I recently got the idea of getting a 22 mag bolt action rifle. (I was given about 1,500 rounds of 22 mag a while back.) This would be strictly a range toy to let me see what kind of accuracy I can get out of the cartridge. Just fun at the range shooting.

I have a chance to bid on a Marlin 782, magazine fed, at an upcoming auction but I am completely unfamiliar with the model. Assuming it is in good condition, is anyone familiar with the 782?

I suspect the auction will keep the cost under 300 bucks. I know Savage and Marlin offer new bolt actions in 22 mag for under 300 dollars. Just wondering if the 782 is exceptional and worth bidding on.

Thanks for any help.

Depending on how old it is, my feeling has been I prefer older manufactured guns. I find the fit and finish to be better, often nicer wood, and the bugs have generally been worked out of them.

And you don't have to worry about that first scratch. lol

Speedo66,
Thanks for the reply. I tend to agree with you about some older manufacturing. I'll examine the 782 carefully on the day of the auction. I'm hoping the interest won't be too high (and drive up the bidding) since it's a bolt action in today's semi-auto mind set. Of course, there will be plenty of white beards, like myself, who prefer bolt actions. :D
