Is it worth the risk on waiting to buy ammo? Anybody see these prices going down soon?

I've been seeing 9mm FMJ up by about 3 cents per round. It's certainly an uptick, but I don't think it qualifies as "insane."

If I still didn't have enough set back, I'd be buying selectively when deals pop up. I do not expect a price decrease until we at least get past the election, and probably not even then.

Are you basing this on what you want to happen? The summer could easily turn into one of riots on a regular basis if the politicians cannot get a handle on things.

I've got what I need, so what I want to have happen doesn't really enter into it.

It could. One of the many reasons that I said I wouldn't expect a reduction in prices until the election at the earliest, and probably not even then.

Back in the last big shortage (2000something-ish) there was very little 5.56, .38spl or 9mm to be found in ATL. While on a road trip in FL, I stopped at a gun store/range in SE TAMPA and was floored to see pallets of this ammo on display. The clerk says, it was puzzling to him why ATL had none and they had so much. I had asked for a couple of boxes when I went in but left with a couple of cases.

Why do you even ask this question? I mean the time to buy was before this crap happened. You had 3 .75 years to buy ammo when 9mm was 100-120 per 1k 223 by 1k was around 250 for win white box. Its not going down ever, people are going to buy no matter what. Buying now will be better than latter.

Moral of story is if you waited until this moment you waited to long.

Wow, I must have missed that 1,000 rounds of 9mm for $100. A dime a round? For factory, brass-cased ammo?

Same. I consider myself a stickler for a deal, and a very patient buyer for guns and ammo. The best I've done in the last ten years was probably .14/round for 9mm. Best since 2016 was around .15 or .16 /round. Brass cased, new, FMJ.

I'm still seeing 9mm FMJ for <.19 round a couple times each week, but one has to be quicker on the trigger before it goes OOS.

@kydan would you be comfortable sharing your dime/round source? If you're game I'd love to add it to the list of sites where I shop.

Maybe my LGS always had high prices but so far the prices aren’t that much higher than normal, like literally maybe $1 a box more, at least for standard ammo. So no, I’m not waiting.

Ammo is like food. If you need it buy it. If you can afford to buy a reserve, then do so in case of emergency.

As for predicting the market, my answer would be that I have no idea.

I just ordered a 800rd spam can of WMC 9mm for $199. Not a good deal by any stretch but if it gets worse I dont want to pay the price, literally, I need to be able to shoot my handguns pretty regularly and I'm going to be teaching my pastor how to shoot soon so I need some plinking ammo on hand for that, he has never shot a gun and says he wants to buy one for protection before elections so I'm gonna tutor him a lil and help him with his purchase.

It stings a lil bit to see TargetSports inventory as of late, at one point pre Corona they had the 50rd boxes of Gold Dots and HST's on sale for $19.99 for a limited time only. I dont know what possessed me not to buy a case, I dont think you or I will ever see Premium JHP go that low ever again, history. Oh well, I have a few hundred rounds of premium JHP for my carry guns, what I'm lacking is fmj plinking ammo, I had a few thousand but shot it all up and now the prices are prohibitively expensive in most cases. Paying $200 for 800rds of steel case 9mm might sting a lil, I just hope it doesnt go up and that it stays available. If it does continue to rise in price I'm going to have to shoot very lil. Even when prices are good I download my mags to 10rds to conserve. Might have to download to 7 if things stay on this course.

For me and my area, it's not the price, it's the unavailability. 9mm is unavailable (through normal retail outlets) at any price.

Buying more ammo or components as a hedge against inflation is sometimes a better investment than money in the bank.

Ordinarily, I would jump to counter this advice, but given the current volatility throughout every segment of the economy, which is, primarily, a result of the pandemic, I would agree. Unless you are forgoing paying rent or buying food for your family, I can't see a down side to buying loaded ammo or components right now.

Although, I might suggest that, with stocks and 401/IRA funds as they are right now, investing more into your retirement fund, whatever it is, might not be a bad idea. You'll be getting more shares for the dollar than you would have a year ago, and, eventually (may take years to do it) it will all bounce back. This is especially true if you're near retirement and took a hit this year.

Totally agree with the investing in stock right now. Some of us are adapting new ways to continue to train and conserve ammo supplies at the same time.

I watched the Speer Lawman I buy go from .018 to .028 per round; for a case price, that added $100......I consider that a serious uptick.

+1 on that. 3 cents is not negligible when considering case price. That's an extra $30. Going from 0.18 to .28 is substantial.

Lol, 3cents?

Yes it was at our local Walmart and rural king from 2016-2017ish. The 9MM was federal brass cases bulk box.

I remember UMC 9mm fmj hundred packs for $10, and Black Hills reman 223 fmj at less than $10 for 50 at our local sporting goods store, but that was likely 8-10 years ago. Life was good!

I count somewhere around 375 rounds total. If your buying a few 50rd boxes here and there 0.03 cents might seem trivial. When your buying case quantities with some degree of regularity it adds up, quick. Even still, 0.03 cents I can contend with, when ammo goes up from 0.13 cents to 0.25cents, that's considerable. Not so trigger happy

I got a case of Speer Gold Dot from there, at the end of May, for $399. 124 gr LE JHP. Didn't go with the +P since I'm going out of fullsized pistols (CZ 75, Beretta 92FS, Sig P226, S&W 5906 etc). I've read with shorter barrels, you want +P, but the longer ones are fine with regular. Plus, I'm not certain I saw the +P's still there. :)

I think they do it end of the month, so watch them.

Otherwise for 9, ... I used to prefer S&B at 18 cents a rd, that ain't happening now. But 20 cents for brass is completely possible; watch Bass Pro like a hawk. They occasionally push out the Herter's at 18 cents, tax pushes it up to just under 20. Free shipping for greater than $50 orders. Herters used to be S&B, used to be PPU, I've heard it's Winchester now. Don't care, it's affordable. Bass Pro tends to get beat up for delayed shipments, but I had 2 orders (one from Cabela's, one from BP). Cabela's came in a week, BP came in just over 3 wks. Again, I don't care, they have/will ship, and you're locking in a decent price. Best price for brass FMJ online that I can find. Don't muck around, create an account so you have a 1-click to fill out the form (you'd be surprised how this has been useful, I think I've gotten the last order both times). Be ready to change your "home store", because you will need to order from a store with it in stock. Doesn't matter if it's the one down the street, or 3 states over- you're getting it shipped. When the deal comes, find a store with it in stock, get it in your cart, make sure you have checked the "ship to home" option, and submit fast. I go 1k, so basic math helps ;), the first time it was 10 100 rd boxes, this time it's 2 500 rd boxes.

That was just a couple of orders. I posted. I had close to 40 orders alone last year. You can do the math on $6.44 a box, which is the same cost for bulk. American Eagle for 8.76 for unlimited qualities and free shipping. I think it is now around almost $13.00 a box and not even available.

That's good advice. Thanks. I actually got irritated with bass pro because twice I found ammo, purchased it, got order confirmation and the next day received a cancellation notice. The first time I waited on hold for 40 mins to be told their warehouse couldnt keep up with computers or some such thing, understandably so, both during Corona panic, irritating nonetheless.

I'll try what you said with one click and all.... I like target sports because if I order in the morning the ammo is on my porch the very next day. I rarely if ever need ammo in such prompt fashion but I still like it.
