't gauge.

Hey there fellow 41 fans,
This is my 41 mag Blackhawk, it turned 41 this year. It was given to me by my father who used it for pig hunting while stationed on Guam back in he 80s. She likes the lee 240gn swc over 18-19.5gn of H110 and long walks in the woods.Wolffe spring kit is on the way. Planning to use it for blackbear this year. To anyone that hunts bear would you recommend using a jacketed hollow point round or a heavy cast bullet. I’d sure like to avoid tracking a not quite dead bear into the tangled jungle that we call a the woods here in in Western Washington. A5CBAE49-88FA-4CC6-853D-27B7CD57686F.jpeg

Barbaroja,
Hunted lots of critters with 41 Mag, like a LBT design bullet better. The CPC 250 gr gas check over approx 17 gr of W296 yields a nice consistent and effective load in my RBH. Can burn more W296 Behind this bullet, not sure more powder is really needed. There is a 240 gr Montana Bullet that is also very good.

Thanks for the head up I didn’t realize that Lehigh made anything for the 41 but am more interested in what Bullet design would be preferable for bear be it a wfn swc or a jhp. But it looks like your vote would be a cast lead bullet with a large meplat.

Personally, the Cast Performance WFN 250grn bullet would be my choice, over a good charge of H110. Looking at my notes I don't seem to have any chrono data for that combo... I'll have to fix that.

I'm working up loads for the Montana 240grn bullet... that's my task for this week.

I've also got a stash of 210grn Remington JSP's that I'm fond of, one of those on top of 20.8grn H110 gives me 1300fps out of my 6" Dan Wesson.... and almost 1800fps out of my Marlin.

I’ve got some of those Remington 210 jacketed soft point as well as some of the Remington hollowpoints.
Perhaps I’ll look into getting a new mold.

I’ve had my eye on the 41 hammer mold from MP. Has options for 3 different hollowpoints as well as a flat point gas check or plain base. Supposed to be very well made. Little lighter than i was wanting as the solid configuration is spec’ed at 228gn but my alloy tends to drop bullets about 5gn heavier than listed so I’d be looking at around a 235 grainier. I think that should do the job over a stout load if H110.

Absolutely YES!!!!!

This man is from your neck of the woods...and although this is about .44s, it would apply to .41s...

Wow, that was a great post he made. Thank you for showing me that. While I would love to use my cast bullets it looks like it may be a better idea to use a hollow point. As I’ve mentioned, the forests of western Washington are very thick, often hard to see 30 yards in any direction and tracking a wounded bear in that stuff would already have the hair standing on the back of my neck being out there alone, so anchoring the animal is a a priority for me.

They have been on sale for that price for months and months now, I’m just a fool And kept putting off an order hoping they would get some 7mm accubonds in before placed the order and now I’ve missed my chance. Let us know how they work out as their are very few semi jacketed hollowpoints available for the .41

Just today, got some .41 CAL 215 Grain SWC - Coated from ACME Bullets
I'm thinkin' about trying some mouse fart loads for these.
I have plenty made with 2400.

Maybe some Trail Boss.
At only 4.5 - 6.5 gr
That ought be a nice mild load.

Not sure where to post this.........
Need space, downsizing to smaller digs.
Pondering the reduction of my herd to two favorites and most often used;
Smith & Wesson model 10 (38 SPL) and FA 83 (41 Mag).
Asking a well gunned group, what your two choices would be ?
Thanks in advance for your comments !

Hi...
Big fan of the .41Magum revolvers.
I have three that are shot just about every week. One S&W 57 and two BlackHawks.
8.5gr of Unique under a 215gr commercial cast coated LSWC is my general purpose load. I also shoot a lot of Hornady 210gr XTPs over a near book maximum charge of 2400.
All three of my .41s shoot these loads very well.

I do like my .41 mags. Gotta handload, that's all.. I have a model 57 6 inch that loves 6.8 grains of Red Dot and the MP200 grain HP. Not a hunting load to be sure, but it is super accurate !! Not bad in the recoil department either..Mike

Depending on the circumstances, a .38 Super for sure and a .41 Magnum...

As to exactly what models in each caliber, would just have to see what I was doing at the time.

A Commander in .38 Super with extra barrels in 9mm and 9x23 Winchester would be carried daily, shot in IDPA and combat shoots.

The .41 would have to cover handgun hunting, woods walking and long range target plinking... Favorite would be a 4" S&W 57/657 but would sure miss my SAs....
